Steve Wright was one of the greats up there with Kenny Everett.
@retrorobbins

Kenny Everett was a different type of brilliance , so much imagination and enthusiasm it was always going to be infectious, you can bet your bottom dollar that he had an influence on lots of DJ's as well as Steve Wright and Chris Evans in some way , there is a DJ on sunshine radio who has the sort of quality in a new type way one that likes jingles and snippets of TV programmes that make me full of energy , Nick Jones in the morning on sunshine radio is breaking new ground ... but still DJ's like that are few and far between real life entertainers , I'm sick of the growing trend of actors or converted TV presenters doing radio as an extra bit of income, keeping real DJs from the limelight and being able to shine, rarely are they any good🤨, let me give you an example of what I mean, if you had an electrician who also does carpentry and carpet fitting has Willis a car mechanic he may do every one of those jobs to a reasonably good standard , but he will never do those jobs to the highest standard, jack of all trades but master of none , but if you had somebody who solely concentrates I'm learning one profession then eventually he will perfect that profession , and DJs are those type of people... rowing Atkinson as good as a comedian he is, wooden be as funny on radio if he had to tell the occasional jokes as well as travel news ? But puts him on a camera and record lots of sketches and he can be hilarious , the only person I remember in not so long ago, who was good on radio and great on television, Noel Edmonds an all-round family entertainer.. last time I spoke to know he mentioned he did like Allan here , so he does keep up with modern events

Listened to Wrighty for Many, Many years on radio 2, ken Bruce too, id miss out Jeremy vine but without fail I'd listen to Wrighty, I adored the guy. I shed a tear when his afternoon show finished and have been listening to smooth radio ever since. BBC are soooo stupid and so woke and I'll never go back to them. I really believe it broke Wrighty's heart and his passing has broken ours 💔

We listened to Steve regularly here in America and loved him. He referred to Ms. Thomas as his friend even as she was giving him the sack. He was a class act. She, on the other hand, should be ashamed of herself. We are saddened by Steve's passing and angry at the BBC for their sheer stupidity and arrogance.

why? did the BBC kill him? no, they didn't and he was still employed by the BBC up until he died and was going to be involved with BBC radio in a different capacity. Things change and move forward try and do the same.

Can't believe what they've done to radio 2. It was a great radio station, but they got rid of all the talent and wanted a younger audience, I thought radio 1 was for the younger audience. Radio 2 is finished. Can't believe the management couldn't see how good it was. The BBC is on a slippery slope.

Here is the lunacy of the BBC.. On BBC Essex on a Sunday we had absolute must listen Radio all day.. John Leech Soul Show.. Ray Clark old skool Radio Caroline type stuff.. Mark Punters brilliant Vintage Vinyl and David Clayton. The music was incredible.. 80s Jazz Funk Northern Soul 60s pop Indie Beach Boys The Who 2 Tone etc . Good banter.. They scrapped the whole lot ..It is now geared to ethnic listeners. Thats not the problem ..it's just that the subject matter it is now only relevent to maybe 3 per cent of Essex listeners whereas before it was for everyone. They are almost forcing you to go elsewhere.. I'm now on Greatest Hits. It's pretty good pretty much most of the time.. I only return for Liza Tarbuck on a Saturday

I was genuinely shocked when I heard that Steve Wright had passed away, two days ago. I even remember him on Radio 210!. So very sad. As for Radio 2 itself, particularly Helen Thomas. I’ll leave it there. Bring back Big L - Radio London. In my opinion from 1967 to 1969, Radio 1 was effectively Radio London without the commercials. I’ve watched two of your videos Adrian and I have really enjoyed them. Thank you.

Get rid of Mr Vine then that will be a start. It's disgusting that after 40 years of Steve giving us all the laughs & great programmes this is the yanks he got. I haven't listened to Radio 2 for over a decade now and it used to be my 'go to' station. Not anymore! Once Zoe Ball and Sarah Cox became mainstream on the station, that was it, I even deleted the presets for Radio 2 from my car radio, I didn't even want to accidentally come across the station. Like many others, I too am sick to the back teeth of them bowing to the WOKE brigade and the diversity box ticking.

Millions of us left when they axed Steve. Disgraceful his show was at the height of its popularity and he was adored. He saw us through Covid and the darkest times. Then they dumped him. They didn’t listen to the angry feedback. Now they’re gushing over him. I hope they’re finished.

Totally agree with what you got to say although I did like Jeremy Vine in the middle was a break from all those quality real DJs put Jeremy Vine was more of a presenter than a dish jockey in that type of setting , out of all the tributes that I've been seen, the one that I haven't seen and the one that I was eager to see, is the man that seemed to jump ship at the right time who's energy and show must have been influenced by Steve Wright , Chris Evans is a fantastic presenter with a real naughty past but he is a real person and one of the last DJs with boneless amount of energy that transfers itself through the airwaves, what are your thoughts on Chris? , I wonder if he saw what was coming a new when to leave , however my only problem is with Chris Evans!! is I also like to listen to music because he does waffle on too much at times 😂 I used to listen to your Show on and off when I was in the right area to get the signal , great video thank you for the tribute and keep up the good work .as a former disc jockey myself , who do you think in this country is smashing it as a disc jockey now? There's one in the morning I particularly like Nick Jones that's worth a listen on sunshine radio ,

Cant stand commercial radio or tv all them adverts but that,s just me, I no thats how they get there money but there greedy 3 tracks of music if your lucky and 4 minutes or more of adverts, i,ll never listen to any , used to be able to swap channels when adverts came on but there clever now usually the add breaks are at the same time across the board. No this is an add free zone my end. But I do agree that radio 2 made some big mistakes.

