I currently fly fighters in the airforce and I will never forget the first time I flew into a commercial airport. Late in the training program, just prior to you becoming qualified you have to fly to a commercial airport, land, stay overnight and depart the following day. This is so you can get used to what it’s like, the procedures and dealing with a high volume of traffic with your instructor in the backseat guiding you through and ready to take over if required. As a young pilot with limited hours in the jet it’s like a whole other world. We all that day had to be reminded that ATC were talking to us as we had never heard so much chatter on the radio before. Oh and they don’t make it easy, they ensure that when you arrive and depart it’s peak hour lol. I will never forget getting distracted seeing a 747 take off lol. When we had parked up it is the only time in my career to date I have been glad to get out of the jet, I couldn’t get out quick enough 😂. Now it puts a smile on my face seeing the way people react to seeing the jets at the airport. Thank you for what you do, and to all maintenance staff airforce and commercial. Without you we could not do what we do.

Jason, first of all, I want to thank you for your service, my respect and my admiration to your dedication. Second of all, it’s a beautiful thing to be on this side of Aviation, it’s a feeling like no other, you have to be addicted to Aviation, and trust me I’m addicted much like you are. We are people that are cut from the same cloth, and we understand what it takes to make this machine run. I just want to say thank you for being here and taking your time, expressing your memories, and taking your time to watch my silly banter of my day. I appreciate you sir

@@StigAviation Thank you I truly appreciate it. It is a privilege and one that means the world to me. It is absolutely a beautiful thing to be on this side of aviation and you are absolutely right it is a feeling like no other. I almost have to pinch myself sometimes as I’m walking out to the jet, looking at it thinking man I’m about to climb up into the cockpit and fly that thing. You are absolutely right you have to be addicted to aviation, that addiction and love for it is what drives you, and has you at work every day loving what you’re doing, we are definitely cut from the same cloth so I know you completely understand what I mean and understand what it takes to make these machines work. That’s why I ensure that when I am walking to my jet and my ground crew salute me I do not just give them a quick salute back and continue on, I ensure I stop, look and acknowledge them and I always thank them for getting the aircraft ready, because without people such as yourself I’m not in the air flying. Should the need arise sure I can be in the air in minutes to defend the airspace etc, but that is only possible because maintenance staff have gone over the aircraft with a fine tooth comb and ensured it is in good working order, safe to fly, it has all the equipment I need onboard etc. Thank you for sharing your “silly banter”, and providing me in my downtime with plenty of entertainment. I can’t get enough of it, seeing all the aircraft from a different perspective ( commercial aircraft I mean lol) because being cut from the same cloth you will understand this but whilst I may be in the airforce and fly fast jets I still get exited at seeing say a 787 up close, or an A380, 777, you name it I am still watching them. I will still go to airports and watch the aircraft take off and land etc in my downtime when I’m home, and when my career in the airforce is done I fully intend to move into the commercial sector and fly commercial. I can’t imagine life not flying, or not being involved in aviation. It would be great if at that time someone such as yourself was one of the maintenance engineers checking over the aircraft I was flying, your passion and enthusiasm and pride in what you do I respect and admire. If you were working on the aircraft I was flying I would have every confidence that it would be in top condition and ready to fly.
@jasoncrawford5350
@jasoncrawford5350 6 месяцев назад
@@StigAviation Also I was more then happy to share my story/memory. It’s something I will never forget. To just quickly add to it I remember saying to my instructor in the back when we had landed I am amazed airports run so smoothly, and are so organised because this was absolute chaos lol.

