In case ur wondering, Sting is clapping like that to increase the volume of each clap (not that it matters in a crowd of that size, but anyway.) Try it urself. If you clap with ur fingers spread apart and your palms flat and open like that, the decibel level of your clap is NOTICEABLY louder. It's akin to yelling Bravo! instead of just clapping. Gives it a little more oompf. Plain and simple.
Lady Gaga was scorching; Esperanza achingly emotive. Bruno killed it, but...Bruce. Oh my God. Powerful, gut wrenching. He turned Sting's song into his own.
Sting's original version uses some weird Hungarian alternating 4/5 rhythm. Bruce just took out the odd numbered beat to smooth it out. I think Sting actually started performing it that way on occasion as well.
Lady Gaga was AMAZING. The way Sting and his wife Trudy turn their faces and realise at the beginning of that performance that watching this woman perform one of his songs is going to be special💜
I am a Jamaican 🇯🇲. And we here on this island 🏝️ 🇯🇲 💕 love ❤️, love & appreciate Sting and his music 🎶🎶🎵 And he loves us too. Congratulations on your award Sting 👏🏽💐 very much deserve. . And you are still a buzz 🐝.😅. You rock 🕺🏾🎸. Rock on family🙏🏾🤗🥰💖
Ei ! Lindo ver Sting ser homenageado por estas feras da música ! Nós brasileiros o amamos por ele respeitar nossos povos indígenas! Viva Sting e Cacique Raony !❤
You don't really understand what impact Sting made on music until you hear these fantastic tributes. It all puts it into perspective and makes you really think about Sting's timeless career
Timeless talent that many do not give him enough credit. Brunos tribute is about how Sting influenced him and even John Mayer gives him credit while sitting in his room listening to King of pain. Thank you Sting. Thank you
The Boss just sung a Sting song, didn`t you know that all great people lean to the left? you sound a bit weird mate, and really not that special..lace your boots and bugger off!
Actually, if Herbie Hancock shows up for you it means even more. Herbie's played with the greats of jazz including Miles Davis. But Bruce is stellar here and really owns the song. And to be honest if you close your eyes it's like Bruno Mars is channelling Sting...awesome.
The Kennedy Center Honors have created some amazing, memorable individual performances, but I think as an overall package, this one was the strongest I've seen. From Gaga to Bruno, they all rocked it.
Sting has been through the worst. He is the best writer, so he wrote a movie to get rid of music block! He also began writing with Eric Clapton. Eric taught him about loss and Sting started Writing from inside. Every song teaches me something! Great comment!!! Sting is my favorite artist once he left The Police. Fragile we are.🎉
Have you watched the version at Sting's anniversary with Stevie Wonder playing harp? truly awesome. I think this song is so good that whoever sings it cannot be bad.
Wow!!! I Love Bruce Springsteen! 😍Himself an awardee and honored, seeing him performing and playing tribute was a remarkable gesture. Amazing and incredible artists!
It says everything you need to hear about your career when you have Lady Gaga, Esperanza Spalding, Herbie Hancock, Bruce Springsteen and Bruno Mars come out and play your tunes for you. Sting has crossed so any boundaries, a true connoisseur of the music of the world that the world itself has appreciated. A musicians musician. Despite all that, he can't clap for shit.
He may be clapping intentionally that way. That's the way they clap for example in Ethiopia, in Morocco, and in Spain (Flamenco). Probably some other countries as well. It is much louder and clearer if you hit it right. Important for the fast, intricate, and multi-layered clapping in their traditional misic. He's been studying world music so I'm sure he picked it up from somewhere.
18:37 Bruno is absolutely killing at this point in the song. I love how it transitions from a super-chill reggae feel and explodes to a rockin' ending with the choir!
Once again, EVERY performer NAILED IT... not only delivering a cover worth remembering but delivering a reinterpretation that is brilliant in its own right... HOLY CRAP! Herbie Hancock, Bruno, Lady Gaga, the BOSS bring tears of joy!
Esperanza Spalding's vocal performance (aside from the excellent instrumentation, of course) is unbelievably beautiful yet warmly sensual. Herbie Hancock's piano playing is like raindrops on a windowsill. Just an enchanting experience, even in the midst of some very strong performances.
