THANX for the saw story's. I'm a YARDER LOGGER , from NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, way up in the woods, I know I've heard all the CALIFORNIA jocks, any way , my fall'in saw was 064 mag very tough strong runner when the 066 bought 2 of them, I sold one of the 066's and bought a 440 mag ,best thing that ever happened, we got a lot of big timber here, but the trees aren't as big as thay were and we were run'in 066's with a 36" bar's but when the timber started getting smaller, that 440 mag was THE saw with 28inch bar was light and fast enough to do most the work I needed to do and,still had the 066 mag , for backup. Now got a bunch a saws STIHL AND HUSKY and love'em all !!! But now I'm 60 and retired from job related ,that's another story!!!! P.S. one day U mentioned wanted to fall 1 of these big cali dug fur's come out to the west coast and I'll find U some !!!!! THANK 'S from NOR-CAL!!!!

i have a 440 dont get me wrong! if I'm out firewooding or something, 440 all day, its lighter... if Im at work, making A LIVING with a saw... 460 MAG ALL DAY LONG! I always throw my 440 in as a backup saw, incase the 460 blows, gets squished, what ever... but if I'm LOGGING, 460.......

Hi Harvey and Cullen!!😀😀 Harv, you have 2 of my most favorite saws that I ever had sitting there!!😀 That 046 doesn't have too many hours on it. The way I can tell that is the ribs on the handle are still like new. Once you get around 7 to 8 hundred cords on them the ribs will be getting pretty smooth on the bottom side of the top half of the handle. It's too bad that they get worn out and just aren't worth keeping them going. Take care my friend!!😀😀 Logger Al

i work for a tree service and we have the local city contract here and weve been taking out 1-6 ash trees everyday and unless its more then 3 feet ill always go for the 461 or if its only 24ish ill grab the 400c which has been suprising me with the power for how light it is. but when its real big i always go for the 661 theres really just no comparison in the power. if your good and sharp that 661 just eats wood without skipping a beat. im yet to run any ported saws but i would like to get one sometime.the 660s though do get real heavy and will turn your arms to jello in a hurry lol. great video

Have a question about what parts are causing the weight differences between 046 and 044? Stihl manuals show weight without bar of the 044 at 13lbs and the 046 at 14.3lbs. I would think the weight of cylinder and piston together would be similar, but maybe the 046 has more material or uses a heavier metal, or is the weight difference in other parts? This question comes up because a friend has concerns as we pick aftermarket parts for an 044 cylinder and piston repair that using a larger 52mm big bore kit and more horsepower would wear out and fail the other older parts of the chainsaw rather quickly than a 50mm, and we wouldn't get to enjoy our repair for too long. Should we enjoy more horsepower of the 52mm or make a conservative purchase of a 50mm kit? thanks.

I also love these two saws. I have one 044 I ported and one 046 that I put a hyway big bore kit on. It's nice! Lots of power! I have several 440's, and here is where I have a few questions. I have yet to have a 044 bottom end open. However I have had several 440's completely apart and was surprized to see Japan stamped bearings. I know for a fact that these saws had never been open since new. So when did a German made saw start using Japanese parts? Did this also happen with the 044? My uneducated guess would be no, simply based on my observation that the old 044's seem to far outlast the 440's.
@Redmech80
@Redmech80 3 года назад
I’m not a saw expert, but the classic John Deere 4010 tractors built back in the 60’s would have Japanese bearings in them from the factory. Would amaze the farmer/owner every time.

