Breeding dogs deliberately to be healthy is something that is going on and I would classify as different to this. I would also categorise deliberately crossbreeding dogs for functional traits and personality. For example, I got my dog from a breeder that breeds her dogs as therapy dogs for hospitals, care homes and special needs schools
@paigehansen8944
@paigehansen8944 15 дней назад
Yeah, I got my dog from a breeder who buys & imports dogs from all over the world to try keep the genetic variance. They also breed the dogs for work, though most people adopting them intend to keep them as family members. Not as ethical as it could be still, and I don’t know if I’d do it again (though I love my little guy lots). I just like that they’re trying and actually thinking of the health & quality of life for the breed & the individual dog

@@paigehansen8944 I've gotten most of my dogs as rescues, but my latest one is a St Berdoodle I got from a breeder. I once spent a week couch-surfing with a friend who owned two purebred pugs. The noises those dogs made just BREATHING still haunt me. Their barking was as if somebody was strangling a squeaky toy. And the poor things were constantly getting sinus infections. The saddest part? Apparently, those pugs were considered "highly purebred" and cost him almost $10K. Just to burn tens of thousands on vet bills for the rest of their lives.

That point about the price makes me wonder, bc I have a pug (my mom chose the breed bc she'd never had a pug before) and she was only about $300 CDN and her breathing issues are very minimal - her snout isn't as flat as other pugs, you can only ever hear her snorting when she's in a deep sleep or begging for food, and her barking sounds like a normal small dog's. My mom got her for us as a Christmas present almost 11 years ago so I never got a chance to meet the family she came from, but from what I heard it sounds like they were ethical breeders, so there was probably less inbreeding (apparently there are only 50 original pugs in the entire world, so that's why I say "less" and not "no" lol).
@Baptized_in_Fire.
@Baptized_in_Fire. 13 дней назад
@@MarianahsTrenchGal1 good point. What I think it is, is perceived value. A set of people believe in the "purebred" nonsense and AKC practices. They'll pay tons for retarded dogs they think are valuable, so those breeders charge accordingly. All fools. Then there's the $300 puppy breeders. They're better, they're trying for a look, for cute puppies or whatever, and massive health issues aren't cute. Plus, they're not so brainwashed to believe inbred is good. They charge a more realistic price because they're more realistic people I presume. Not caught up in ideology so much. There is a third category though. Breeders who use very old techniques to create the best dogs. Guaranteed free of genetic disease, mentally stable, etc. They charge in between. They tend to train dogs also. Pups can be between a grand and 3 or 4 grand. A fully trained, stable, protection dog is a larger sum, ofc. That's just where it starts.

Even though I agree with most of your arguments, I will play devil's advocate here. 1. 'Dogs should be strong, free, and naturally selected.' I don't think that should always be the case; many breeds are known for having good health and a long lifespan (like Chihuahuas), and you don't want a strong and violent dog around kids. That's some of the reasons why humans made small and docile breeds. 2. 'Dogs are docile because they were bred to be stupid.' There are many docile breeds that are very smart (like Labradors). 3. 'Humans humiliate dogs by laughing at their failures.' That's a very human-centric view; from the dog's perspective, it doesn't feel 'humiliated' in most of those situations. Don't forget that even though dogs are very smart, humans are way smarter. Dogs simply aren't capable of comprehending those deep concepts and most likely feel happy at the human's playful voice tone, even when a human would 'feel humiliated' with the words being spoken. 4. 'We shouldn't breed dogs at all.' I strongly disagree. If we're responsible, we can create happy and healthy breeds that are adequate for diverse human needs, such as being small for people who live in apartments or being docile for people with kids. Most of these dogs can have great, happy lives and deserve to exist and reproduce. Additionally, it's important to consider that animals living in the wild often suffer more due to factors like disease, predation, and scarcity of resources. These are the points that I agree with you: 1. 'Humans humiliate dogs by treating them as babies.' I 100% agree that treating dogs like human babies is messed up. From the dog's point of view, it can be very annoying to be dressed in uncomfortable clothes and constantly hear screeching ape screams calling you cute without even giving you a treat. Many people are incapable of putting themselves in the dog's perspective and treat them as toys. 2. 'Some breeds are immoral.' True. Breeding for features that make the dog's life miserable, like needing surgery to give birth or having a deformed skull that causes shortness of breath and pain, is immoral and should be banned. 100%.
@CeeJayThe13th
@CeeJayThe13th 2 дня назад
Yeah I really don't get the whole being upset at "humiliating" a dog. I get that there's his underlying metaphor in here saying that *WE* are the dogs and the government (or something) are breeding us to be docile. But, a dog absolutely does not care what you say to it as long as you've got a good tone of voice. As long as it's fed and healthy and getting attention, they don't care. They're not scrolling through Instagram and getting hurt feelings because somebody called them a dummy for trying to run through a glass door and bumping their head. The implication that a dog could ever care what a human it will never interact with thinks about its antics is ludicrous. I mean that's just out there, man. As long as the dogs aren't being abused to get the fail videos, there's no reason for anyone to care.

A docile creature might not defend itself when it finds itself in danger however, despite what its instincts tell it.
@Raggedstar
@Raggedstar 13 дней назад
@@klappstuhl4370 Docility is definitely considered the more optimal choice, especially in today's society. If a dog considers another person or animal to be a threat (regardless if they actually are), they are more likely to be not bred, or at worst euthanized. Retrievers like Labradors are usually very docile dogs because they were bred against traits to eviscerate the game birds they retrieved. It's part of the reason they're so popular as pets and service animals, because their care is accessible, they're super trainable, and behaviorally most tend to love the world. It typically takes a lot to piss off a healthy, socialized Lab that isn't being actively attacked, and that's ok. No one gets a Lab with the intention of it being asked to defend themselves or their family. Even trained protection dogs need to be docile 99% of the time so they can act on that 1% of the time when they're actually needed and not be euthanized because they thought someone with a weird hat was a threat.