I used to work C-5's in the USAFR, they're beasts for sure but great rides. This plane was a C-5C now modified into the C-5M, it's a "SCuM" bird in that it's been modified on the inside to accept large space components for NASA, the giveaway is the aft center cargo door which is in 2 halves as opposed to 1 piece that would retract aft and up. There's no troop compartment, it's a trip to see inside. Yes, they're the largest in the USAF inventory. The "jackscrews" you mentioned on the gear are ballscrews, they're for the kneel system. They don't turn. Picture a big hidden nut that gets turned that's inside the yoke of the gear. When the plane kneels/unkneels, that "nut" turns about those stationary ballscrews, the plane then goes up and down, I think...3'. The plane can aft, level and forward kneel. The gear stays fixed, it's the crosshead on top of the gear that goes up and down w/the ballscrews.. At 2:24 you see on the upper right the cover that hides the mechanicals (essentially a wide chain that engages the sprockets on the "nut" (I've only changed 1 out before) underneath and the kneel motor and rev counter is what is hanging down from that cover. Yes, you guessed right that the exhaust is the APU exhaust, there's 2 APU's. You mention the level of engineering on the gear. When I started on C-5s the gear was all torque tubes and gearboxes, they got modified to what you see now to push/pull rods.

68-216 landed gear-up at Travis (late 80s?) and was modified as stated above from A-model to C-model (SCM) and eventually M-model during AMP/RERP. 68-213 was also modified after it landed short at Shemya, Alaska. Both aircraft support NASA to include movement of the James C. Webb Space Telescope.

I thought those screws had to do with raising/lowering the bird. I saw a C5 at Portsmouth NH, during Thunder Over NH 9/11/2021. And there was far less clearance below the gear doors on that one, than on this one.

I flew on the C-5 from Japan back to the old El Toro Marine Corps air station, with a 4 hour stopover at Hickam AFB in Hawaii. This was during my marine corps days back in the late 80s/early 90s. If I remember correctly, there were 74 seats in the passenger cabin. The cabin is in the upper rear of the fuselage, just below the vertical stab. The cabin gets really cold at altitude and you MUST have a good jacket on or you will be really miserable. The seats were very uncomfortable and minimalistic. Some of the guys actually slept on the floor because they found it more comfortable. The air force crew served us box lunches where the sandwiches inside were still frozen. It didn't matter though, we were so happy to be going home and what better way to do it than on a C-5. The C-5's back then still had the old TF-39's which were the coolest sounding engines in the history of engines. Much respect to the air force ladies and gentlemen who fly and maintain these incredible aircraft.

Most USAF transport aircraft utilize LOX. It has higher density, so you can get more oxygen on the airplane vs Gaseous O2. There are converters that convert the liquid to gas and then gas lines distribute the gas to the individual oxygen regulators at the crew stations.

Easily one of the most fascinating and engaging jobs on the planet -- in arguably the best place on the planet to have said role -- and, working for what I personally believe to be one of the finest commercial aviation carriers. What a platform to share your passion and youre doing it so well! Btw I, too, share your love for all things wheeled and winged, and have probably seen every single episode of the Clarkson/Hammond/May iteration of TopGear UK. A wonderfully produced show in its heyday, it was -- as they so often bemoaned -- both educational and entertaining. Hmm, I see a certain duality there with your own programming emerging... *cues 'Jessica'* "TONIGHT: -- a bouncy Boeing has a broken shimmy damper...we take your guesses on what this button does...a 'Galactic' special guest on our international ramp...James unclogs a galley drain ('FOR *bleeps* SAKE, COFFEE GROUNDS AGAIN!?')...and The Stig takes the new Airbus A320 'N'-NEO around our ramp!" *duh-duh-duh, dee-dahhh, dur-duurrr!* "HELLO AND WELCOME LADIES & GENTLEMEN!"

A lot of USAF quad jets have dual APUs, like you saw on the C-5M. This is for emergency starting all engines at the same time for emergency scramble. Hello again Stig! It just dawned on me I sure hope American appreciates all the work you do not only for the company as an awesome employee but for these awesome videos you do representing the company and the knowledge you have so willingfully sharing with your viewers and educating people on the different aircraft and all of the systems. I would have loved to work with someone like yourself when I was at American who had the same passion and enthusiasm as I had working there as I see in yourself. We would have made a great team! Unfortunately in my 25+ years i only worked with 3 other people who shared my same passion and it sure made going to work so enjoyable. I knew of so many people that actually hated working at American and were only there for the paycheck. And the trouble makers don't even get me started on that... LOL. Some people are just so unappreciative of a good thing which is so sad. And i know that you know what I'm talking about when i say this and that is, I once had a CC tell me that he use to tell some of these people if you hate working here so much try getting a job in the "real world" making the kind of money you do here for the amount of work you do or in many cases didn't do. They don't exist. I never will forget when I was in orientation the instructor wrote these letters on the chalkboard if you want to have a lengthy career at AA....S.D.S.U.R.P. It stood for Sit Down Shut Up & Receive Pay. To this day I still remember that and when people do ask me for any advice I might have about working at American that's one thing I always tell them. Keep uo the stellar work because it makes me so damn proud that I was able to pass the torch to such a great gentleman who has the same work ethics like I had. Hats off to you my friend!

