I do miss the portraits. I think the character art for each partner is really beautiful, and while the models have the general shape of the characters, I think it's a shame we won't see portraits in the character art style. Iyori definitely has the most eye-catching design of the bachelors, but I'm a sucker for bold colors in character designs, like Reina's sweater, Laura's orange sashes, and Blaire's bright dress. I wonder if the characters will have seasonal outfits? I hope they will, and the bachelors get a bit more of a colored pop to them.
I agree the portraits showed off the personality of the characters especially if they were shocked or embarrassed. Its going to feel weird without them.

Over the years I've learned to only choose someone once I actually start playing. There's been so many times where I go into the game dead set on marrying someone only to find them boring/annoying, and end up loving someone I wasn't interested in at all before starting
Trio of Towns gave me the opposite problem. Started dead set on Komari, but by the end of the game I liked all of the candidates and struggled to make a decision with only 2 save files.
Yes, I do that too. It’s like well I like the design of this character... but then the heart events and their dialogue is more important so I don’t make my mind up immediately. Sometimes I’ve liked the popular candidates, other times I find someone else more interesting. Then again I’m a girl in pretty pastel dresses surrounded by cute things, blasting heavy electronic or metal music in my headphones haha 😆 and I don’t want to be on tv or anything like that, it gives me hives and a stuffed nose so no I can’t be on camera I’m allergic and it would look horrible 🙃 it’s usually a stereotype that I shouldn’t listen to this type of music, and I don’t really like when people say I’d be a great model, like no I just like cute and pretty clothes, not being an advertisement for them 😌
Ironically, for a game that's not going to have character portraits, these are some of my favorite Bokujou Monogatari illustrations. They're all so simple but detailed with little action but a lot of personality. The illustrator also really found a happy medium with maintaining the typical Bokujou Monogatari "youthful" look while not making the characters not look like actual children. I love all the clothing especially, I'm not sure whose designing these outfits but they're doing a great job! I'm also super psyched that same-sex marriage is here to stay! I really hope this game does well...but they need to bring back portraits next time!

I'm so glad same-sex marriage seems to be here to stay in the series. I've loved these games my whole life and for so many years I've been forced to choose whether I want to play a character that matches my gender, or whether I want to be able to marry the characters that match my preference. It's never been an easy choice and it takes a huge weight off to finally be free from having to make that decision. Huge kudos to the designers for finally removing that restriction! I also think this is probably my favorite group of marriage candidates since A New Beginnings. A lot of good choices here. I'm very excited for this game!
I really hope they bring back Rival marriages. The world feels way more alive when your friends start getting married and other villagers talk about it for a season rather than the everyday dialogue, I was super bummed when I heard they took that out of the new Friends of Minneral town, so I hope they’re bringing it back
Apparently they’re unpopular with the Japanese playerbase, which is why they’ve been phased out. I don’t get it, myself. It just feels sad when you are the Only Hope of Romantic Love for all the cast.
I wish they had a system where you could trigger it. Not quite like old systems. Say you could tell a candidate you think that one of the others like them or something. But nothing forced so it wouldn't happen to players who don't want it.
Lowkey, wish they had a magical marriage candidate. I know we haven't really seen any evidence of magic so far in this game but I can hope right? I'm so used to having some kinda magic option
We have seen Earth sprites in the trailers and art, and the description on XSeed’s page includes some magical-sounding stuff. I’m holding out hope for a secret candidate.
I actually legit really like Jack. His smile intrigues me and I wonder if he's more than he seems. But his design in game looks way more polished, shading/edge wise than some of the others so far, too.
I first went for Damon but his personality was a huge turn-off. Unappreciative and just..uninterestingly cold imo, Jack is the complete opposite. He's very appreciative, humorous, and jolly too😩💕 he even does the little dance when you give him something he likes
I'm not sure if I will buy the game. I waited so long for the next Story of Seasons.. but the 3d models are lowkey too ugly to work without 2d sprites. I love the character designs so much and the artwork made for the characters. But the models.. I dislike them a lot. :' / I don't get why they decided against the character portraits, they are one of the most loved feature in this type of game. Design wise my favorite characters are Reina and Bridgette. They are so cute. I would totally marry them (and I could finally do it as a girl, yay!)
I agree I feel if SoS wanted to remove the 2D portraits they should’ve gone harder on the 3D models. I mean look at RF5 they have amazing models imo and nice portraits. Hopefully XSEED listens to the fan base and changes some things up. I still really want to support them but I might just do that through RF5
Same here. The portraits look good, and while the males are pretty bland I think the females have nice designs. But the 3D models/graphics are just super disappointing and bring the game down for me. They just feel really low budget and sterile. Even the models in the 3DS SoS games I think looked better, especially in the context of being on an actually low-powered handheld. I understand they probably do indeed have a low budget for this game, but that doesn't change how the end result still looks. Having the potraits on screen would have at least given a splash of more nice visuals, so it's a shame they left them out. Those sterile white dialogue boxes look so naked otherwise.
Agreed. It looks like they're using the same models as the 3ds games, and those just flailed around wildly to show expression. That didn't matter with the portraits to show their expressions and add a bit of life, but without them? Might skip this one, same as I did Friends of Mineral Town. (I had zero interest romancing little child-looking blobs.)
I would love if marriage candidates had a special trait about them that would help you if you marry them. Like since Bridget likes animals maybe if you married her she would feed your animals everyday or keep their happiness up more. Maybe another candidate loves farming so every morning they would water crops or increase their quality, another could love cooking so everyday they would cook you a meal that would replenish your stamina. Nice little traits that would make marrying people have more impact.
I wish games would be a lot more adventurous with designs for guys the way they are for gals. Most of the bachelors have really muted colors and similar silhouettes, which is a shame when you compare them to the bright tones and bold shapes of the bachelorettes'.
I'd love that to be honest. Secret marriage candidates always feel like hidden endings in the HM/SOS series, mostly because you have to work really hard for them. It's like hard mode, which is fun if you want to challenge yourself.
it'll probably be a dlc honestly. like how trio of towns had dlc marriage candidates! or just secret not mentioned ones. like Inari or Witch Princess were.

