@alanhunter2009 A better fit would've been Craig Charles, who sat in for Steve on occasions. He has a regular slot on 6 Music, between 1 P.M and 4P.M.

Agreed. After Vine at 2pm, I switch to Vigin Radio 80's plus for 2 hours, then at 4pm back to Radio 2 for Sara Cox. The Scott Mills show is dire. Even with all his years of 'experience' he still comes over as a nervous amateur.

How much of an impact did Steve have on so many of our lives? I was in a queue in Lidl yesterday and a couple were talking about him. In the workman's cafe yesterday morning i could here many blokes chatting about Steve. In the queue in the builders merchants 4 blokes were talking about Steve. That's quite something isn't it. And on the job yesterday, all us working men all in our late 50's, swapping stories and reminiscing about listening to Radio 1 and 2 'back in the day'. He really was a class act and an absolute legend. RIP Steve Wright, and thanks for happy memories.

I feel especially sad for the elderly and those with impaired eyesight. For these groups of people, who may well live alone, a familiar voice on the radio is a god send . When you think of the great D.J's we've had over the years, the great radio shows and compare that with today's offering, it's enough to make you weep. RIP Steve.

I'm just a humble listener to the old 'wireless' as my Dad called it, but still a a huge radio fan - even today, I must have 12 different radios in one form or other in my house LW/MW/AM/SW DAB, and even internet radio listener sometimes. When I emailed Steve Wright (in the afternoon) about 6 years ago, he played all my songs, a raft of Motown and Northern Soul music - the very best playlist I could think of, he made it sound magical in between the tunes, read the "shout-outs" to all my mates! I loved all his shows so much! People that know me were stopping me, at work, in the street and down the pub for months later, saying they'd heard my request on SW-ITA show, and they loved it too. Steve could have easily made it in the commercial world, was really sorry for him when he lost his slot, he should have followed Ken Bruce to GHR, BBC are a bunch of dooshe-bags!

My kids grew up with Steve Wright on the way home from school drive, on the way to school it was Sir Terry Wogan, who I’d listened to with my mum as a child. My grandson, now 11, was heartbroken when Steve was taken off the air … this is what the bosses don’t understand, radio is far more intimate than the telly, you’re in our homes, our car, embedded in our memories when we look back ( eg Steve told us about 9/11 as it was happening whilst I was driving) and are inter generational in their appeal. The BBC is paid for by us but is run like a business and not for the people paying for it. Thanks Adrian 🙏

Loved this video Adrian, very interesting & informative. I've said for a long time that Radio 2 are going the same way as Radio 1 did when Matthew Bannister was hired. Regarding the Chart Show, that was a must listen in the 70's & 80's and being No 1 meant something. Since the 90's I've never listened to a Chart Show, they don't mean the same anymore. I'm still in shock of Steve's passing, he was still at the top of his game and had so much more to give. His Radio shows were in my opinion, proper entertainment shows. An introduction theme tune, the best jingles, great music, informative chat, fun & an end theme tune, the complete package. Keep up the great work Adrian 👍👍👍

Some good points made. Steve Wright was more than a presenter, broadcaster,DJ he was one of the top radio communicators, innovators and pioneers creating the Afternoon Show Zoo format in the UK that held strong and just got better and better over four decades, quite an incredible feat when you think of it. I presented and produced radio shows myself and respected Steve’s genius and let’s not forget his talented posse team made a huge contribution that created that magic glue and radio fabric. I was mystified that Steve didn’t resign from the BBC completely when he was given notice on his Afternoon Show. He displayed integrity and grace when leaving but you could tell he was crushed. Would have loved to have seen him take a well earned break and return to the likes of Virgin, Greatest Hits etc with his Afternoon format who would have snatched him up in a heartbeat. Always thought the BBC missed a trick by not creating a Radio 2 Retro wavelength that could then have easily phased over all the usual suspects, Bruce, Mayo, Walker, Gambercinni, etc and still keep the listeners. Steve Wright left behind a great radio legacy and filled us with joy with thousands of afternoons of possibly the best radio show of its kind.

