For those who don’t understand this thin layer of silt will protect from leeches mosquitoes and in rays while allowing the skin to still breath. It also helps create an insulated barrier against the cold breeze

Because the peoples they usually don't censor live that way commonly in their culture. This is not common in our culture, and there fore is an anomaly. They aren't filming to learn something, they are filming him for views.

Lord McSwain It would at least protect you from the sun's rays in the summer and maybe be more effective against blood sucking insects than anything we wear ourselves. Plus, I bet there's more uses for that special type of mud.

This dude is nutty, but it technically would protect from the sun and absorbs more energy from the sun. Mosquitoes wouldn't bite and he'd be masking his scent better this way. It's probably not a good idea if you're running out of food because it would get cold as the water from the mud evaporates though.
