A friend requested a video of honing on a small coticule. This is just to show some of the different strokes that can be used on small stones. This one measures 4 inches long and 1 1/4 wide and is a vintage.
Thanks Edgar. Yes that's just water that I'm using. When you're ready to finish the razor you can use water, oil, lather if you like. They all work very well.
Thank you. The back is belgian blue. As far as vintage vs newly mined...it just depends on the individual stone. Neither is better or worse than the other in my opinion.
+dcaddo2 I've had the same experience. I have a vintage coticule with natural BB backing and a newly mined stone with the slate backing. The vintage stone is very creamy and beautiful cuts fast and is pretty fine. The new stone cuts a little slower, but leaves a superior edge under magnification. I use the two stones in order from older to newer. I sometimes like to go all the way up to a 12k superstone then back to my finish coticule, so I know that only coticule abrading striations are left on the bevel. To me it tends to soften the hot 12k edge. There must be a tremendous amount of variation from stone to stone and appearances can be deceiving. Just looking at them one would tend to assume that the older stone would be of a finer grain, and that the newer one would cut faster, but just the opposite is true.
I have a vintage coticule that is so coarse it destroys the edge with big chips. it sounds like honing on sandpaper. it has a razor label on it. food for thought.
Hmm it might be a stupid question, but usually I was using stones that both sides were of different gradation, is this the same situation here ? Does the black side have higher/lower gradation than yellow side ? And generally I am very impressed how You make Your blade sharp. It shows that you can make Your razor sharp everywhere :)
Hi. That is a vintage glued coticule...the back side is BBW (Belgian Blue Whetstone). Some people use the BBW side, I typically do not, with the exception of La Lorraine.
Hi. I don't put grit ratings on natural stones, but in my opinion most coticules with slurry fall somewhere in the midrange category for razors. If I'm using a coti to finish, I'll place it after a 5k synth, or sometimes an 8k synth depending on which coti I'm using. If you have more questions you can always find me at badger and blade in the honing forums. My user ID is Dcaddo111. Thanks.
