Watched some webinars presented by AERA with Cass Choate, and lifter needle failure seems to happen at higher mileage as is fastest spinning bearing after turbo joural bearings.
The lack of fuel getting to the injectors story after changing the filter in your case reminded me of a few years back of my being clueless to the fact that GM did not have an electric assist pump on the duramax before 2017. I saw a guy sitting there on the highway with a pickup and gooseneck flat deck right at the city limits, I stopped and he said he had run out of fuel ( of course his fault for not having grabbed some fuel back at the prior town with that company he was driving hot shot for ). He hopped in with me and we went to a service station where he bought a new jug and put some fuel in ... back to the pickup and pours that in and then proceeds to crank it over and of course no sign of life. I just didn't understand the GM system and had asked him, do you know if there is a manual primer system on it or does it self prime and he was clueless as well. He had a phone and that was his next move to call his company and I left as there was nothing I could do because I just didn't know the procedure on a GM to sort out the lack of fuel getting to the injectors. I knew that was most likely the issue, no fuel at the injectors and later had asked a neighbour who owns a couple of different Duramax vintages and he said oh yes it has a manual pump and his 2015 is a complete bastard to get to the pump he mentioned. At least the ford back in the 6.0 era had the foresight to put an electric pump on and you are well versed with the 6.0 😁
