Sticky VNT Turbo Vanes Clean - P0234 / P0299 Overboost - VW / Audi / Seat / Skoda

Welcome back Bluudies to the channel. There is a common problem amongst the Vag community and perhaps other makes of cars too where the VNT Turbos can stick in the High boost position, and cause P0299 Overboost code. This happens when a build up of Soot/Oil residue siezes the Variable nozzles on the turbo and then the turbo can't adjust how much boost there is at low RPM. In this video I use a can of Oven cleaner which is perfect for desolving the Soot and Oil residue built up on the turbo and restore the vehicle to its former glory.
Unfortunately this wasnt the problem for my Van as mine has a Underboost problem, which I diagnose and resolve in another Video. Check out the other videos on my channel for more videos.

1. Poke a small hole in the centre of a Pringles can lid (may be different on other engines, mine is 2.0tdi 16v BKD ), small enough to only fit a WD-40 spray tube through it. The lid fits perfectly to seal the exhaust side of the turbo to prevent the over cleaner from coming out. 2. Disconnect the actuator from the VNT arm by removing the c clip on the actuator arm (in the middle of the turbo) be careful not to let the clip flick off losing it. (if you are worried you will lose the clip leave it on and skip this step but isn't as easy to more the VNT or getting a feel for what the inside of the turbo is like.) 3. Depending on your car, make sure the actuator is pushed away from you, this opens up the channels in the VNT and allows the oven cleaner to flow deeply into the turbo. Start to spray the oven clean inside the turbo using a wd40 tube on the oven cleaner can. Insert wd40 tube through the hole in the centre of the Pringles can lid, you want to spray it in different positions of the turbo fins so it expands all around the VNT. 4. Let the oven clean sit for 5-10min, then return back and move the actuator arm up and down, if it is stiff you can use a stubby 14mm on the actuator arm for leverage to move it up and down. 5.repeat steps 4 and 5 until the actuation of the VNT is smoother 6. remove Pringles can lid, wipe any visible oven cleaner away, reinstall exhaust and take car for a brisk drive. Other common issues with older 1.9 TDI's is the failure of the N75 boost sensor, Boost leaks, worn out/old turbo, excessively retarded engine timing (common after timing belt change done poorly). Darkside Developments are the only people I would personally trust to do a proper timing belt change that finely adjust the cams for optimum performance and driving style.

This will be my next job as I’ve got overboost but only going up steep hills.. so far I’ve changed N75, boost pressure sensor and 2 intercooler pipes. Took the egr off & that looks pretty clean, going back from the egr to the down pipes looks a bit sooty so hopefully the turbo just needs cleaning.

Definitely following on this. I have exactly the same problem with my 1.3cdti Corsa D. No power, no boost, not moving. Dealership couldn't find the issue though..

It's a well know technique that has been around for a while. Oven cleaner has pretty much all the same active chemicals as Turbo cleaners.

The cheap oven cleaner works just as well I used it on the EGR on my old van.

Hey Carlos. Its something I've looked into. But at the moment my 1.9 BRS works fine so I'll continue with the camper conversion. At the point my engine dies ill make the swap. I do admit it needs a touch more power.

hello, after letting mr.muscle act for about two hours or so, did you clean or rinse the turbo with a product to remove mr.muscle? Or did you just start the vehicle because mr.muscle tends to evaporate? greetings from Spain.

So I've got my T5 2.5TDi up on ramps starting to tackle this. It's a 4 Motion with 3 zone climate so there's a bit more stuff in the way and less space with the bigger motor. But the downpipe clamp on the turbo is the same. Released the Allen bolt but can't prize the clamp off. It wraps around the join and seems totally immovable... What's the trick??

Vacuum actuator will be a likely cause, very common, you can prove it with a cheap vacuum gauge and VCDS, the gauge won’t hold the vacuum if it’s at fault..

Im getting P0234 overboost on my focus tdci. But its become gutless.. No limp mode.. But like, No boost power, takes me longer than usual to accelerate to 60mph.. How can that be? if the Vanes are stuck shut, giving me overboost. Surely id have too much boost... But my car feels gutless... Well, it comes and it goes... Feels fine for few days, then gutless for a week... etc

Need to check for codes, it its in limp mode there will be engine management light and a error code. That will help point you in where to look.

My concern with this would be the foam expanding back up the exhaust manifold into the head. If that happens there is a risk of hydrolock. In fairness, i haven't read of this happening.

I appreciate the comment. From all of the threads I've read on the forums online, I haven't seen a bad report on it. End of the day the foam is blown straight out the exhaust.

Perhaps a paper thin sheet of ally if left for days but this old chestnut always makes me laugh The cleaner will not in anyway damage the aluminium at all.