After this performance I suddenly realized how great author Sting is, and how great performer Lady Gaga is. She should record a live album with all the Sting's songs.
One day I put Sting's songs on a CD and put in our family van. That's how my wife became a fan of him. Years later my daughter who is an young adult now told me that she raided my computer and downloaded all of my music collection. She told me of all the artist she loves and one of them is Sting. She treasures these songs as they remind her of all those good child memories when we traveled in our van and listen to and often sang-along to them. My daughter got good taste in music after all...
I remember dancing in my parents’ living room to Sting, back when I was still their only child, standing on my dad’s feet as we danced around the room. Now, as an adult, I can’t hear his songs without crying for the sweet nostalgia that they conjure within me. Your daughter will treasure the connection you share over his music for the rest of her life.
Absolutely! And while Sting has already toured with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Shaggy and Paul Simon, I cannot tell you how pumped I would be for him and Bruno to tour together. That 2013 Grammy performance they gave together was outstanding and gave everyone a taste of what it would be like. I for one would be front and center!
That was FANTASTIC. The best and the brightest were called in for this magnificent Tribute, which is apropos of Sting, who is among the best and brightest of 20th and 21st-century popular musical talents. How come I am just now seeing this nearly 10 years since this performance transpired? No matter: It was well worth the wait to see it now. 😀
@@bbdd2145 Wtf do you think "So lonely" is? if not a pop song? You want to hear someone "slaughter it"? Listen to Sting on the Police reunion tour. Bruno Mars gave it life like Sting did 40 years ago nd it's not that Sting was too old he just acted like he was doing everyone a favor by being there.
Only Sting can make such dreary topics sound upbeat and make listeners want to dance. I thank God every day for Sting's existence. Every little thing "he" does is magic.
I'm back - last time I loved Gaga, this time it was Bruce. You can't teach that kind of soul-searching. That's the Boss bringing his own life to Sting's music. Just awesome.
I'd be honored if some Sting fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal cover performances of WHY SHOULD I CRY FOR YOU and ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK on my YT channel in tribute to the master of lyricism and composition. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace.
OMG Bruno mars definitely stole the show for me!. Damn he actually sounded a bit like sting!. I was shocked. This man always sings from the heart and he is a genius musician as well. Love him.
Back in the early 1980s I was a dairy production manager at Associated Dairies in Newcastle. One morning I went across to the canteen for breakfast - probably about 7am (I didn't always have time) - the canteen was busy (long trestle tables) but there was unaccountably lots of room around three guys having their breakfast. I sat down opposite them with a smile and a "morning". I was well into my breakfast by the time I realised that one of them was Sting. It turned out he was back home and was out helping his dad who was a bottled milk buyer customer of the dairy the other chap was his brother.
Two of my favorite artists: past and present. Sting and Bruno Mars! From the day I arrived on campus and heard the Police's "Don't Stand So Close to Me" playing in Harvard Yard, I have been a Sting fan! Great tribute...especially by Bruno!
wow Esperanza have got such a voice!!! Amazing!! And her performance is brilliant, pure and magnificient!! Loved Bruno Mars performance, he makes everyone dance....
one of the best songwriters we have ever produced ,is lyrics are always so awesome and stunning he is a genius we brits should be very proud of him I know he is rich and can be pompous sometimes but he is great.
Bloody hell.... I thought i had seen the motherload..after the Led Zeppelin honors show.. Such incredible emotion.. Then... i saw this one.. Damn.. I'm speechless. Gaga gave it all.. the Boss brought such density.. incredible. B. Mars very solid.. through such a different styled medley. And man.. Esperanza Spalding just stole the show.. I mean.. such class.. grace.. and skill.. Such musicality .. and those Herbie Hancock harmonic fills.. They did what was truly difficult to do -> make those songs even greater. I feel priviliged .. to watch this. thank you!
How to play jazz piano: play like normal with loads of mistakes in quick succession and then pretend like you were supposed to play like that all along
I saw Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Sting at the same live performance in Torino Italy in 1988. I'm not a huge fan of Springsteen's but believe me that time he was way the best performer.