Wait a big-bore 46??? I thought the 460 already was a big-bore? Isn't it the 440, with 2mm wider bore cylinder&piston put on it? I'm eager AS HELL to find a good 440 V 460 comparison, to learn how Stihl approaches accommodation of larger-bore top-ends, as I've got a pair of 660's & big-bore 56mm kits that I'm putting on and, having recently learned that Stihl effectively did 'big bore 440' with the 460, I've been watching these 4** videos hoping to find the comparisons/differences in specs for how Stihl does the big-bore 440 (ie, the 460!) I'd worried, but expected, that they would NOT just slap a new top-end on and call it done, and Harv mentioning a "heavier frame" on the 460 does support my thinking/fear that the entirety of the bottom-end/crankcase of a 460 is "proportionately larger&stronger than a 440's, to account-for the new bore"....in which case it means that running aftermarket big-bores is absolutely "far more pressure on the saw than intended" and more likely to fail (thankfully failures are OK with me here, oddly enough, because I got 2 of these clone 660's precisely for playing builder, so long as I always have 1 ready-to-go I still have what I need for work + parts-saw backup + increasing education&ability working the platform...nevermind that my 660's are stronger/faster like every 2wks, the big bores & 8pin upgrade this wkend should be pretty nice, including case porting ;D )

I understand exactly what you are saying. I have both the 460 and 440, as well as my favorite, my ms 360, especially if I will be cutting high stumps. I will buck with all three. The 360 has a 20 inch Total bar. The 440 has a 25 inch bar and the 460 has a 20 inch Stihl oilamatic bar. My 460 is just a little more powerful than my 440 but it is a lot heavier, as you said. The 440 actually needs couple dog, so you run the roller chain catcher, because the natural lay of the 440 is such that the end of a long bar is aimed to far downward. The roller catcher keeps it off a flat surface.

I love my ms 440, too. Primarily because of the weight difference better ween it and the 460. The 460 is also a beast for me to start. My two favorite big saws are my ms 360 and 440. They start easy and either has enough power to cut big oak, hickory or maple rounds. If I need to make a high face cut I grab the 360 in a heart beat because it weighs three pounds less than the 440. A low face cut is fine for the 440 but if I have to lift it up- it is a bit to much weight for me. 78 will do that to you - if you know what I mean! On a high cut my Stihl 024, 025 or ms 260P are not outside the realm of possibility, even when their shorter bars and .325 chains. As Clint has said - a man has to know his limitations.

Would be nice to hear Harvey do a review on this "new age" MS500i, how it cuts, etc. I have tested it myself here in Sweden mostly in pine and spruce, but have no comparison to his "hot rods".

How about 044 vs 045?

No mention of 044/046 Hybrid? I built one 460 P/C on a 440, giving best of both worlds, quick and snappy with more torque.

I probably own the world's only Stihl 036 built at the end of 90's (between 1996-1998)bought in 2001 that it is in mint condition untouched inside a box! Not the magnum versions, not the 036 pro, but the old plain 036 the series that made Stihl what it is in reputation .Stihl would probably put it in their museum, hahaha.Probably it will need all the seals and gaskets changed after all these years if it is going to be used!

I’ve got a nice 038 magnum 2 in at Walkers right now getting some exhaust work done. It complements my killer 066 that I have for the bigger stuff here in British Columbia.

So after 3-4 watchings (I get distracted doing background-watching yknow!), think I've taken it all in now but hoping you can correct me here where I stray!! SO...the 440 is great, but Stihl basically (no...LITERALLY) created a "big bore 440", which they call the 460. It's a 2mm larger bore, like the big-bore kits for ms660s being a 2mm larger bore as well, so I want to learn all I can Re how Stihl accommodated the 2mm larger bore here. You mention the frame was heavier on the 460- was it just generally beefier, all-around, pretty consistently? Or did you notice marked variation in HOW the frame/crankcase is laid-out? What about the crankcase//cylinder interface, I have to imagine that at-minimum they have a larger piston-cutout in the crnakcase on 460, than on a 440? What about other "ancillary/auxilliary" stuff, from the starter assembly to important stuff like cranks&bearings, the clutch assembly etc.....did they go and beef them all up, or does the 460 sport the same crankcase-internals, basically, as a 440? Thanks a ton for insight, will make a video ASAP I swear (well, *more*, I do have some) to show I'm not "an armchair guy" here, actually am building (2) side by side, actually they're already more-than built but I see them as a never-ending project, what could be more fun than continuing to push one of the most iconic platforms in powersaw history right?? ;D Thanks so much for all the videos, so great learning from someone who has that long-term experience (man I watched your BOCES class video like 4 or 5 times lol)