Well Steve mate, your now with all the lost music legends. You made a huge whole in people's life when you left your afternoon show. Why on earth the BBC changed this is beyond me. Years I listened to you, years. The day you stopped I didn't listen anymore. My afternoon was dull, my morning radio has also gone as Bruce had also been taken away. Listening to the snippets now that there replying is like gold tears. You will never ever be replaced, every one coming through after you knows this. King of music , Elvis maybe, king of F1 senna maybe . We have lost an ear each now your gone. BBC , you messed up big time , you have been the iceberg the titanic hit for Steve. Bad business around.

I switched to Greatest Hits Radio - yeah the ads are a pain but worth it for Simon Mayo, Ken Bruce etc - like you say it’s the warmth that is now totally absent from any R2 output and Steve Wright had that in spades. Been sobbing since the moment I heard - I started listening to him in 1982 when I was 14, that’s 42 years out of my 55 - didn’t realise quite how much I loved him 😢

I agree Theoobovril. I have never been big in to the radio, it's the studio chatter that bothers me. When I did listen to the radio I liked Roger Day. He played what I call bedroom music from the 60s and 70s. Obsecure 45's and deep albums tracks Sadly, the BBC took away his slots, he was too old for the BBC. I am only in my late 30s for goddness sake. Not everyone wants to hear the usual mainstream hits from the past over and over. However if I do have the radio on in the garden, it's the local community radio that broadcasts less than mile away, it's run by volunteers and a local shop keeper, they even let the school do work placements there. I think it's important to support anything local, it's a use it or lose it thing. If go to Bournemouth the hotels, shops and pubs normally have Wave 105 on instead of the local BBC station.

Interesting, from 1983 to 1989 I worked in night clubs as a DJ gradually working my way up to bigger venues etc., I managed to sit in on a few occasions with local (commercial radio) DJ’s just to see how things operate from a broadcasting perspective. It wasn’t for me, a really tough job with seemingly everybody after your seat, Steve Wright headed up the second wave of radio personalities after the originals who started Radio 1 and stayed at the top of his game until he was dropped he was the king of music based radio and gave his life over to entertain the masses. These days I tend to flit around radio depending on where I am and what I’m doing, a great insight you’ve given us there and yes, AI will replace with consummate ease most of the output available today unless things change and presenters get back to being edgy and fun…….

I can't recommend any radio for Adrian to tune into. I don't listen anymore. As a teenager back in the 80's though radio was just brilliant. Radio 1 during the day was fun especially cos of such as Steve Wright but in the evenings it really cam alive as the music was so wide and varied, notably the 10pm to midnight slot occupied by John Peel and then Tommy Vance on a Friday for the Rock Show. The music they introduced us to is still much loved and iconic today. After they'd finished on a Friday we 'd tune into Radio Aire out of nearby Leeds and James Whale's phone-in show was off the scale! At times it was INSANE the banter and hilarity you'd get from people ringing in. We'd all ring in to get on and see how long we could last before he cut us off! Such fun, so entertaining. As Adrian has said there is NOTHING like those today. NOTHING. And that is sad. There is nothing wrong with the BBC. There is a very lot wrong with the people who now work there.

Thomas' reasons for getting Steve Wright out of the afternoon slot after 23 years are besides the point. He was not fired from the BBC having two programmes. He was also in the ruck for the new BBC station coming. He was just moved, rightly given less to do. Steve Wright was near 70, became obese with health issues, from being a very slim and healthy man all his life. There was a good reason for dropping his schedule. He needed to change his lifestyle for health reasons alone. Then spend time with his family. At 70 you are actually in the November of your life, so need to wind down.

Other than Steve's Sunday Love Songs, I have boycotted Radio 2 and pretty much all BBC output since he was 'let go' from his afternoon slot . Steve had been a constant, daily part of my life for the past 30-40 years, with his amazing radio shows. A safe refuge from whatever else was going on in the world. Like many others I'm sure, I was devastated to hear of his passing. He felt like a friend, almost part of the family. Whenever I missed a show, I would stream it on catch-up. Luckily I have found a website with over 140 of his shows archived, and have been listening to these for the past few days, and they still bring a huge smile to my face. Listening to them, its hard to believe he is gone. However, I now have something worth while to listen to during my commute, and will play them to myself between 3 & 5pm like good old days. RIP Steve. A true entertainer and radio legend. You will be sorely missed by us all. 🥲

