My son had trigger thumbs as a baby. He took great joy in bending and locking his thumbs just so we could pop them loose again. This sent him into fits of laughter. He had surgery on them as a toddler which left him very disappointed when his thumbs would no longer lock.
I use several layers of Bandade brand water repellant tape. There is just enough to stop triggering. After two weeks I tried triggering once and it went fairly smoothly and no pain. And the swelling is gone. I'll keep using tape for another six weeks.
This army vet learned a solution. I don't shot guns. I grew up and got guns out of my system carrying a rifle 24/7. I saw what a ghetto conservative rural America has become. I don't live in one of these ghettos. The states with the highest total rates of gun-related deaths - counting murders, suicides and all other categories tracked by the CDC - included Mississippi (33.9 per 100,000 people), Louisiana (29.1), New Mexico (27.8), Alabama (26.4) and Wyoming (26.1). The states with the lowest total rates included Massachusetts (3.4), Hawaii (4.8), New Jersey (5.2), New York (5.4) and Rhode Island (5.6). Stay out of conservative hellholes!
I use clear Scotch tape. I put it on sticky-side up, and then put another strip of tape over it, stick-side down. It's more comfortable that way and barely noticeable.
I came back to say that I am amazed that there is virtually no pain in my thumb this morning! After watching your video, I wrapped the joint of my thumb in medical tape before I went to bed. Now this morning, moving my thumb gives no pain. 😀 I can even gently squeeze the base of my thumb and no pain! Before, it was so painful when I did that. I unscrewed a bottle cap without pain. Glad I watched this video because I would have never thought this would help. I would have thought that restricting the thumb from flexing down when it wanted to would make it worse and cause more pain. I am a senior and began to have problems with my thumb about a month ago. My mom had operations for trigger finger on her 2 middle fingers. Thanks for sharing this technique. ❤️
Oh my gosh! My trigger thumb started suddenly about 5 weeks ago. It became so bad that I could barely bend my thumb, and when I did try and bend it the pain was really bad. I did make an appointment with a hand specialist this morning. Then I found this video. I applied one band-aid, my pain was instantly gone, and I can now partially bend my finger. Yes: it still pops a tiny bit, but nothing like it was before. Again, oh my gosh! I am going to get a confirmation from the hand doctor that it is trigger thumb. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You mentioned something about a "hand therapist." So I did a search and found a group of hand therapists close to me! I will give them a call.
THANK YOU for this simple fix! RE: keeping the Band-Aid dry: Cut off a finger from a Latex or thin RUBBER EXAM GLOVES. Pick a GLOVE FINGER that will hold tightly to your Band-Aid wrapped finger without space. (I use the PINKY or RING FINGER to cover the Band-Aid to keep it from getting wet.)
Use those crinkly wraps that most clinics use for wrapping the site of a blood draw. They stick to themselves without adhesive. Cut a 3/4 " wide strip about 3" long and wrap around the finger. Then a piece of 3/4" paper tape a couple times around. Easily lasts 3-4 days with no skin irritation. Used on the two finger sections. Works great. Qlso do some of the massaging of the tendon from the finger toward center if the palm. Huge difference in 7-10 days now. Thanks for info!!
I think you are referring to Coban? Just be careful bc that is a very stretchy type of wrap and your finger can swell. But I am happy to hear you are finding a way to help your trigger finger!
I make my own permanent support. I use a hardish plastic strip and make a ring then I use the finger of my glove to wrap around the plastic. I sometimes sew the glove finger on. I make sure it is lose enough not to cut circulation and tight enough to stay on. Works great for me. This is good idea but I can't wear bandaids.
After 3 operations, other fingers started acting up, and I decided not to go through any more procedures. And after months I discovered something that no doctor had ever told me - - this condition goes away BY ITSELF with time, like any other infection. 🙄
I came down with trigger thumb on my right hand after I just woke up with it one day around a year ago, very painful. I even went to a hand doctor and got a couple steroid shot in the joint and it really didn't help much. So I did some research and found out that this could be caused by a B6 deficiency and read that taking P-5-P, 50mg 3-times a day along with a magnesium supplement to help with absorption would heal my trigger thumb. I also read that you have to take it a minimum of 6 months for the healing to take place. Well, after 6 months and 2 weeks I noticed my trigger thumb getting a lot better almost over night, It's now getting better everyday and I don't have to splint my thumb at all and I can bend my thumb without triggering it and basically the pain has gone away and my mobility is returning more every day. I had an appointment with the hand doctor at the end of next month for another steroid shot and now I going to cancel, don't need it. The doctor didn't believe in P-5-P as a treatment but I proved him wrong! Your video's helped m e through a lot, thank you
Having worked through trigger thumb for the last 2 months, let me say this: a band-aid is UNSUFFICIENT to lock the joint into place. Two bandaids doesn't do it either. What does do it is some medical tape wrapped several times around the finger/joint, and that approach is much less intrusive than that triangular device she suggests putting on the finger. My $0.02. ps: for me, it's now at about 10 weeks since it started, and it's much better...but definitely still not fully healed. It takes a LONG time.
