IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ!!!
Testing a new ms 660 Stihl for a guy in Nevada, 390XP for a guy also in Nevada, a 288XP for a guy in Idaho, and my 395XP with a big bore kit. This is pretty much the initial testing of the 660 and has carb issues as well as a slight mod that I tried but not really sure if it for the better. Standing alone, it runs pretty good. The 288 has the worst chain but still runs very well. I know the 288 would cut a little faster if the chain was in better condition and be on par with the 390. The 390 and 395 are pretty much dialed in and it shows.
Both the 390 and 288 have a bored venturi and reshaped combustion chamber. They are in a very high state of tune with a lot of work on the cylinders.
The 288 was a nose bleed project. It had to be completely torn down to replace the crank, bearings, and seals. The carb and top end are also new. Gracefully, the owner has been very patient since this project has taken TONS of extra time. I would like to say thank you for the consideration.
The cut started out at 27" and ended up at 32". This means that the 660 had about a 27" cut, the 390 had about a 28.5" cut, the 288 had about a 30" cut, and the 395 had about a 32" cut all measured across at the widest part.
The three small saws are sporting a 115 3/8s driver bar and the 395 has a 125 3/8s driver bar. All four saws have an 8 tooth sprocket.
Take note of all of the above when making your determination on the fastest...
Thanks for watching!
P.S. Cursing to get your point across is not considered more intelligent.............

Hello. A lot of the time, I will have had no fuel (completely dry) in the tank as well as a dry carb. It takes a fair amount of cranking to get fuel in the circuit in that situation. Looking at the timed runs: 660 27.55 390 18.49 288 21.18 395 19.42 So the 390, like I had said in the beginning, was the fastest. Thanks for watching.

@FRUNTCASTER Yes, and the extra flow from the relieved mufflers. But sometimes it is to much since the ratio of air is soooooo much higher. YAH,,,, when I get rich and famous, I will bore about 10 in very close incremental up steps and then dyno them. It's the only way to be exact, however after running saws for so long you can kind of tell what is what by the way they pull. Just not in tenths of a hp if you know what I mean. Thanks for watching!

@collinrogers1190 HA! HA! There are thousands of acres of timber in the Sierra Nevada mountains west of Reno to the north and south. So the trees are mostly in Eastern Cali. which is where these guys are working, I believe. Thanks for watching!

Just picked up a 390xp. A pure beast! I agree with previous comments about properly sharpened chains and I'll like to add the users skill plays a major part in this too. A new bar and chain on top conditioned saws stihl or husq is only as lethal as the user abilities allow him to be with utter percision when cutting thus why some use husq and other stihl plus everyones' personal experience with either saw maker which varies greatly. Me I perfer Husqvana but I like Stihl they are the best brands.

@JRFFRB I have worked on a few of the 660 BBs. Not really impressed. The last 2 660s with stock bores out of Nevada ran way better. Thanks for watching!

Awesome! Can you tell me more about your 395xp? I assume the BB kit pumps it up to 100cc and you ported that. Any recommendation on a quality kit? I haven't heard about doing a bore on a carb, I think stock is like 76mm, do you know how much it is bored out? What did you do for a muffler mod? Dual port?

@tufferenhell The 046 and 066 w/full wrap handle bars? The owner of this 066 told me they are not available in the US. I, personally, never tried to buy an 066 Nuker. I did own an 046 warm though.

Wow great video I love Husqvarna, you can do so much more with them and they are soooo much easier to work on than stihl. I have cut with, and fallen trees with Stihl, Husky, and Jonsered, and Husky and Jonsered top the Stihl and that is my non bias opinion. The 288 in my humble opinion is one of, if not the best saw ever made, I also love my 4 372 I have. One thing i love about stihl is they have a bit more chain speed than Husky, but no torque. Husky combines torque and chain speed

Really looking hard at 395. It seems like a pretty bombproof design for all around work. Have to see how it fairs stock vs my zipped 372s and may consider getting a hop up job on it if not up to snuff. Thanks for the vids. Enjoy the heck out of them
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 2 года назад
Stumpshot hi. They are pretty bullet proof if not leaned down to far. A 395 runs nice in stock form amd will whoop up on an also stock 661 or 066. How the 372 fairs will depend upon who did the work. The 395, once zipped, is a big wood saw imho. Why pack around all the extra weight when a smaller, well tuned powerhead will out perform a stock 395. Thanks for watching.