Adrian, you should start your own 'pirate' radio show - even on youtube, I'd certainly listen in! It was so much fun when we had proper pirate radio stations, the BBC and the Govt hated them! Didn't the Govt threaten to storm Caroline back in the 70s and send in the marines? 🤣😂

In your earlier video, you mention the Greatest Hits Radio, from Lincolnshire. This is another clone of Radio Two. There's a DJ on there called John Marshall. He has to be one of the most annoying people on the planet, and they repeat so many records, it's like listening to Capital Radio or Invicta.

It is disgusting how thay have treated steve wright and all the other DJ Legends of radio 1 and now radio 2 are doing the same thing as radio 1 did back in 1995 i remember listerning to the top 40 with Bruno brooks on a sunday afternoon back in the day up untill his final top 40 show sunday 16th April 1995 after that the show lost it sparkle and he had an audience of 7 milliom listeners and Bruno brooks had been doing the top 40 as a regular presenter since sunday 30th March 1986 suceeding Richard skinner, bruno brooks was sacked by that ponce Mathew bannister who was the controller of radio 1 back in 1995 he said bruno brooks was to old for the station same as steve wright DLT simon bates Gary Davies and meny more that had given there life and soal to the station, Bruno brooks and steve wright were the last of the gang to leave thay both presented there last shows on friday 21st April 1995 and that was the last of matthew bannister dinosaurs to axed from radio 1 what a bastard, now radio 2 is doing the same thing as matthew bannister did to radio 1 29 years ago back in 1995 absolutely disgusting

Ada, The BBC Radio lot. Back in the mis 2000's I and a colleague went to the BBC Radio 1 management of the time and highlighted very clearly that a certain dance DJ was cheating the public and industry with some total un-impartial activity on their BBC show. We provided clear and precise previous show logs to support the meeting. The said DJ had an expensive personal contract earning him a huge advance payment for a rolling Compilation CD series that was barely selling 10'000 copies with a now defunct music label, financed by a major international record company, who were really 'buying direct access to a BBC Radio 1 DJ for their future releases. This said DJ had personally persuaded this label, run by a guy (a former MD for the for-mentioned major international company) to sign a 'cover' dance release of an updated old pop song which had no future potential artist development. It was a 'featured' bygone artist of no real dance music credibility. The said DJ played this release 10 weeks in a row on his show in the vital first hour of the program, when he had the largest potential audience, he made it 'his best new tune of the week' and also interviewed the producer on this pre-weekend show. Something the DJ very, very rarely did for an unknown producer, unless they were an obvious new global talent. Then the said DJ door-stepped an important daytime DJ and playlist member personally early one morning outside the station asking them to put the said release forward for an extremely valuable playlist slot. Something the said DJ had never done before for a new release. The record was given a coveted A-list position on the station (normally 20 spins a week) became a hit and actually achieved a #1 position with the major company's massive sales machine (the same company financing the big 'advance' to the DJ) pushing the release hard to national retail, Woolworths, Our Price etc . There is no profit in the sales of singles but lots to be earned in compilation deals domestically and internationally. Ada, I knew the game then inside out, with the success of both Manifesto and NEO (Darude etc). The Radio 1 DJ's conduct stunk. The record quickly disappeared, the next release by the producer, without the previous coercing, was ignored and that producer never ever had another hit, but the crux of mentioning this was that "they, the BBC Radio 1 management of that time, never did anything about the clear mis-use for personal gain by the said DJ. They in fact told him (the said DJ) about the meeting and REFUSED to ask the MAJOR international label for a copy of the DJs Compilation contract which would clearly reveal the MOTIVE for the support of the said release and that they themselves had been manipulated by this said DJ who stood to substantially gain financially from the single's success and he, the 'said DJ' could continue with the next part of the 'his' contract and the forthcoming advances. In terms of impartiality it is the BBC's responsibility to the license paying public to fully investigate any or all misuse of position, especially if financial gain is suspected and very obvious. I know this personally from receiving the BBC code of conduct manual, some 50 pages, from Greg Dyke when he was then the BBC Director General. A BBC 'rule-book' that every BBC contracted employee, direct or freelance (as I was with West End Radio Productions) had to study and strictly adhere to. I've had that BBC bollocks on my mind for 18 years. This week with the terrible sad passing of Steve Wright, the best British Radio DJ ever, it leaves a very cold reminder of the publicly funded corporation's potential for making huge impactful errors. They took away his 'purpose' in life, for no reason. Like Terry Wogan, Steve Wright, could have continued inspiring other broadcasters and DJs well into his late years... By the way, the DJ mentioned above is still earning a large contract with the BBC, as paid for by the British public and was often given a 'large' pre-show big-up by Steve Wright personally prior to the start of his program... Yet 'he' is not fit to polish the shoes of the mighty Wrighty, in talent or ethics. There is so much more the British licensing paying public do not know..... Rest in peace Steve Wright, I loved every minute of working with you as a support DJ on your gigs and always really enjoyed your shows..