Hi. I had trigger finger in both my thumbs. Did some physio exercises. And yes it worked. But it took a very long time. Especially the 1 thumb. It got worse before it got better. But was glad I kept up with my little exercises. Never heard of this tape thing before. I may try it on my middle finger! Exercises don't seem to work on the finger. Fix one problem another pops up! Take it easy.
Good day to you, I am 67 and had a cortisone injection for my little finger 2 months ago. It didn't make a sound before, it just got stuck and I had to manually open it with the other hand Now after the injection it's doing both. Should I do the band aid on it. Could it work after years of this problem or should I go for the surgery. Many thanks, bless you for helping.
I use athletic tape, then put a band-aid over it. It usually lasts a couple of days. My trigger finger affects my left ring finger. I got it from playing the guitar several hours per day. The tape + band-aid prevents locking but doesn't do anything to relieve the underlying condition. I have to be careful when I use that finger when playing - too much pressure can be super painful.
I played the guitar for hours every day too in my early days, not so much these days. I have always wondered what could have caused this condition, for some reason I never considered it being the guitar. Makes total sense, since it's only my right ring and little finger I have problems with. Thanks for your comment.
Can't wear any kind of Band-Aid solution day and night for more than a couple of days before skin is in full rebellion due to lack of proper oxygen and/or something sticking to it nonstop. Nice idea but impractical to do for weeks at a time. Yes, I need it at night as I will wake up with the finger LOCKED and PAINFUL, so bad I have to use my other hand to release the finger. Changing often doesn't help - still endless sticking causes irritation. I also have a lot of hair on back of fingers so OUCH taking that off all the time! Okay, RU-vid - next solution?
I just found this series of your videos on trigger finger, thank you so much! I realized after watching this about the band aids that I have some little stretchy toe cushion tubs. I put one on my bad finger over night, and it hasn't triggered again today.
I found you this morning. Are you an Angel from Heaven? I was asking my wife if "I amputated my middle finger would the pain stop"? She didn't like that question lol. Now I have found hope in your videos.
I use kinesio tape with micropore over it for my thumb, but I do find my skin gets irritated eventually. That's why I don't use bandaid/elastoplast, because the adhesive is much more irritating.
I have trigger finger, both middle fingers. I found using using ace bandage wrapped one turn around the finger really works great. I use ,I think it's the 2" size.
I saw my surgeon after wrist surgery. I am having numbness in my hand. He thinks It is carpal tunnel are there any exercises for this. I follow your channel and have been doing your exercises for months. .
Thanks Michelle . It's working on thumb. Amazing difference. Thumb wasn't locked but was headin that way I'd say. Great relief. Thanks again Kevin from Ireland.
Hi Kevin. I found this video today and it’s been a great relief. I’ve got a trigger thumb and it’s really sore when it clicks. Is this what you have too ? Have you tried any of the stretching exercises or what are your plans to do next to stop it getting worse. I work with sick cats and I hate to have to give it up because of this condition
@@marionscanlon1 hi Marion. I got 2 cortisone shots but whilst it's improved enormously, as in no real pain in base of thumb, I still can't bend it freely. So there might be an MRI scan next. My 2nd cortisone shot appointment was free as no consultation fee was needed..
I use a finger cot with two bandaids on my ring finger and it works great to keep bandaids dry through out the day. Doing, this while waiting for my figure eight braces to arrive.
@@VirtualHandCare I just put the bandages on my finger yesterday and the pain went away right away and the trigger feel less. Amazing how a little bandage can improve the mobility of my finger. Thank God he put you on my way. i was thinking to go for an injection or surgery. i worry to I have to leave my job. Hope this help me. I will let you know after 7 days. Thanks for sharing your video. You're amazing. GBY
@@dandyd14441 It help me a lot but i the trigger is bad. i just had 2 injections. i have 2 trigger fingers. I feel i going to need another one. Thanks for reply back
I've been using 3M Micropore 1530 tape on my trigger finger. Nice things about this tape is that it breaths and doesn't irritate the skin and you can leave it on for up to 7 days, according to 3M. Also it's impervious to water.
I just had surgery on my trigger thumb, best thing ever. Before the surgery it was extremely painful as my thumb would lock up and I had to put it back in with my other hand. This band aide thing didn’t work.
I'm going to try - one on right ring finger and one on the left hand index finger! Being ambidextrous doesn't help when both hands are involved. I'll let you know how the band0aid works on one or both fingers.
