Were you stationed at Camp lejeune in 98 99-2000? You look familiar I've been watching your shows for a while just thought I'd ask I was at courthouse Bay did my schools in Aberdeen proving grounds lav repair technician. Got injured ended up being the battalion commanders driver h&s company courthouse Bay until I med boarded out.. I was at building 1 a lot. So I was on main side quite a bit. You should do a story on Major general Wayne Rollins he's a true Marines Marine Navy cross recipient I think two silver stars and a bronze started out enlisted went to Vietnam came back then went back as an officer. After he retired from Camp lejeune he became commandant of Marine Corps college. His wife is actually my great grandmother's cousin he was my inspiration on why I joined... He doesn't get the recognition I think he deserves the story on how he received the Navy cross was amazing it's on Wikipedia.... Literally took out a whole platoon by himself with frag in his face and being shot five times.... Did all that and he's missing 2 fingers on his left hand before he was ever in the military..

Once a marine, always a marine, but you don't become a marine until you pass boot. That's when you earn the title. Lots of recruits never become marines. Because it's hard. No ill will to this guy. Don't know him. Maybe it wasn't his fault, but the fact of the matter is, he is not a marine. Aside from that, either way, he's still wrong on three points. One, he is not and never was a Sergeant. I was a Sergeant of Marines. I earned it. He didn't. By wearing that rank, he is lying, and marines shouldn't lie. Our core values are honor, courage, and commitment. He is violating his honor by being dishonest about his rank. He doesn't have a rank. He was a recruit. This goes to my point about him never having become a marine because the lowest rank is private, but he never even became that. In any case, he's violating his integrity by wearing those chevrons. Second, he should not be wearing cammies off base. Marines don't do that. Unlike other branches, we don't travel in utilities. That's why you always see marines in the airport in their service uniform (olive green trousers and coat, tan shirt and tie), not utilities. If you live off base, you are allowed to stop for gas in your cammies but that's it. Unless you are deployed, you don't go around town in utilities. So, even if he was a marine, this would be improper behavior. And third, by wearing that uniform, he is representing the Marine Corps, and his actions could be misinterpreted as sanctioned behavior. Unless you have permission from your commanding officer (and he doesn't have one), you should not be acting as a marine in public in a non-military capacity. If he wanted to do a good deed, he could have shown up in proper civilian attire. But what he really wanted was attention, and he violated the core tenants of marine values, discipline, and etiquette to gain it. So, no, I don't accept that his heart was in the right place because he did it the wrong way and in the wrong spirit. Stolen valor? Not really. Sad attention grabbing move? Absolutely. But as we real marines say, "Good initiative. Bad judgement." Oorah. Semper Fi

I guess people will do just about anything for that "Thank you for your service" comment. I remember growing up in the 1960s. My dad was a WWII combat veteran (like just about everybody's dad was during that era.) You know, I never heard him once mention he was a vet unless someone asked him. He never talked about the war much either. When I was in high school, some of the kid's families had taken trips to Europe. I wanted to see Europe too. I remember bugging him and my mom about it. One day he had enough and he said he didn't want to go to Europe again. I asked why, and he said "I don't want to see a bunch of bombed out buildings and a bunch of miserable starving people." (This was 1972). I finally got a hint of what my dad had gone through. He never really opened up until we saw "Saving Private Ryan" two years before he died. BTW, no one ever said "Thank you your service" to him. Side note: He spent 35 years servings the vets at the VA Hopital in Long Beach, CA.

We were all told as kids to never bring the war up, I attended every Remembrance Day Ceremony with him up until he passed, I always said, he was just another face in the crowd, he never wore his medals, he never stood by the other vets, he looked like just another person paying respects. I asked him once why he never wore his medals and he snapped, I don't need to wear medals to Remember! It took me many years of persistence to finally get him to open up and in 2005 I got to travel to Europe with him to tour where he fought, he did want to go because he wanted to see it as it was today and not as he seen it. He told me some stories over there, one town in Northern Holland he could not go into cause he said he had been there and he stormed away, he told me the story after I calmed him down and we stayed well away afterwards, the story was heartbreaking! He was 17 when he went over seas and it haunted him till the day he died. He once told me he didn't like to go into the Legions, he said they used to get a lot of guys in there that discussed their service or bragged, he told me anyone that ever seen any amount of active service doesn't brag or talk about it!

