I remember hearing at the time of TPM how Jar Jar and the Nemoidans and Watto were received as insensitive or racist caricatures of ethnic groups (Jamaicans, Japanese, and Italians, respectively) so the change makes sense to me. Honestly ngl I didn’t even notice until prequel fans complained about it

Ahsoka has an American accent while other togruta like shaak ti have more latino sounding one. Hera syndulla eventually loses her french accent.

These writers don’t care. We took Star Wars from those with passion and gave it to those who want nothing more than a paycheck.

They sound more similar to Lott Dot in the Clone Wars. With a little less of a Japanese accent. (Which I can imagine they wanted to ditch because there were A LOT of complaints about them being racist caricatures in the Phantom Menace) It makes sense that not all Neimoidians have the same accent because you don't sound like every Australian I know either. And now we're speaking off accent differences within 1 country. Neimoidians lived on multiple planets. I can imagine that they might have a wide variety of accents.

I think they changed the voices because when the phantom menace came out, George Lucas was accused of being racist and that their voices were of a racist stereotype. So obviously, the show runners wanted to avoid that.

Tbh I didn't find it that different, just a little less strong. I also don't think we can use this single crew as parameter for the whole species. Besides in TCW their accent was already a little bit less accentuaded than in the movies. I ain't no native speaker tho, so that's just my 2 cents as an outsider

Languages and accents evolve, English was completely different 100 years ago, it makes sense that Neimoidians spoke differently 100 years before.

We have a million different accents on Earth, a single planet. It would be odd if an entire alien race shared the same accent.

Of all the problems in that terrible show, this isn’t one of them. In AOTC, Gilramos Libkath does not have the accent and Mar Tuuk in clone wars did not have the accent either.

Among Jar-Jar and other aliens, the Neimodians were accused of having stereotypical accents. At the time I didn’t mind and I still don’t. However touchy fans do and Disney knows that, so changed it.

Are we seriously complaining about this? They may have grown up off nemoidia or it may just take place 100 years sooner and they had different accents back then. For a franchise about transporting you to another galaxy it's wild how little we can just suspend disbelief for this

Ehhh idk Pretty sure they still sound like Nemodians to me. Example being we have heard them sound like this in TCW Season 1 Mar Tuuk. There still sniveling cowards and I think that’s portrayed fine here. Now before there’s a flame war. Of all the problems going on with this show, i dont think this is a majour one. Like hell, greedo's species is sometimes speaking a native language we cant understand then some of them sound like Americans with no accent at all, and this was back in the clone wars. Its not like star wars has always been really strict with their species accents in the past so your really grasping for straws here if this is your problem

I’m not crazy about this show but listening to prequel fans right now is very reminiscent of us OT kids who were so incredibly disappointed with TPM.

I guess someone in the PC department felt it sounded too close to a stereotype mocking East-Asian accent or something. People are reading too much into stuff and are afraid of upsetting people, ending up upsetting fans instead by making such changes. As for a lore explanation, I guess the ones from The Phantom Menace were highborn and these guys are lowborn? Similar to how haughty Imperials have a British English accent vs others have an American English accent. I can imagine how many headaches the lore department must have trying to justify all these changes with lore explanations to make it work.

It’s toned down but there is still a hint of an accent there. I mean, it has been 100 years, that’s plenty of time for an accent to evolve, or maybe Nute Gunraay's is a more upper class version of the accent. The real critique in this scene is how his lips don’t quite synch with what he's saying….. although it more well done than in the Phantom Menace.
