STORMY SAIL to the US, LONGEST PASSAGE Part 2!

This is part 2 of our passage from the USVI to the mainland US. In this video we safe-harbour in the Ragged Islands while we wait from Tropical Storm Arthur to move out of our way. From there we have a few days of stormy weather to sail through before we make it safely back to the US. In one of those storms we experienced more lightning, closer to the boat that we ever have before. We were convinced we were going to be struck. It was an eventful closure to our trip between the bad weather and things breaking. But it certainly was memorable.

Any of you guys almost (or have) been struck by lightning?!
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 4 года назад
Thankfully no, but a friend on a wooden sailboat and mast (and not the tallest mast in the anchorage) got hit by lightning. Burned out his radio. He replaced his radio and kept sailing and apparently got hit again coming into the Chesapeake because his radio was burned out again! Dude got hit twice in the same month on a wooden boat ⛵️⚡️

Nope, hasn't happen to me but I know many others who have. SSB antennas and other mast-mounted equipment are sure to fry.

@@RiggingDoctor So much for the "lightning never strikes twice" line! Whoa! My recommendation is to always have at least one (if not two) spare VHF handhelds in a waterproof bag with extra batteries/chargers in a small Faraday cage. Should the worst happen, i.e., a direct lightning strike, and all helm and and nav station equipment are fried, you can always fire up the spare handheld radios and be in business. If your budget supports it, make sure that they're AIS and GPS capable and all of the registrations are complete before you put them away. Check the batteries regularly.

@@RiggingDoctor Wow! We have met a couple people that have gotten hit and all of their electronics died.

Loved the video- especially Kelsey's "farewell" message. Also loved the little snippets "Land Ho" and the little giggles of getting stuck between the pipes. This was one of my favorite videos, great water adventures and just passing time! Will miss you Kelsey!

Agreed. Kelsey is an excellent second mate. Smart, light-hearted, cool and dependable. Hard to find anyone better for these kinds of voyages.

Great vlog episode guys. Kelsey has F.I.R.E. in her eyes !!! Jessica, the ultimate blonde Viking with her gold war paint. Just a great time !!! Towards the end, just could not leave out mention of Ryan's HUGE smile. Can see clearly how he and Kelsey are cousins. !! Actually looking forward to some refit as the family needs the modifications and upgrades.

Found your channel by accident, enjoying the videos. I'm an old ex Navy and Merchant Marine engineer. I've had the luxury of working on steam and diesel powered vessels anywhere between 150 and 900 ft long. I definitely would not want to ride out some of the storms I've been in in the North Atlantic and Pacific and Indian Ocean in a catamaran.

Those last two nights of lightning were intense. The first night was a great show because it was going away from us. The second night was not as fun because it was coming at us! We were wondering what it was like for you on the other side of Cay Sal Bank ... our radar looked about the same. Cheers! -Woven.

When I saw the preview for the video with the 'tow behind' I thought - yeah, those suits are coming off. Is it just me or is there something hot about those tattoos? Going to miss Kelsey. She was a hoot. I hope you have her on board again another time.

OK let’s talk about it! Before you leave Anchorage, you should go up your mast Check all your rigging, at least twice a month, you don’t realize it but when are you are sitting at idle, the sun does a lot of work on shit and so does saltSo you’re doing yourself a disservice! By not inspecting everything before you leave give it a pull give it a tug look at it. Make notes of things that look like they are going bad so you could check them more often! But you losing hardware on a passage is very preventable. You have three girls on that boat! Your lack of inspection process could be what put you on a reefDon’t you ever become comfortable, it leads to disaster. I’m not yelling I’m just informing you it’s your job as a captain to clear the rig and the boat before you leave the dock, don’t get me wrong I leave my socks and underwear in the bathroom after I take a shower. But that’s not the same thing that we’re talking about right now somethings need their do checks