There's a lot of truth in that. And out of curiosity, I looked up the Spotify DJ feature, and from what I could tell, sure it's clever, but probably wouldn't keep my attention for long. Yet, we're only near the start of the AI road. Its easy to ridicule today's capabilities, but ignoring the ethical and legal issues, suppose for whatever reason I wanted to easily create, let's say, a completely new show edition of Steve Wright In The Afternoon, using Steve's and his team's voices and maybe even a few of his original jingles and production music and effects (or newly generated ones). And maybe an AI Adrian Allen show to play straight afterwards, with chit chat between the two them at the handover. And I want it in real time so they can talk about what's on today's news and maybe chat with an AI news presenter, and then do the same thing all over again tomorrow. And I want it all to sound like real live fresh witty personable radio, not like some robots droning on. Right now, at least as far as I'm aware, we're not even close to this. We can generate deep fakes of individuals voices, and AI can script dialogue, and folks can work with that stuff to create impressive results, but it takes substantial time and effort and expertise, it certainly doesn't happen instantaneously, and I don't think Adrian Allen needs to worry about an AI Adrian Allen taking his job just yet. Its cheaper and easier just to hire Adrian, and almost certainly the result will be better too. But the direction of travel is plain enough. And rather than "Make me a new edition of Steve Wright in the Afternoon", it maybe only needs to do "Make me a show in the style of Steve Wright In The Afternoon" to duck some of the deeper issues. AI is only going to become more capable over time, and once something is technically possible, its very hard to put a genie back in the bottle.

@@JohnWhipp I didn't mean to sound a grumpy old sod about AI. It's allowed some tiny community stations to produce news when they couldn't afford to take news from conventional sources. That's a major positive. I'm just surprised how eager some people are to dismantle great services that we won't ever get back in their present form when the alternatives are currently a bit rubbish to put it politely.

After the beeb sacked Steve from his prime time afternoon slot I turned off Radio 2 for the last time. Replacing him with a total 'unknown' (ive heard him and he frankly is very amateur compared to Steve!) THEN they sack Ken Bruce? The BBC sems to LIKE cutting its own throat by losing listeners/ viewers (after the Top Gear fiasco) Like the chap below says - my car radio was tuned to Radio 2. NOW Its GREATEST HITS RADIO or Classic FM. Frankly its time the government took away all this power BBC has - SCRAP the license fee and make them have adverts! It has become a dinosaur corporation running on ancient out of date rules. I think the last decent DJ thats left is Tony Blackburn. NOTHING can replace the GREAT Steve Wright.💔

If Gordon the Gopher and pop master were produced under the BBC banner, shouldn’t we ALL own the copyright? I’m sorry, much as I agree with a lot of the horrible changes at the bbc it has to remain publicly funded as that is the one thing that keeps that one Wolf - even if 99 others got in, from the door.

Holy moly. Your channel just came up in recommendations. Used to listen to you every night without fail down in South Wales when you were on Real Radio and your hair was like it was in the background. Did write into you after 9/11 and you read my email out. You got a sub. Steve Wright was a legend, always on throughout my life as a child and growing up. RIP Steve, thank you for all the years of joy you brought us. For you Adrian, Who ya daddy now then? 😎