It will help, but you'll spend a small fortune in Band-Aids. 🤣😂 I have so many triggering fingers and two of them have had surgery. Even surgery doesn't prevent triggering from coming back. I would opt for finger splints that I can take off when I get my hands wet and wear overnight to take off in the morning. I found that buddy-taping my index and second finger together helps with my index finger a lot with inflammation. I think that is actually from the tendon that runs thru the side of my finger (I can't explain it, but I have pain on the side of my finger). Fingers are some difficult critters to control!! 😂
Here's a tip: Nexcare Clear Waterproof Bandages work very well! They will stay on for hours. I wish I would have thought of this Band-Aid trick! Thank you!
Wow, I didn't know this was a thing. My thumbs have been popping at the knuckle for about 25 years, no pain, just popping. Never knew it could be corrected as it really doesn't bother me because it's part of my life. Who knew? 😵💫
THANK YOU SO MUCH! My finger was stuck on a bend and i managed to slowly pop it back with warm water baths i was scared cuz this was the first time my finger got stuck for more than an hour, so i was looking for ways to keep it from bending too much. The other videos need me to buy something and i ordered some online so i needed a temporary one until those arive and i ended up seeing this video you are a god send thank you again
Sorry but didn’t work for my thumb, after weeks of searching for a splint finally I’ve found one at Walgreens made of aluminum and keeps the finger strait.
This seems like an interesting technique but it also seems to target the CMC joint rather than the MCP. Better to make it explicit what you are targeting to prevent misunderstanding. I came here looking for treatments for MCP joint trigger finger
Thank you for your vidio I had surgery on my thumb 3 week still sore can't still bend my thumb yet until it heal how long it take for my thumb to bend please tex me
You need to use a sound absorbing curtain or board off camera to modify the sound on your videos. Experiment a little to bring the sound in closer and not bounce off the hard surfaces in your studio.
I tried the bandaid trick but after a few days I got dermatitis from the adhesive. So now I cut a 4x4 bandage into 1” strips (use 1 at a time) and attache 5” of 1” durapore tape (looks like fabric and doesnt stretch) and wrap this whole unit around the bottom of my finger and it works great. I can get it wet when I wash my hands (use a paper towel to dry it off), it conforms great to my finger, can do all sorts of work without triggering. Wearing a glove on that hand when washing up keeps the bandage from getting wet and makes it last longer.
I developed sore stiff hands in January with triggering on the right ring finger. Recently I realised that the cause was my inside door handles which curve upwards at the end with the point hitting my palm under the rf for over ten years. And the handle springs are way too strong. Lousy design Oakley. Another coincidence is that when I lift a mug the weight is resting on my ring finger. A couple of weeks ago I taped up the doors so I could open them push pull with no downward pressure and the condition has now improved significantly. To prevent triggering I wanted to make a ring which I could remove to wash my hands. In the end I settled on Cling Film. I got the idea from a scone wrapped in CF. I take a piece about 18 ×12 inches and fold it lengthwise into a cigar shape about 2cm wide. I wrap it around my left index finger making it neither too loose or tight. Loose is better than tight. I attach a piece of sellotape to secure the first turn to help stop it unravelling from the inside. I secure the end flap with a narrow piece of sellotape/scotchtape. It's soft and malleable but strong enough to hold its shape, for a day or two anyway. The inside gets sticky in the heat so perhaps a little powder or oil will help with that. It's still a work in progress. I wear it mostly in bed where the triggering is worst. I'm wearing it now as I type. I wear a garden glove (firm rubber palm cloth back) for household chores and cycling. Another kind of ring for rrf which has proved useful is white elastic. The length is double circumference rrf, width is lower section rrf. It's loose enough to twirl around the finger and the construct is stretchy and easily adjustable. I put double-sided sticky tape (don't use best scissors to cut dsst) along the first half and finished with white pvc tape around half the outside.
his is what I've been doing and it helps! I use Band-Aid tough strips1 3/4 X 4". It works like soft splint. I had an injection several months ago and the pain has come back.
A rheumatologist suggested the "buddy system" of taping trigger finger to its adjacent finger. Also massage and 100 mg hyaluronic acid daily reduced locking. Surgical paper tape from the Dollar Tree is cheap and easily removed.
I have trigger finger, and my GP will be scheduling an xray. I bought a thumb splint from Amazon. I've added a popsicle stick into the wrap for further immobilization. It's helped me, a lot.
What if you were Born with trigger thumb? It's both joints in my thumb that trigger, and it's been present for as long as I can remember. I stopped triggering when I learned it was actually harmful to me, but I had done a good amount of "party tricks" with my trigger thumb before learning that tidbit. Oops!
Wow amazing hint!! Thank you! This morning I just started wearing four bandaids on my right fourth and fifth fingers (four bandaids on each crease) for few days trial if it works or not. I will let you know. 😊
I just tried it now and as soon as I wrap the band aid around my triggered finger I can feel right away that it work. I have a surgery schedule but if the pain is gone I will cancel my surgery. Thank you that I found your channel. 5:42 5:42
I had trigger finger that was stuck or frozen wouldn’t release! It made me so mad, I just yanked it straight & voilà it released & haven’t had any issues since then! After 2 weeks it was definitely a win!
