I can understand Stew not being everyone's cup of tea but the craft and structure that goes into some of his work is amazing. The way he can divide a room and win them back over is remarkable.

He truly is a master of his craft. One of my favorite aspects of his comedy is that he's somehow managed to make it so that anyone defending him against critics automatically sounds like a pretentious asshole. I can't tell you how many times I've been in conversations with people and am forced to say "you just don't get what he's doing, it's operating on so many levels" which is a very pretentious thing to say... but is also 100% true. I like to think that Lee takes great pleasure in knowing that his fans have to squirm uncomfortably a little every time they argue on his behalf, which is yet ANOTHER layer to the bit. I've not seen anyone else try that and I don't know what to call it other than genius.

I've seen Stewart Lee 3 times live and he really is the most interesting as well as hilarious comedian I've ever seen. After all the gigs, he was sitting next to the merch stall, chatting with anyone who was buying stuff and signing items. All his live show DVD's are worth seeing.

I used to wear a balaclava as a kid in the north of England in the 50s/60s ........ it was part of your winter gear with a scarf, mittens, windcheater and wellies

Until you mentioned it, I had forgotten having a balaclava in the winter as a kid. I'm 65 and went to school on the Wirral, NW England. And yes, the scarf and mittens too! 😃👍

each one of his stand ups become more and more surreal and refined, it really is like a series of films in which each one is better than the next (apart from his latest snowflake/tornado thing, which whilst had some good stuff wasn't as good)

There’s a complementary twist in the history of ideas. England was conspicuous among the leading European nations of the day (France, Germany and, as it turns out, Scotland) for not having its own enlightenment. The Scottish enlightenment was a remarkable tour de force in our self-conception as moral agents. Despite its puritanical post-Renaissance roots, by 18th century Scotland was a world leader in terms of an ambitious, liberal moral philosophy; a debunker of dogma. Even the German Aufklärung owed much to the Scots (Kant famously acknowledged the importance of David Hume). England on the other hand was, for better or worse, in the middle of an Industrial Revolution. *The* Industrial Revolution. Stewart Lee, despite himself, is on the right track when he ironically attributes to Scotland a precocious liberalism.

@@thegroovetube3247 I get that his whole schtick is satire and irony done as satirically and ironically as possible. Maybe he's satirising someone or some entity specifically by doing the explanations that I'm not aware of, I don't know who or what they may be. Maybe the joke is to say that people "don't get it", which would be meta as fuck and a little cringey, but sure, whatever. It's just that trying to vaguely multiply said satire and irony in the way he does it is simply not appealing to me, and don't tell me that's not what he's doing because it is.

I like both. Sean is really missed. Stew is a master of what he does though and I don't think there's been anyone like him that has mastered the structure of stand-up like he has. The funniness of it is subjective, like all comedy, but the call backs, the use of repetition, the messing with the audience's heads by playing expectation against them etc is gold.