Firstly, if you want a pet, think of them as a small child because that's the level of care you'll need to give them. Secondly, adopt, don't shop. There are far too many pets that are in shelters and even more that are just killed or abandoned because there are no homes for them or people just decided that they don't want them any more. It’s not always successful. My father raised GSDs for the first 25 years of my like, and in the mid 90s he found about the eugenic background. So all future breeds were as hybridized as he could make. We tried the wolfdog route with only one successful coupling. But the best combo was Malamute/GSD mix. @AzraelThanatos
@AzraelThanatos 15 дней назад
With pitbulls, it's more of people not raising/training/socializing them properly since they tend to believe that they want the aggression, but then realize that they can't handle that and get rid of them. Several of the more "aggressive" breeds are very similar, where if you train them properly, they're protective but not dangerous at all, and it doesn't require a ton of work to do. The only dogs that seem to be standardly aggressive are some of the smaller dogs, chihuahua's being one of the major ones that are always in territorial attack mode unless there are other dogs there that are larger and get full of their shit
@jasonj4865
@jasonj4865 14 дней назад
@@AzraelThanatos the same type of people that raise aggressive mini breeds will raise a pitbull or any bully breed into a liability. Any dog that is treated in such a way that they think they're the boss becomes dangerous
@AzraelThanatos
@AzraelThanatos 14 дней назад
@@jasonj4865 Even a well trained Chihuahua tends to still be aggressive to anyone else there. My great aunt had a pair of them that would obey anything she or her husband wanted them, but would growl and snap at anyone else the moment their back was turned

there is an idiot on my neighborhood who walks his anxious dog every fucking morning, the little beast (the dog) barks like crazy, it looks like that guy keeps the dog locked inside his apartment or tied to the fence of his house. I personally prefer to live without a pet, I have no time or money to make it happy.

I have experiences in an animal clinic, Animal Rehabilitation, and at an animal shelter. 100% agree with your intro, adopt at a shelter and spay/neuter your animals! In animal rehab, you can really see how these show dogs end up, lots of terriers and poodles come in with luxating patellas(slipping knees), Shepherds with hip dysplasia, and SO MANY Dachshunds and Basset hounds with paralysis due to spinal problems. Also watch what your dogs eat goodness gracious 😂 So many overweight retrievers come in with severe arthritis and torn acl because they were too fat

Ngl, I kinda checked out of your videos a bit ago. Not because they're bad, but because they're somewhere outside of my interests, but this topic is important and I'm glad you're talking about it. We adopted our dogs, Wulfie definitely suffers from some aspects of previous breeding even though he's a mix. He has ear problems because of his floppy ears, and joint and skin problems. They're all minor issues, at least for right now, but it sucks that he has to deal with these issues as a result of human meddling, essentially.

Buying from responsible breeders is very different from puppy mills. Breeder i got both my dogs from has reduced hip displasia and eye illness to below 1% (huge achievement for australian shepherds). Still adopting from shelters is a great option, especially if you cannot afford the significant price that comes with responcible breeding.

On a side tangent, this is also what pisses me off when breeds get banned for being "aggressive". Because certain breeds are popular to use for fighting rings, they get bad raps, and even if you can argue a breed has "aggression", then it's on us for choosing those traits to continue on. But it is ALWAYS the dogs that get blamed and banned. Hard to find an apartment that will allow a Rottweiler, but breeders don't get restrictions at all. Just disgusts me to the point where I angry cry. Life truly is unfair.

There is at least 3 "people" in my neighborhood that "breed" more than a dozen dogs at the same time! Sounds like 3 different kennels when somebody walks down the street 3 blocks over. I know because I hear them all the time! And how many do you want to bet are up to code? or even basic decent standards? I hope this video has the impact we all secretly hope it does! Bravo!

Says a lot about "our" need for status symbols...and concern with purity I wonder where that comes from Ego, survival (social hierarchy) Cross effect from paternity (men) probably a mixture of all the above and more....from what i remember of Graham Handcocks work the missing Civilization had a cultural that actively fought against negative vices/inherited traits..if it did exist it needs to come back if not...we need to create it. ✌️

Bro, I have a whippet mix, sure only 50% whippet. She has killed a dove on my balcony, she hunted a hen one time as well, and god knows what else when I wasn't looking. She even managed to corner a hare once but let it go once she caught up with it. Doesn't take much to make them fierce hunters again.. =)

i work with dogs and i always hate having to take care of the ones that have smashed faces. yeah theyre cute and all but theyre impossible to train because the only thing they can focus on is getting air into their face. its mitigated by the fact most of them are small and weak but they are almost incapable of learning even the most basic things but that also makes them really prone to getting into trouble because they couldnt learn that some stuff is a bad idea

As someone who has had two litters of Australian shepherds (really it's a cross between three pro dominant breeds) id say yes get your dog from a shelter but imagine a world where dogs aren't in a shelter and are properly priced to reflect the care required to accurately give that breed it's needs. Ultimately if people want a specific breed mix rather than purebred then that's what breeders will provide. Unless they breed for livestock purposes. If the breeder is doing it right. They aren't making money.
