As we build the pole barn addition to our house, we get hit by a rainstorm! This will interrupt our work for sure, but will it at least make up for the water we lost when our pipes burst?

I would bery very wary of the concrete pillar and post placed on the top of the stairwell leading into your root cellar. Without reinforcing that wall, if you put pressure on it from the top, it's just a matter of time before it collapses.

Hey guys, I was looking forward to this weekend’s video. I just got out of the hospital yesterday. I had a heart attack Thursday night. They put a stent in one artery. All the others were clear. Kind of scary since just last year I had very extensive cardiac tests and passed with flying colors. Anyway, your videos are relaxing. Thanks.

Hey guys. Been following your channel and progress for many years now. I’m not trying to be negative but I’m concerned for your build and would hate to see your hard work destroyed by the winds out there Watching this video it appears you have set those posts 12” to 18” in the ground. Realistically they should be set at least 3’. 4’ might be better given how severe the wind can be in the desert there. Alternatively you could dig 3’to 4’ and pour concrete piers and set fasteners into them to bolt the wood posts to. I know it’s ridiculously difficult to dig into that soil. You should be able to hire someone with a machine to dig the pier holes or rent a machine fairly reasonably.

I'm a little worried about how shallow you are setting your long posts. The one's close to the dome looked to be only a foot or two in the ground. I know you are going to concrete them in but you might want to sink them deeper in the ground. Just a thought.
@dl08in
@dl08in 4 месяца назад
I wouldn't be too concerned about that as long as they use plenty of diagonal bracing. My biggest concern is how close they are putting those posts next to the stairs. The unreinforced walls around the stairs will be very likely to collapse - especially at the deeper side. I would dig down at least to the level of the adjacent stairs for those two. That would distribute the load into the ground more evenly. Then they can fill around them with cobb if they want.

Jim, those posts next to the root cellar walls should be on concrete pads. Cob isn't strong enough to bear that type of force over a small area. Sorry for making a negative comment, but I'd hate to see you find out the hard way. Use a broad slab like base to spread the area the force is distributed onto.

Just a comment. I have heard it is not a good idea to poor concrete for the post foundation as it tends to rot over time and break down. Derek Howlet used pea gravel for this poll foundation when he was doing his fencing. Just a thought.

My experince with posts is 3 quarter crush gravel so water can drain away some post I did was put some concrete at the base of the post then finish it with gravel I also dug out some cedar posts that the pioneers planted and they had a little rot at were the ground met the post .

Hi, folks! I was wondering if you had read about how setting wood (even treated wood) into concrete, actually shortens the lifespan. The problem is, with swings in temperature, whenever it drops below the dew point, there is condensation…even in the wood. With concrete, there’s no place for the water to drain. So, more and more, rebar enforced concrete piers are placed with the wooden piers attached on top by galvanized attachments. It means, you would have to place temporary supports until permanent structural supports were built in. You might have a little longer before rotting occurs since your humidity is usually low, but during the monsoons, the humidity is 50% or higher. There is a RU-vid video you might want to watch: “How we set posts on concrete ll Dr. Decks.” I had to replace the buried (treated) posts on our gazebos just because of this. The weather is wetter up here in the Pacific Northwest but, as I mentioned, your humidity rises during the monsoons. Just a thought to consider before the posts go in permanently. The Home Depot folks can give you more info/advice on this. PS: You have a wonderful broadcaster’s voice! Best regards, Marshall Dressel
