Thanks for sharing.. Watching your repair videos gave me the courage to take on some repairs that I wouldn't have otherwise tackled. I recently repaired a 2 year old brushless cordless drill that someone I know tossed after the Chuck locked up on them, and they couldn't free it. Heated it up a little with the torch, put it in the vise and was able to free it up. Surprised them when I left it repaired on their doorstep. They thought it was unfixable.

My favorite activity is playing The Ultimate Recycler Drinking Game. If you guess the price, take a shot! One shot for every time you say “tip” or “scrap out”. One whole beer everytime you say “muck around” or “ripper”. Make yourself a Cheshire Cat cocktail everytime you say “Back in the kitty.” Drink the whole bottle if you say “I have a store.” Needless to say, I am now an alcoholic.

Amazing how old cables can add up. Might have to go through my shed now and get some beer money!

It is amazing! I get about 80kg in a large wheelie bin - which equates to $300-$400, depending on the current price! So three bins full is over $1000 😀👍

Thanks for the tip on the toilet roll sleeves. I've always struggled with the cords on my power tools. No more, Thanks. Check the speed on the Makita drill you're keeping. It may be a mixer drill. That would have a speed in the hundreds of rpm's rather than thousands. All kinds of tradesman will pay a premium for a good mixer drill.
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Месяц назад
Thanks Steve. Yep, I remember the drill having quite a low speed 'low' setting. It will definitely be a keeper! 😊

i had drills rejected from scrap at Sims Metal, back in the day, so I give any i end up with to a mate who micro scraps them electrically (if i could keep the chicks i probably would, and the angle grinder right hand drives can be handy for projects if they don't use the motor shaft as part of the assembly.
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Месяц назад
Thanks mate - yeah I think only sneaking a few drills at a time would be the go. Not sure I need to save chucks or right angle drives though!

Oh cool info on the jacket, thank for explaining. Those military coats really have unique style. When I get old drills I usually put a specific bit on it and only use it for 1 job. Like one for chamfering one for deburring ect. Mainly because the onlder drills have good power but are uncomfortable to use for long projects. And changing bits is a pain because of the chuck.
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Месяц назад
That's a good idea with the old drills Kayle, although they do take up space! Yep - we have all got a bit lazy with keyless chucks!!

Thanks Chris, interesting to see your approach, very pragmatic, it must be difficult to get any value as they're so cheaply available to but new today and most people aren't much interested in the quality ! I was surprised too, just how well the sellers came up with a little tic, that Armor-all did a great job ! Glad to hear you got a good result on the Starrett level too !

I've sold brand name broken drills (bosch, hitachi etc ) before due to people wanting to fix "old faithful". I remember My Dad was very particular about the Black and Decker angle grinder, which he ordered a new gear box for once and had the armature rewound after it got hot once. apparently it was the perfect shape for left handed use compared to ALL the others at the time.

How long ago was this? We live in a throw away disposable clown world nowadays, new tools are cheap and made to last the warranty repair is not viable. I remember as an apprentice fixing big hammer drills and grinders. They are still working now. Although rarely used.

When you cleaned one of the drills you said that the cleaning fluid got rid of the chalky appearance, you may not know but injection moulded parts, particularly cheaper products, the manufacturers use talcum powder as a bulking agent to save on the plastic pellets, if you scratch a moulding with a knife it will release the powder.

Interesting! I didn't know that, thanks mate! 😊👍

@@TheUltimateRecycler Actually a working chuck with screw on fitting is prolly worth $2-$5... they can be sort of a pain to get off. Is a few good youtubes on the topic though.

My current yard will take a drill plastic casing and all and classify it as an electric motor. The other yard I use wants the plastic casing removed to classify it as an electric motor.

@@nicks1266 my local yard here in Redcliffe won't take all wire with plugs on even Christmas lights for $3.2. if I go to another yard I got to sorted the grades of wire out and cut the plugs off and it goes from $1 up to $4 something.
