Steve was the best DJ of all time, there is no-one who came close to him... What a complete legend to have made such huge contribution to so many millions of people for decades. For those of us who heard him from his first show on Radio 1, he just blew us away and it just got better and better. RIP Steve
I agree 100%. I listened to Steve from his early 1980's Radio 1 show till he left Radio 1. Put simply he was unique. He was funny but friendly and kind. Everett was Zany but didn't have the same connection with a radio audience which Steve did. God bless you Steve ❤
I used to work in a small flooring warehouse from 85 to 90 and we had a radio that played Radio1 all day long. Simon Bates Our Tune & Steve Wright in the afternoon was our working soundtrack every day. RIP and thanks for the memories.
I think every work place stopped work to listen to Simon Bates our tune and the sad story he portrayed on the radio. Steve Wright was definitely a one in a billion person
You are my broadcasting hero. You weren’t just a DJ you were a entertainer and a legend Steve Wright. Rest in peace Rise in Glory. I still haven’t got over the BBC chopping your show on Radio 1. I’ll never get over the news that you have died. Goodbye dear Friend. Xx ❤😂😢
I always tuned in to Steve Wright when driving around the country as a salesman. He was truly original and broke up the boredom of traffic jams and long drives. RIP, mate!
RIP Steve - this broadcast was exactly the same time that I started becoming an avid listener as I started my first job after leaving school. You made afternoons in the warehouse so much more bearable. A sad loss for the nation.
I remember my school work experience in the summer of 1990 and couldn't wait to listen to Steve Wright in the Afternoon. The weather was amazing and so was Steve and his posse
I remember being in hospital and Steve Wright in the Afternoon show was the highlight of the day, his shows were always witty, funny, and interesting, his music choices, as always sublime and the velvety tone to his voice give a sort of soothing continuity of reassurance. RIP Steve and thank you for everything x
Steve, you touched the lives of so many people with your dulcet tones, quirky sense of humour and never ending quality music. You accompanied tens of thousands on many road trips and traffic jams, you made the day bearable. You will be forever missed my airwave friend.
Ive grown up with this genius DJ - still not comprehending hes GONE.😭💔 We had Kenny Everett in the 70's then we got Steve! A nicer more talented man you could not find on radio. I used to like 'Phil the fish filleter' 🤣😂😅 , the old woman and 'Ask Elvis' RIP Steve I expect you Terry and Jimmy Young will be entertaining them in Paradise! I'm 64 now and remembering these happy days fondly.

The days of" being so angry we could throw the phone down" have gone...😢..so sad. First the phones (robust enough to throw down!) and now Steve. R.I.P. My best wishes to his family at this sad time. 😔 💔
So sorry to hear of the passing of Steve. Such a huge audience on R2 in the afternoon, then the BBC cruelly did the dirty on him. There are plenty of recordings of Steve so we will never be without him.
Capital was great too. Dave Cash, Michael Apsel, Nikky Horne, Kenny Everett, Chris Tarrant. Tarrant was fantastic with Cara on the breakfast show.He was wasted on TV. Capital was great now a chav urban station for the tic toc generation. Any one else remember Adrian Just with his excellent comedey clips show?Saturday lunchtime on Radio One.And Alan Freeman Rock Show.Magic days.
There will never be another Steve Wright on the radio . He was definitely a one in a billion person. He will be missed greatly by many listeners of his shows.
I was a sales rep in the 80's charging around in my Vauxhall cavalier... Awful job but Steve's marvellous characters were hilarious and kept me sane - thank you Steve
At 4.0 minutes....Mr Angry 'someone says you're in stereo today; you're supposed to be in London, I suppose thats coming out of my licence fee...' absolute class....RIP Steve.
A genius and if radio was an art form he would be up there with the best if not the greatest of the airwaves. His shows always cheered people up and despite their off the cuff appearance were intricately planned and prepared by Steve. Thanks for the memories and RIP.
I was an Easter leaver from Halifax Catholic High school, this Easter 1985 and my first day at work was Tuesday 9th April for a small textiles company, Radio 1 was on all day Monday to Friday and the first time I ever heard Steve was the day after this broadcast the rest is quite literally history , RIP Steve . ❤
Ah Steve Wright in the Afternoon. I was only a casual listener in the mid 80's. But by the end of the 80's and Early 90's it was very much must listen to. 0898, Arnie, Lama Man, Taxi driver, so many others and one offs and such happy memories.
BBC had the talent for a BBC gold station. Wright, Bruce ,Edmunds, Blackburn etc . Would be so listened to....or just a station with old programes from the past put together. So much better than we have now.
When I was younger I used to cut the DJ out and record the music. Now I’m older and know I can get the music from anywhere I wished I’d recorded bits in between the music.
Mr Angry!!! Yes we used to tape Steve and listened to it back " Yes recorded it on tape " This man was a master at his trade and it seems the earlier DJs are much better than today "Tony Blackburn ect Rip
1985: 3 million unemployed, Miners strike ends, IRA bombings, football riots, Live Aid yet to happen, mobile phone just been launched in UK. Cheer up with Steve Wright in the afternoon.
Great memories steve..genius made it sound so easy...the work involved...Mr angry and sid 😂..cracked me up...what have we got now?...oh yeah..nothing!..r.i.p..steve..gazz
Radio 1 should have been on FM from the get-go - they played all the latest hits (plus the odd oldies), yet those idiots at the BBC kept it on medium wave for about twenty years, with only the occasional appearance on FM - weeknights at ten, Saturday between 1 and 7:30 pm, Sundays from 5 pm and on Bank Holiday Mondays on the frequency normally occupied by Radio 2!
That northern irish lady who laughs at her own not very amusing comments is extremely annoying. like why are you laughing? you didn't say anything funny! And she does it every time!