Hi Adrian, I really enjoy your programmes on here, Victorian morbid curiosity of Alex Belfield's sensational world was what first brought me to your channel and I've enjoyed the rest since. Whilst you are offering to pull back the curtain on how radio works, may I ask your thoughts on the following queries that have crossed my mind since the news of Steve Wright's passing? Okay, thanks. So the 5pm news bulletin on R2 broke the news, although it was mid-way through when Mike Powell received the "Breaking News" and was very clearly emotional as he read it out. Moment here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jK5tTNQQK5w.html and he then stumbled through the bulletin, making quite a balls up of the remaining stories, very understandably. Out of the news, the show's host sounded incredibly upset as she reads a prepared script about Steve Wright. BUT JUST A SEC... She was presenting the usual _______(dross)___________ in the first hour. But then, during the 5'o'clock she has two minutes to; 1: Deal with the massive shock of a sudden loss of a personal friend; 2: Come up with a very heartfelt and well worded reaction; 3: Hold it together on air for two hours of extremely emotional reads from text and e-mail. SOMETHING SMELLS A BIT WHIFFY. Mike Powell reads the (mid bulletin) breaking news at 17.02. Cut to BBC News TV channel breaking the story at 17.09 and joined on the line at 17.10 by a very emotional Jeremy Vine, speaking on behalf of the Radio 2 Family. Moment here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EGvWUVnArgk.html MY QUESTION IS THIS Adrian, does it look like BBC Radio 2 staff knew all day that the 17.02 Breaking News was coming? That seems reasonable, and an Oscar should go to Sara Cox for her performance in the first hour. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, was this a massive crisis management effort from a radio station which knew that it had broken Steve's heart for less listeners? It all seems incredibly contrived. I remember once working with somebody who died suddenly, and although I had only known him for a matter of weeks, I was in tremendous shock and sadness for several hours after hearing about it, my body felt cold. I just couldn't believe what I'd heard. Sadly, most people know that feeling of utter disbelief and denial, even for people they don't really know. It makes you a bit dumbstruck. Do you remember when Mark and Lard stormed out of the R1 studio when their own news bulletin announced that their mate Kirsty MacColl had died, half way through their show? Anyway... I'm getting the sense of BBC crisis management over genuine, spontaneous sadness, but if you managed to read this far, I'd be interested to hear your point-of-view of how genuine it all seems in retrospect. For further listening, R5 Drive produced an amazing show, attracting Nicky Campbell, Bob Harris, Paul Gambaccini, Mitch Benn, Mark Goodier, Jeremy Vine, Tony Blackburn, Lewis Macleod and Mr Angry. All within 2 hours of the news of their great mate's untimely and completely unexpected death. It's all here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-USaGzfbExkI.html Cheers!

I feel that all us people who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s end up gathering on channels like yours Adrian to air our views as life as we knew it is changing beyond recognition and not for the better. I feel like we are all getting pushed into a corner. Is that not ageist? 🤔 All the amazing comments on here about Steve wright are proof of that! He was a legend but they thought he was past his sell by date. Did they really not see his talent and how much he was loved? Or do you think they didn’t care? If I was his boss I would have given him a raise and left him to do what he did best, not sack him!

Even the likes of Tony Blackburn and Johnny Walker are not sufficient for me to sit and listen to the death throws of a once great radio station. Like all the younger generation having been to the school of the WE "Forum", they feel that they can break something and say, "look, we fixed it".

Some great points. I strongly disagree about local radio though. Speaking as a listener, when done well, local radio (city-sized or county-sized) can be highly engaging and have greater relevance than national radio, and by the way, that can be as much true for commercial radio as the BBC, but that's a different discussion. The point is, where the option exists, I would usually choose a genuinely local radio station with good output over a national equivalent. Ideally that would mean a local broadcasting model similar to BBC Radio Two (a format that very evidently works well), with no ads, entertaining personable presenters who engage well with the locality, local features, airtime for local music alongside a wide range of popular mainstream music, including breakfast and drivetime shows with at least 50% music, a mixture of local and national/international news and sport, local weather etc, and coverage of local major events, preferably with live local output for at least 18 hours a day. There is still a place for national Radio 2 for those who prefer big-name national presenters. For whatever reason, many of the local stations today fall significantly short of the above, e.g. not enough music at peak times (often none at all), insufficient live output (especially in the evenings), similarly insufficient local output, and maybe they don't currently have a choice in some matters, but the network of local radio stations is a national asset and I think the answer is to set it up to succeed, not just put it out of its misery.

I hate Scott Mills, and Steve should have kept his slot. However the reason commercial radio play all the same sh1t is because they're all chasing the same audience figures, sooo boring. The BBC can try new stuff be innovative and interesting unlike commercial radio.

The fall in listeners is down to a number of factors, not just some poor presenting choices - though Simon Mayo leaving was a joy, as he's one of the worst broadcasters ever on radio. Even some of the older people - like me - are moving to Spotify, Amazon Music and the rest. Repetitious playlists and the lack of quality in a lot of the popular artists around now have also affected numbers. The role music plays in the cultural life of the country has lessened and people simply have other things to do. All these have an effect on listening numbers too. Oh and my favourite radio station in BBC GMR, my local radio station.
