Clay. You are the man!!! I am a high single digit handicapper but have had the chipping yips on and off now for 4-5 years. I have tried everything to fix. Some would work for a short time; then I'd be back to topping, blading or chunking. I once again went online and saw this video; went to the practice green with an 8 iron and a gap wedge....and after 1 hour focusing on the ball position and hip turn you mention, had them consistently in a 5 foot circle from 50-60 feet and "kick-ins" from 20-30. Even the ones I missed a bit because I "peeked" turned out ok. I'm ponce again excited about my game. Thanks

Another great lesson. Simple but really effective. Of all the Pro's on the web Clay is one of the best.

Clay great video. Question on alignment. are you slightly open to your target or square?

Hi, it's personal preference but I like to set up a little open when chipping and for short pitches. This helps me get the body and club through together and also helps me see the line of the shot. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Great video. Two comments: 1) I think that it also helps to focus on maintaining a constant, fairly light grip pressure (e.g. 3 out of 10), as my yips come from tightening grip pressure on the forward swing. 2) I live in the UK where the lie is often very wet and the club does not glide very well even when using the bounce. Any tips avoiding fat shots?

Thanks John! I would make sure to play the ball about the middle of your stance and come in very shallow so that the club brushes the turf. Best of luck! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hi there , you say to turn your left hip through the shot , does that mean you turn your right hip through the back swing?

Hi, yes, you want to turn your hips back and through. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hi Clay. I am a member of your site and I really like the way your method and the way you teach. I have recently also been watching Phil Micklesons Short Game lessons and I think they are very good. One thing you didn't mention is that when you open the face that you need to adjust your stance so that the face of the club is aligned with the target, which seems to me to promote a somewhat open stance rather than square to the target line. What do you think about that? I am a relatively new golfer so this doesn't seem obvious to me.

Not necessarily. When you open the club face, all you are essentially doing is increasing the loft and trajectory of that particular club. If your swing is consistent, you've turned your 48° to a 52°, or 52° to a 56°, etc.I have found that adjusting my stance to account for an exaggerated open club face causes me to inadvertently alter my swing plane. But I guess you just have to find what does and doesn't work for you.

Yes, but if you open the club face, shouldn't the club face be pointing at the target? I'm talking about opening the face and then regripping the club.

Yes the club face should always be pointing at the target because the ball starts where the face is aiming.

Clay - I have always been a 70% Up / Down from around the green until I got the yips about 5 years ago. I am a 4-5 handicapper and have no idea how to fix them. Don't think it is technique, as I pretty much chip like you are explaining. When I practice, I get everything within 3-5 feet. On the course, I get almost none inside 3-5 feet. Any Ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Luke, it's hard to say without seeing your swing but most of the time I see yips caused by coming down too steeply into the ball and being afraid to blade or chunk it. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

For the period he played in! Tiger was the best during the period he played in! Different equipment,,longer courses,,faster greens! They both are the best!