I am still mourning the loss of 2D portraits, HOWEVER. Damon has immediately captured my heart, just like every other HM/RF bachelor of that archetype (Dylas, Gill, Gray, Marlin, etc)
Haha I'm currently playing Rune factory 4 for the first time (somehow I completely missed these games when they first released) and I want to choose Dylas but not sure. I think y'all have motivated me to choose him.
The girls look great. The boys are alright. I’m really only interested in Damon and Iori. I really like the moody types so I’ll go for Damon. I need someone to fill the void after Dylas. That being said I’m open to everyone and looks are only half of the character. I’m much more swayed by personality so I look forward to meeting everyone.

Well I’m going to be honest with you that some of the marriage candidates are suck in my personal opinion & my least favorite marriage candidates so far in my personal opinion 1. Bridget : excuses princess 2. Blaire : not telling the player & miss misaki about her dream 3. Reina : taking her job too seriously 😒 4. Emilio : not Pay attention to the player 😒 5. Jack : negative talk about Damon behind my back 😒 so yeah I immediately avoid those marriage candidates immediately because I hate them so much right now
In love with Blaire and Reina, they’re gorgeous 😍 also Blaire gives me Eve vibes from magical melody as well as Muffy vibes, they’re all blonde waitresses lol. Blaire & Muffy are also both city girls who look pretty darn similar!
Listen, Damon popped up and I became very aware of my bias for these games. But all the girls are so cute and well designed! If the same-sex marriage didn't come to this game, I definitely would've been dead set on Damon, but now he's got A LOT of competition. I can't wait to play this game!
I love how Bridget is so heavily inspired by Ellen from the SNES Harvest Moon, the 1st game of the franchise if I am not mistaken! She's even got the little bird that get's lost in the older game added to the illustration! I really love the feeling of her being Ellen's descendant or something haha
I really like Bridget's personality and her short hair, her design is super cute. Reina has the best design IMO it's just so flashy and chic. Emilio might be my favorite bachelor just because the whole goofball and laid back persona. Eyori reminds me a lot of Nami from AWL so I'm interested in learning more about him. Ralph just seems so serious but cool. The rest are kind of lackluster and seem already done in past HM games.

I agree with a lot of the comments about the girl vs boy designs and even was talking to my brother about it lol. A lot of the time their personalities make up for it so I will have to get to know them and see who takes my heart!!

I love Damon, kinda liked Emilio, but after seeing his in game model no way. He doesn't have that playful smile, his hair looks black instead of the dark brown, and his eyes look totally different. Sigh. I miss you portraits.
It's nice to see family relationships in the candidates! It makes sense that a seemingly small town is made up of siblings! Damon is absolutely nailing my heart, as to be expected from someone who fell for Vaughn and Gray haha! But the other candidates look nice too! Maybe wish there was more variety in terms of color scheme and palettes? Well, who knows, their development could make up for it!

Dang you must be really pretty then. Honestly Reina shares the same look as many girls you'd see at the mall or at school or something. She just seems really realistic appearance wise, which is a huge reason I like her
man. I really feel like they got pretty close to perfect with Animal Parade. Still my favorite to this day. I don't want them to replicate that game, but I think they need to take a look back at past games once again so recapture the magic of the series. And maybe go back to some more successful aspects of the games. Still excited though. I'll probs marry Daimen. I'm a sucker for that type.

See...I like Ralph's portrait, but his in game model is...oof. also did anyone else think for a second he was military? I definitely wish he were, it would be a nice idea for a bachelor or bachelorette.
I don't love the aesthetics in more recent games but I do think they're getting better at what they're aiming for. In my opinion the sprites look noticeably much cuter than they did in the previous two story of seasons titles! (They look more...filled out instead of stick figure-y) It makes it more appealing to customize the player character to me~!