You’re absolutely right and trust me I know exactly what you’re talking about, I see it every day. And much like you said if you don’t like the job, the door is right there. But for me, this is the best job in the world I was born for this

I just wish more people, especially trainers who had as much passion as this guy. I’ve had several trainers who were just so negative and being a newish guy to aviation it can be a bit sad to see that. This is why I’m doing this, I need to pass down my knowledge before it dies with me. It’s my duty to make a better tomorrow.

indeed, you've come across a ferrari 458 GT3 car. despigned for GT3 racing, essentially a class where they get a bunch of factory supercars and sports cars and deeply modify them to be about equal on performance for competition's sake. they do a lot of endurance racing where multiple drivers swap out of the same car in races lasting up to 24 hours, usually with 2 or so professional drivers there based on merit and one old rich guy who is pretty bad at racing but loves cars and basically funds the whole operation.

Yes the C5s jackscrews are a combination of squatting functions and rotation function when main gear are stowed. They turn 90 degrees before rotating up into those bulbous belly fairings. You were also correct about the APU on the side of that fairing. The Liquid Oxygen or LOX is used to provide the air used in the crews oxygen masks...C5M is the newest upgrade of the galaxy which got the new more powerful and quieter engines and a nice little glass flight deck update. She's a beast! Edit That Ferrari looks like a 458 (headlights) but I'm not sure if Ferrari made a track only version of it. I was more impressed witht the black 911you just non chalantly passed by. It looked like a widowmaker (930) # first glance....😮 EDIT EDIT Oh you said 993 meh I'd still take her home but it wouldn't be my poudest conquest 😂

Was going to say, the jackscrews on the gear allow the aircraft to "squat' on the ground to get the ramps closer to the ground for less of a breakover angle on said ramps for offload/onload of payload. I think the only way the C-5 will stay in service past 2030 is if there is a need to transport cargo that cannot be borken down and is larger than than the C-17 can carry...
@sc8243
@sc8243 Месяц назад
LOX! Liquid Oxygen. I was a crew chief in the USAF on C-141s and did a fair amount of transient work too. Did LOX servicing on 141s and a few C-5s. Anyone who went through Sheppard AFB tech school in the old days will remember Pizza Face. It's what happened to an unfortunate airman when sprayed in the face with LOX. Scared the crap out of us, which was the point. Make damn sure the fittings are tight!

Not a pilot, or work with aircraft but I have worked with O2 and LOX or liquid 02 The reason it is used because you can store a very small amount of LOX in a small very insulated container. When allowed to evaporate will expand 860 times it's size thus producing much more gaseous oxygen for use for inhalation.

One thing looks difficult in USA, the hyper long working shift. In Europe and specificly in France, the standard shift is 7/8 hours. It's allowed to go more but not over 11 hours 1 time in the week. Remind that i left the ramp in 2016 after 22 years on the birds and it's missing me. But my body will be unable to do the job 4 seasons now... Health... Thank you Stig for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. I've been binge watching all of your videos for the past week and look forward to many Stig Shifts to come. As a maintainer on this plane it’s just funny to see the perspective of an outsider. The screws on the MLG are ball screws used in conjunction with the fwd and aft loading system to “kneel” the airplane to ether “level” “fwd” or “aft” modes. Based on what’s being loaded in needs a different configuration. As far as LOX we have 2 converters. A 25 and a 75. Filled via carts and is incase of depressurization liquid oxygen in the converters will flow through lines to the oxygen masks.