@@hotsaws101 I work with a bunch of fellas that have this thing for the orange and white saws and are in need of a good whooping. Unfortunately I only have a 28 in bar in the west coast trim setup. I've thought of running 32 in on the 372s but never really got a good handle if a 372 oiler would support a 32 in bar or not. The 28 in setup is a real screamer no doubt. ( not way leaned out really ) so I'd almost be willing to run a heavier outfit for the bigger yellow pines I run into often enough.

@@stumpshot9970 Husky oilers are known to be far superior to their Stihl counterparts. I ran a 33" on some of the true XPW saws and cut a lot of volume. The key is that all oilers work good when the chain is pulling chips & not "dust". Husky oilers will do a little bit better than the Sthil with high dust content though. A stock 372 is not going to win again a zipped (provided the tuner knows what they are doing) ms 362 at some build levels. So I guess that needs to be a consideration. A 395 is a lot of heft to pack around when a good running 390 will work imho. I always tried to consider multiple angles when choosing the gear for a particular strip.

i got a 395 big bore. , i built the whole thing. it has great compression . got a lean issue after running for a while ..after a few carbs and boots and lines..it seems to be the tank vent ... DWL i cant wait to get that saw barking
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 3 года назад
Robert hi. Retro fit the 394 vent. The in the carb box design of the 395s is known to get slight plugged and cause the engine to run slightly lean - read lean seize, meltdown, grenade, etc. Seems to be a good fix. Thanks for watching.

Hey jack what bb cylinder is on that 395xp?
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 2 года назад
Rowan hi. A bit belated... I cannot remember. I know that it was not a high quality assembly. One of the reasons the 390 "wind-ed'. It ran alright though. Most of the AM kits have bad timing & are way sloppy tolerance wise. A couple of the reasons they underperform. Thanks for watching.

Good video brother! Them old boys, like Gene, are the salt of the earth. . . We can learn a lot from them fellas. I take it you had to bore the carbs to keep up with the extra scavenging from the porting?
@davehakes7750

Actually, in my humble opinion I gotta disagree, stihl makes a great saw but i prefer husky One example of why is I had a 372xp stolen from me out of my truck after work well, about 2 years later a guy found it in the swamp 1 mile down the road it matched the serial num of the old saw so we took it home put some deep creep in the cylinder because it had a lot of rust and crap in it and after about half a can of deep creep it started up and it still runs to this day

Picked up a 372xp, used of course. I'm enjoying both the 372xp and the 288xp (I think it's an xp). Anyway, bucking big trunks, the 288 eats almost like butter... As trunk thins, I switch to the 372 just cause it's lighter... Of course all my limbing is with the 346xp... talk about a lot of punch from a light saw... Nice. Getting mine ported this week! (I'm an old guy so need all the help I can muster... ;)

Why do you assume the 390 superior to the 395 and if so, why do you have a 395? I'm considering 390, 395, and 3120 for felling and milling large black walnut and oak slabs.
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 3 года назад
toadamine hi. In certain applications with the associated bar length, a 390 is the better choice between itself and the 394/5 platform. This comes after years of using all three in various ways on different ground contours, many different wood types and densities, with an array of bar lengths. So it's not really an assumption. Black Walnut is dense & hard. The 3120 is going to have more power all saws stock. But it doesn't have a high speed needle to moderate the wot air fuel ratio. Better have sharp chains at all times, lest a guy burn one up. You never said if the end choice was going to get zipped either. The right guy can make a 395 out cut a stock 3120 by a fair amount. Fully adjustable carburetor on the 395s. Thanks for watching.

up here in British Columbia where we fall real timber, Stihl is the saw of choice for professional fallers. 660's for general use an 880's for the big ones.. stock too.. the kids get their saws hopped up but us old timers know how to file.. you can put any kid with a hot saw to shame by just learning how to properly file a chain.. the chain is everything. end of story..
