Thanks Gavin love the pyRevit content. Love the base tool selection in memory stuff. Didn't know you could use it for reopening views. I have something that needs to get view ids, saving them might help my workflow

Hey Gavin, thanks for the great content! Just wondering if there is a particular reason to pickle the view_ids as one string, rather than the list itself?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 5 месяцев назад
Main reason for me is I prefer to write external files in a way which other programs could deconstuct, just a habit I've gotten into. Pyrevit knows how to unpickle lists, but only because it has an inbuilt approach to do so. Can certainly use it of course though, dont let my quirks stop you :)

Hello Mate, I appreciate the insightful content you've created. Can you offer advice for someone seeking a job in the BIM field in Australia, currently residing in the UK, and having four years of experience?
@AussieBIMGuru

A lot of my generic advice can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6nrWRKenpTg.htmlfeature=shared RE UK specific advice, important to understand that the 'BIM Field' in Australia is not as clearly resolved as in the UK. We have little to no mandation, and most BIM managers/coordinators reside in AEC disciplinary firms and roles. Some large clients/contractors engage BIM advisory consultancies, but they will typically expect that you have some experience in the client space to join them. Examples include IIMBE, BIM Consulting and Mott McDonald have a department for this. Hansen Yuncken, Laing O'Rourke and Cimic have all developed a long way digitally, if a little shackled to Autodesk. Revit is king for BIM authoring here, despite what some ArchiCAD enthusiasts might say. I wont necessarily say that's a good thing though, OpenBIM is still not well understood as a result of this focus. The market has been highly competitive for quite a while now, and all but the large clients have been regressing away from BIM for all but project delivery purposes. FM is still very much not involved in the picture and Cobie/IFC literacy is generally low here vs UK. In time that may lead to more demand for BIM savvy professionals when client expectations develop further, but I know some have come from the UK to Australia and had a bit of a 'Paris syndrome' experience. Research cost of living and rental markets before you dive as well as it's pretty bad here currently. Not too different from London in all captial cities RE cost of living and rental scarcity. Housing market is even more cooked. Sydney/Melbourne are the opportunistic cities with Brisbane looking promising. Perth/Adelaide are more affordable but less roles unless you work with a national firm (like I am). Darwin/Hobart/Canberra are very quiet, remote work at best for most. Hope that helps!

Hi! Is it possible to automate the quantity takeoff for concrete, reinforcement, masonary.. etc using Dynamo?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 5 месяцев назад
Generally most of this can be done in Revit using scheduling. Walls, floors etc can be queried for their areas, lengths etc as properties also to build data files such as csvs that power bi can receive, but you need good data to ask for initially
@user-ue4vi6vx2l

@@AussieBIMGuru Thank you. Have you published any videos with similar content? I thought using Dynamo would help to extract the quantity of all building trades (concrete, reinforcement...) in one shot. Does scheduling in Revit allow us to get the data in one shot? or do we need to select each trade manually and extract the data individually? Sorry if the question is so stupid
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 месяца назад
@@user-ue4vi6vx2l no problems. If you model accurately and develop good data setup schedules can do most of the work or dynamo can generate extracts. The key is having workable data in the first place though, dynamo can't solve that part. I have a series on cost scheduling and takeoff here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ll9JvkUiGoA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d54HoPH3T_A.html

Gavin I have a separate question from this video: I have a family that needs to be scalable based on different view scales automatically the family needs to understand what scale it is being displayed as and follow a preset visibility size. For example I put the family in plan and when I am in a 1/4"=1'-0" it would show as a 1'x1' and if I create a new view in the same project with a 1/16"=1'-0" it would make it slightly smaller, this is so the element doesn't look too large when I am getting down to smaller scaled views. Thank you.
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 5 месяцев назад
Unfortunately Revit has no scale detection capability in families. The onlly option would be to make a parametric detail item family and build all sizes by scale in as types. It is not possible to ask a model/3d family to display differently in separate views by scale. The only other approach beyond then i can think of is to use subcategories and 2d representation in plan, elevation etc. and turn the large/small graphics on,/off in view template settings to show it in different ways.

@the_revit_tutor 5 месяцев назад
@@AussieBIMGuru thank you for your reply. I don't think these suggestions will work for me because even though you choose a type or check boxes for visibility in any one view its going to cause it to change in all views due to its parametric nature. Also I don't want to double my work by placing the family 2 times and needing to move it again in 2 views. What I have done is I have a 3D family with a 3D symbol made from a generic family that's nested in the main family and so when its in any view it does scale itself down as most 3D modeled elements do. but I wish I could get it to be resized graphically in views. I guess trying not to work like I'm in AUTOCAD ya know. lol anyway thank you.

@@the_revit_tutor my only other thought is using nested annotation objects and detail level but youd need to be categorically consistent with detail level overrides and be limited to 3.

@@AussieBIMGuru That sounds possible do you think you could do a short demo on it so I could see what that looks like? This has been a issue online I did searches on the topic maybe its a video for your channel thank you.
