I have a deaf dog that doesn’t pull. A good retractable lead is very useful for communicating with him during walks because there is always tension on the line. A quick tap on the line lock, and my dog will turn to me looking for a hand sign. These leads are tools, and like any tool, they have risks when used improperly.

Agreed! Flexileads are great if you're dog is well trained and you're aware of your surroundings and know what you're doing.Problem is too many people don't know how to train their dogs and aren't paying attention to their surroundings. You can even use them to train the come command, sit and down command while walking. And I have a noose connecting my wrist to the handle so it can't come off my wrist.

Agreed. I love this dog trainer, but not all of those leashes are made the same. I got a Kong version and its a lot heavy duty and more like a rope and is perfect for my boy when I like to walk him by the river and let him jump in while I stand on the side while I'm in a on leash park.

@@yalman32 Absolutely true. The consistent and slight tension on the line is a good stimulous to the dog in which direction to go as well. I wouldn't use it on a very high energy, aggressive, or flight risk dog but for standard cases or young puppies, no problem from me.

@leaelzebub811 Год назад
Walk my big lab/rottie/pit mix on a big sturdy one of those. It enables you to easily train the loose leash. Tension and a little snatch if she goes to far without permission or some way I don't want her to go. Looseness when she's doing what she's supposed to. When I say "okay explore" she can immediately get further away and bounce around, expending more energy and doing nose work. When I shush her she slows down and let's me catch up. When I shush and say "heel" she goes back to walking right by my leg. It. Was. Not. Easy. To. Train. She is still only 6 months so it's not perfect yet, but if you do the work, these leashes allow more freedom for you and your dog. This way I can let her wander in the country side but still have the ability to pull her back if I need to. I love it. Lets her play but keeps her safe.

As an Army MWD handler, Flexi leads are awesome. And they hold up well to our K9's as long as you know how to use them. They are not "garbage" but rather take more skill to use than they are advertised. The average person walking their pet should practice the mechanics of a flexi before using it on a powerful dog.

Flexi leashes are great for an off leash trained dog, or an acreage. The misunderstanding I think people have is why these are pretty terrible for urban walking in crowded areas. You can’t reel it in like a normal leash so control is limited. If you have an acre of land and just one dog these are fine.

If your dog is trained, it shouldn't be breaking a Flexi... I use large dog Flexi leashes on my 25 lb. terriers... I like letting them roam on leash... One command, and their at heel... Walking them on long, non retractable leads would drag the leads through loads of dog crap from owners that don't pick up after their dogs... When I walk my dogs it's for their enjoyment... to break up the monotony of their day, and for exercise... not a tool to follow me around, totally focused on me, waiting for a bit of praise or a treat reward...

Unpopular opinion here then I guess. I like the flexibility of the flexi lead. It has a brake and you can pop it at any length. It automatically stays up and out of the wet but allows my dog the freedom of being off leash while keeping the leash Karens happy. The webbing is extremely strong and durable as is the locking mechanism. He can be a dog and do dog things and I can walk with minimal interruption.

They're sitting around collecting dust meanwhile I use my flexi leash with a flat collar daily! I never thought I would see the day that I'd be saying this! But I'll never go back!

Yeah you have to be careful with them. And yes it's going to be super unsafe if your dog isn't trained. But they're really handy when your dog is off leash trained but you're in a city that doesn't allow off leash dogs. If my dog gets tangled I tell him to stay- and he does. If I see another dog I recall him into a heel. When I was a little kid a dog on a flexi lead ran in front of and got tangled up with my stroller. It left a gash across my throat. So yeah, I'd never ever use a flexi lead on a dog liable to bolt or one that isn't leash trained.

In my opinion they are fine for most small dogs as long as the dog has decent training. We used one for my chihuahua growing up and one advantage of the flexi lead is you can give them audio/physical commands without much effort. If you slightly hold the lock down but still let the line go, you get a clicking noise that the dog will recognize as a warning to slow down and if they keep pulling you can tighten it all the way and stop. Anything over 15-20 pounds I’d wouldn’t use them.

Your dog clearly doesn't respect you or your authority then. He respects the tug of the leash, that's it. Probably because he wants to run and you won't let him. Do you know how they used to train elephants? Like in India and whatnot back in the day? They get em while they're young, strap chains to one of their feet, and tie them to a huge pole. The baby elephant will almost die trying to escape. After a few rounds of that and once the elephant is an adult, they tie a thin piece of string around their leg and tie the other end to a small steak, like for camping. This gives the elephant memories of the chain and post, and it has no hope for escaping, so it doesn't. When really, it can terrorize and demolish everything around it if it had the right mindset. A gunfire shot, a fire, a spook, ruins this entire plan and completely backfires once the elephant actually gets loose. Very dangerous to train this way. Hopefully nothing spooks your dog while he happens to not have a leash on; for his sake and others. Because he only listens to the leash, not you.

She got very nasty n rude that we didn't just stand still so her dog could, (potentially), hurt them. She said that we didn't know what we were doing n that lifting the little ones up n out of the way was the cause of her dog's barking n getting more aggressive. Mind blown! 🤯

I 100% agree! Why use a leash that gives you zero control on your dog? Defeats the purpose of a leash. Unless the dog is well trained and can heel like a champ, which is not most dogs.

With the ban on American Bully XL's in the UK I can tell you that an untrained dog is a complete liability on a flexi lead no matter where you are. I walk my boy in the fields with a flexi and when I recall or he reaches the full extent of the lead he come back to me EVERY SINGLE TIME! It is my responsibility to be vigilant of other dogs, foxes etc However, I wouldn't use a flexi to walk to the shops or congested areas. With the exception of the prong and half check collars from Martingale ALL his other collars and leads come from Bully Billow and I use the tactical combat selection.