I just started it on Switch after it recently went on sale and am loving the crafting aspect of it and the art style (the character design isn’t my favorite but the overall art is lovely)!
I haven't played my time at Portia! That's a game that's been on my list forever but I just never got around to playing it. I guess I'll have to try it sometime soon now that a sequel is coming 😂
I was really hoping I'd have one I'd gravitate to immediately, but I'm really not feeling strongly about any of them yet. I love Iori and Blair's designs, but they're more the type I'd rather play as than date. Honestly I may end up going with Daimon 100% because I'm a sucker for stargazing based events. I love stars and they're pretty much impossible to see due to all the light pollution where I live, so stargazing is a big selling point for me. I also love museums and hope to spend a lot of time there, so Reina's possible for that reason. But I like to go in with a firm choice in mind so it's a bit disappointing that none of them really grabbed me.
I feel like they put more into the designs of the female characters..... me, my sister & brother watched & we all agree on that. I’m still buying it to support but this is the most lackluster batch of characters we’ve had in my opinion when it comes to guys. The most interesting looking ones to me are Iori & Reina so I’m aiming for them but I might give Damon a try. We’ll see how I feel when it’s released
We have the same taste! 🙌 And I feel you heavy on the "lackluster" the boys look mostly plain. I am disappointed in the lack of diversity... I wonder if it has something to do with the artists? Maybe they don't know how to design characters around POC or dont want to offend anyone's cultural background.. so it ended up too safe? ...though to me that is making an excuse. I feel like the developers, the people who hire these artists, should make sure they are able to cater to diverse audiences.

I feel like they just wanted to hurry up and get a game out since they haven’t had any new ones besides the mineral town remake. I’m one of those people that would rather wait so they can make sure everything is good when it comes out. Maybe they put more into rune factory this time?? Those characters are pretty nice!! Emillio:Kai but less annoying if u're trying to marry him Rin:SHE'S SO CUTEEE! i lovee her design Iori:Idk bout u guys but i think he's a husbu material (i wish i spelled his name right lmao) Lara:Her backstory and design is STUNNING she's like a less weird version of basil/jennifer Ralph:He seems like a guy that i would like to have a drink with, he looks chill Blair:Kinda like muffy/katie lovechild Jack:He looks like a more mature gray, he also kinda reminds me of gill with that calm personality All of these candidates looks AMAZING and i'm even more HYPED for this game cuz of the same gender marriage being a feature, i just can't waittt omggg👏❤️❤️

As a gay man, the only bachelor I'm really interested in is Iori... I really like his design (maybe Emilio too...). I do think the girls look overall better, especially Rin and Laura. It's a bit of a shame, but maybe I'll fall for the guys once I actually play the game >.< I think I'll at least marry Iori and Rin, they look really cute. Laura's design is the best tho
It really doesn't bother me as much as before that we don't have character portraits. If you think about it all home console games didn't have them. Magical Melody, Tree of tranquility, animal parade, a wonderful life so i have made my peace with it. for the marriage canidates: Bridgette: She is cute. She reminds me of Georgia from A tale of two towns Damon: Not my cup of tea. Maybe i am too old to be attractive to the bad boy persona Reina: the new Karen from her looks. I really like her. Emilio: He is okay i guess. Rin: Oh my god she is adorable but she looks like she could be my little sister. Iori: My favorite from the boys at the moment. He reminds me of Yuzuki from Trio of towns and i loved him too. Laura: and my favorite from the girls. Her design was the first that really piqued my interest Ralph: I like him but i need to see more from him. Blair: Not my taste at all which is okay. She really reminds me of Muffy. Jack: from his name to his design he is really boring for me but who knows looks can be deceiving after all

I can see how some people think the male candidates are a little .....plain but, I’ll take these candidates over the horrific ones from the last group of harvest moon games. At least these guys are believable and cute instead of weird, bobble headed and old guys or ones that look like children. I think all the candidates offer a new view on style while staying true to the story of season feel and look. I also think that the styles can’t be too over the top because that’d take away from the feel of the games. I personally cannot wait for this one. Thank you Wilder for sharing☺️

Blair is a *tad* too bright for me but that is literally the only thing, and I still actually love her design. (So happy same sex marriage is back.)

@Darling Vexa Art I really honestly just don’t see a reason to not like the other candidates getting married if you’re already married yourself. It makes no sense to me. It adds more depth and personality to the characters by allowing them to interact more with each other. The world also feels more alive by having events that don’t revolve around you. And “I never liked that” and “Neither did Japan” aren’t good explanations.

for the love of all thats good, they better have a lot more dialogue text per character then the usual five or six lines you get spread out of each heart color, legit reading this is half the game but marvelous falls through on it, id actually pay money for Dlc dialogue updates

While Bridgitte's love of animals draws me to her. Have you seen the Coropon yet? What do you think about them if so? I can't wait to find out more and for the games release! I kind of feel bad for One World release only a few weeks earlier beacuse I think most people may wait for PoOT.

I wonder if these candidates will be mostly chill or have any peculiar/funny quirks. Like when comparing them to bachelor/ettes from the 3DS/Wii line of games and M/FoMT, the characters here seem more relaxed.
Damon reminds me of Neil and Neil is my #1 favorite bachelor ever. He's the only one I've never gotten around to marrying, but I've always loved the most lol ANB was so good
