Daym. He played like it was 3am, in a dark dingy bar, everyone was listening, and no-one was recording. True free abandon. One of the best performances of guitar playing EVER
That's exactly how I remember him. I was a regular at their shows at places like Continental Club and Antone's on the drag when I was about 18. GOAT (and I saw Clapton with Derek and the Dominoes when I was like, 11). Hats off to Tommy Shannon and Chris Lytle, too. What a trio. The day after I first saw him play I called one of my best friends, a musician in NYC. I said, I've just seen the best blues guitarist I've ever heard. It was just a normal night. No matter the mood, the crowd (tiny or huge), every moment live was worth it, for me.
SRV. Rocked it. In the80s. Live. Seeing him was off the hook. Playing his "box" in positions I wouldn't even dream of without! He blew my mind. A Master! And sober! Stevie Ray Vaughan lives. In hearts far and wide. Spreading all his love!
Stevie NEVER disappointed, he was always on the mark guitar wise, even when he was using drugs and this rare and different version offers another glimpse of a man who took his guitar and personal take on this song to a whole new level. Thank God for Stevie and the legacy he left us. I listen to his stuff all the time and check out the clips from Stubbs Barbecue for some real vintage Stevie ! No video but you'll get it.
I agree . He was young & hungry and just absolutely played his Ass off. Didn’t have a record deal and was not afraid to push his limits into the stratosphere musically. 👍
4:50 can't describe what I've just heard, honestly, I'm speechless, the man is just beyond what I think I know, everytime he stuns me with something, that was greatness in every sense, the peak of human expressionism, the guy is enlightened I swear :D I'm really blues fan, and I truly believe he's the best electric blues guitarist I've ever heard.
Yeah? Listen to Jimi Hendrix Live in san diego on the HENDRIX IN THE WEST album of Red House and also Red house, from RANDALL'S ISLAND July 1970.... from a previous post: OMG!!Bullshit!! NEVER!! Jimi has more talent and blues in his little finger than SRV ever ever will. If Jimi hadnt been there never ever would've a frank marino.robin trower, SRV ALL copied and pasted Jimi and sent their kids to college with this shit. if it had been Elvis you would've never heard the end of it, they never would have allowed that many to C & P ELvis like that,so obvisouly and blantantly. NO NOT Jimi !! Moe!!
We’re you lucky enough to have seen him perform live? Seeing him play live many times I can say your statement is true. He was the best. No one I ever saw play even came close.

@@keithmccaslyn2527 if u play guitar ull know what he means hendrix is grest for his artistic compositions but when it comes down to pure skill playing the intensity the tone the shit that makes ur fingers bleed no one ever did it better than srv ever period no one could be as better open channel as claptone said it and unlike hendrix srv stays in the same grove trough whole song not like not flying away making 3 4 5 grove switches .... its like when i liste to stevie i can hear the whole story he wants to tell with his guitar i feel every little change every bend hits like a truck and every time he dials it down quietly like a calm river before the waterfall.... its the feelings no one will ever translate better to a guitar than stevie no even jimmy or calptone or whatever blues guitarist.
@@keithmccaslyn2527 jimi has more blues? 😂😂 stop smoking man, srv takes more from Otis Rush and Albert King than Jimi and he was pure blues beast jimi played a lot of effects to make god knows what sounds, they’re two completely different players and SRV didn’t need as many effects to sound good just straight up from his heart.
This recording in all its hissy glory is a true anomaly because he plays so many licks that were unique and different to any other time...all that low angry gutteral stuff at 7.10 and 9.28 is almost scary and all that crazy wild flailing stuff at 9.08 is him pushing it way past usual limits ...wow just wow
Just pure natural flow. Where the hell did it all come from? And then the usual meek and mild, "Thank you so much". Thank YOU so much should be the comeback. Yup, thank you Stevie for everything you gave us, and it keeps on giving. 💙💔. ☮️to all.
Exactly!! couldn't have said it better myself! And this recording perfectly encapsulates all that. As well as what I've always thought too. you hear a veryyyy similar tone and style such as this when he got wild as hell playing with Buddy Guy lots of times too
About 4:41 to 4:42.. I have always loved that!! He always did it, sometimes slower and sometimes faster.. and it was just this nasty kind of roll.. lol can't really describe it but ever since I first discovered Stevie years, and years ago.. that lick always stuck with me and I love it to death. Its something you can't really explain or put your finger on. So to speak lol but it was definitely unique to Stevie.. and was one of many stamps he put on his style.. never really heard anyone do it before.. not like that. So it always stuck with me and have used it many, many times.. but no one can do it like Stevie but that goes without saying haha
@@jjh11 I found the whole thing here on RU-vid (audio), but would like a silver pressed CD or LP of it. I guess it is also known as the "Hendrix Gig" because of all the Jimi covers on it. I will track it down if it exists. Thank you!
@@ViolentBlasphemy Hey! Did you find one? I’ve been collecting Stevie’s music for a very long time, I have a lot but I don’t have this! I want it! I absolutely love all of the live shows!
People love to say Jimi is a better player!!! Okay I don’t think you’re wrong per say but let’s be honest Stevie was the complete package, his voice was honestly light years better than Hendrix and his playing was always full of intention and never lost. Hendrix at times you could tell was uninspired or clearly not pushing himself at times and his voice just kind of was alright. Love them both but SRV was just all around better. I think Jimi was a better songwriter though that is a damn fact.
Could be several reasons, in our own band back in the day, our stuff sounded slightly different from bar to bar and depending on how good or bad the sound man was or in some cases if there even was one . They can be stubborn and heavy handed sometimes.

Who are you commenting to? Anyway, you must be joking. Ive lovedJimi H. since 54 years ago and still do. But Stevie is just as brilliant, if not a level above. Hendrix was a master composer, poet and guitarist and his 'little finger was long and lean n made for the strings. But Stevie's hands and arm power was amazing and it showed in his endurance. Both he and Jimi were very low key and humble, no vanity at all. They've probably been hanging out together all this time, talking shop. Btw...everyone knows Stevie didn't have any children to send to college. Silly boy. ☮️