Some on medical hold, others are in Airborne hold waiting for a class slot to start. There are Drill Sergeants who supervise the troops. However from what I understood it was a rotational duty, in between training cycles. Pretty much they have the troops wake up, PT, SSS, chow then task them out for the rest of the day. Mostly cleaning and area beautification around Sand Hill. Still a controlled environment, otherwise you have recently graduated Joe going buck wild but generally a little more lax environment than infantry OSUT. Troops generally get a day pass on Saturdays to go on main post, catch a movie, bowl, hang out at the Airborne rec center (which had a decent video arcade, internet cafe and sold tobacco products.) Not too shabby for getting stuck waiting on a school slot, orders or biding the time while your dick gets un-broke.

It felt good providing peace of mind to the staff and students. I know it's not the same as the officers there but all the work we did and the equipment we installed made everyone feel that much safer I'm sure. Maybe this guy had good intentions, I'm sure a lot of it was attention seeking or looking for a pat on the back, definitely odd to pretend to be something you're not, but if it made people feel safe and didn't cause any hazard, than what's the big deal, other than potentially making the military look bad if he cowards during an actual event.

@@EyeForKnowledge. Correct he was in for 9 months. But he was in BOOT CAMP for 9 months. He had some sort of injury that prolonged his time in boot camp. It happens all the time and is the norm. I am a retired Navy Chief, did 24 years, 1997-2021. When i was in boot camp in Great Lakes back in 97, we had a guy who rolled into our division after like two and a half months of recovery due to a broken leg. My boot camp started in June, and he joined us starting in week three mid-june, cause that's when he suffered the injury (week three) back in early April. Pending on the severity of the injury/health issue, if you can heal and return to full duty, the military will keep you in boot camp until you do. Chances are this kid probably had a injury that wouldn't heal, they kept giving him time and chances, and it didn't work out. @@EyeForKnowledge. I don't think you understand, or maybe I am it saying wrong. Yes Marine boot camp is 13 weeks. HOWEVER, if a recruit suffers some sort of injury, they can be there longer than 13 weeks. For an example.........let's say you go to Marine Boot Camp first week of March, 13 weeks out, your graduation is second week of June. Let's say in week three of boot camp, you tear your MCL.............your training will stop right there and you will go into what's called LIMDU (Limited Duty) you are still in boot camp, but part not of the regular phase, basically your boot camp has been halted while you medically heal. Let's say it takes six weeks for you to recover and return to full duty so you can complete your boot camp. You won't return with your original recruits and company, they have moved on without you. What happens is you will fall in with a recruit company that is starting week three since that's when you got injured, and you will finish boot camp with them. So YOUR boot camp will be a total of 19 weeks. Original three weeks you did before injury Six week recovery. Final ten weeks of boot camp after recovery.................Totaling 19 weeks. Makes sense now?

Question; why can’t he stand there without the uniform? Not naked, but in civilian clothes. He’s just doing it to be a hero.

Being a marine myself. I will say they instill respecting higher ranks. You would get in major trouble for lying about yours. he was trying to do a good thing and I feel if he was honest it would of been a better story. Not sure if he got his EGA just pray he's ok

Funny how people say don’t judge a book by it’s cover yet the only difference between creepy and heroic for standing in front of a school all day is clothing.

This shows the problem with schools. The actual principal and teachers won't observe and research any at all. This kid should spend some time in jail to make an example and the principal should be fired instantly. If he can pull this bs, what's stopping someone with bad intentions of doing it? What if someone did this with the intent of winning trust to abduct a child or harm the school? If they want security then pay a little and go through a private security firm who first background checks all employees first and they have at minimum non lethal weapons.

I kinda feel bad for the kid. I see in his eyes he's lost or going through internal conflict of a kind, and if imitating heroes made him feel a bit more like a decent fella... It aint my place to say, I never served, but I'd give him a break. A case of "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". All due respect to those who serve.

In OSUT at Ft Benning, I met a guy in reception battalion. We spent 11-12 days in reception, start of Desert Storm. This guy complaining the entire time he has flat feet, should not be there. The time finally comes, we get loaded up in Cattle Cars, they take us to Garrison, this guy continues to complain. He is pretty much going to the Hospital everyday, or every other day, but it was a good thing. He did a lot of CQ and Fire watch for our Platoon. We finish Basic, get a 1 day pass, and start AIT, this guy is still in the barracks with us. He could have been sweeping, mopping, and buffing the floors, when we were training. Nope, he did squat. I have flat feet, I shouldn't be here. Graduation day, our last night, just a wake up and we are done. Drill Sergeant went into this guy hard. After everything, he says, if you just sucked it up, you would be out of here tomorrow, now you will be lucky to get out of here in 6 months.

Although the Staff Sargeant was a legit Marine why is he wearing the uniform after his service has ended? I believe that only a Medal of Honor recipient can wear the uniform after having served when ever they wish.