My wife and I have been using these for 31 years now and other than getting lassoed by them if we see a dog we know we never had any problems. If we see a strange dog coming we retract the leash and tell our dogs to heel. Sometimes I lock the leash and sometimes I don’t, just trying to find out if my dig is really listening. I will say the quality of the leash has dropped off quite a bit over the years.

I don't why these are a thing, they've been around forever, the locking part always breaks, and gods forbid if your dog chews through it, I've people almost lose fingers cause the lock breaks and wrap it their hand(don't ask why). If people want a longer lead they can always buy the training leads and make handles by tying the lead so you have intervals of length, I've done it this way for over twenty years, it may not conventional but it works well. The other thing you could get is a horse lead, it's what I use with my dogs after I had three clips break and they were weighted for dogs bigger then mine, the leads about 50lbs more then what my dogs weigh, not sure if it's the construction or what.

I think they’re good for older small dogs. Something you can let out and give them some space but know they’re too old and too small to break. So yeah I would trust it but not on just any dog.

I wouldn't recommend them either, mostly the ones that the line is like a cord, once my dog caught me off guard and tried to go after a another dog that was far enough, and I tried to stop her, and I couldn't push the lock button so (stupidly) I tried to stop her by grabbing the leash, and not only I couldn't stop her with the leash, but also I almost chop off my whole finger, the cord is so thing and when the dog runs off the cord goes so fast that can cut thru flesh and bone, I was quick enough to let the cord go, so it only cut part of the flesh of my finger (I needed stitches) but it also kinda burn the part of the flesh from the friction, I know it was dumb from me to grab the leash by the cord, but in those moments of quick events you don't have to much time to think, and also it was my first couple of days with this leash I never had one like this before. So bottom line, this type of leash, especially the one with a thin cord, can cause a lot of damage, this time was my finger, imagine that same scenario but this time the cord actually tangled with something like your hand or your dog or another dog, literally it can kill it or chop off his paw or something. As a regular user, please don't use it, it may have its specific applications but for and your dog's safety, stick with a traditional leash.

If you are able to leash train your dog, and actually pay attention to your dog while walking a "flexi leash" (really a retractable leash) is a great tool. Sure, the average person using one are completely clueless but they are not 'absolute garbage'. No way I'm going to deal with the hassle of a static leash longer than 6 feet unless I'm actively training a dog, the retractable leash keeps the line out of the dog's feet and neatly stores it when you need the dog close. The quality leashes have no trouble holding back a 200lbs dog if you have a correctly sized leash.

Flexi leashes are not made for a man's hand! Few years ago, I accidentally dropped a flexi when walking my Puggle puppy. When I dropped it,it began retracting towards the dog! She took off running,scared of that mean old leash coming after her! I, in turn, started running after the Puggle. The shorts I was wearing were fine for walking, but not for running! They fell down,and tripped me up! I broke my elbow,and needed a elbow replacement! That was last time I used a flexi!!

These are horrible! My neighbor's dog was on one of these and ran full speed towards my dog. The leash wrapped around my ankle and the rope burn that I got from this bacterial breeding ground POS, was unreal. It was so bad that it was a deep 2nd degree burn with cellulitis within 12 hours. I use a flexible lead on my pitbull. She’s fully trained off and on lead and it lets me walk her / give her space to smell and walk around without getting a ticket for having my dog off lead in the city. I get what you’re saying about untrained dogs, but that shit is great for me. I wouldn’t take it on every walk I go on, but I do use it often.

Hi, a few questions regarding my Boston terrier. Her name is pebbles. I noticed that when I walk her on her front leading leash, it stops her from pulling , but it makes her walk at an angle which I feel is causing a misalignment in her spine. When I attach her leash to the back of her harness, she no longer walks at An angle but she pulls. I spoke to a dog walker and she said she’s a terrier, and terriers are meant to pull. Her pulling truthfully doesn’t bother me, but I read that that teaches them that they are the boss ,not you. Also- are collars Nessecary? She’s never worn one before, but I want to get one so she has her tags on her at all times, and I do attach an AirTag to her harness because she has gotten loose before, so I would like to attach that to her collar. I would not walk her with a collar, but would it be cruel to put her in a collar after never having her wear one for so long?

My 9 yr old Chow Shepard Mix had to stay with my mom for awhile, and she used this to take him out. After 3 months he was totally spoiled by it. It took a couple weeks of using his regular leash and harness to retrain him to walk nice, but wow does he love his grandma! He's slow, and didn't pull her or anything, but got used to just wandering wherever he wanted! He's back to normal now!

I’ve used all leashes and they’re the most inconvenient leash. There’s no point to them either since when walking the locks on most of the time since why would you have your dog 40 ft away from you? Also un trains your dog to pay attention to you while walking
@cowbless

Lol this type of dog leash has held up for ages for our family. Dog fights and all. Now if your dog is a huge uncontrollable wild beast -that's a different story, but I'd argue that you don't want that outside on any sort of leash. Not even gonna talk about how the person has to be as strong as the dog at least to control them, which is not what some people consider when buying pitbulls and other breeds. That's what needs a license, not freaking flexi leashes. You can either have a spool with the leash in your hand, or let your hands or yourself be the spool for the extra leash.

It was at this time that I got the ecollar lmao I only have a 55 lb dog and the SAME thing happened! Nothing would pull him out of that fear aggression state except for the ecollar. I could strangle him and he'd only want to bolt more. With the ecollar, he'll recall 100% of the time, can sit/lay stay with me being out of site or far away, his focus is entirely on ME and MY commands as it should be. He knows he'll be safe if he listens, so he listens.

Disagree. I got one for my puppy to help him have more freedom to explore and to teach him recall as well. It's difficult to teach recall outside when you live in apartments and other leashes are too short.
