Hi Keith. Could you elaborate a little about those "black Thuringians" you showed at the end of the vid? I have several of those in 1x5x.5 inch. They seem a little harder and courser than my blue/green and dark blue Thuries...but they cut faster. I use them right before finishing on my thuries. They were sold as Swedensteins...is there any truth to that assertion? Thanks.
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 10 дней назад
Not much to elaborate on really, those in the video were from the end of Thuringian hone production after Escher had to find a new location to quarry. Schwedenstein stones were something else, coming from much older strata. Typically not as fine as the Escher type hones.

Steel is steel. The rock doesn't know or care what the tool is. If you search RU-vid I am sure you will find many videos about using Coticules to sharpen all sorts of things.
@planofman8599
@planofman8599 15 дней назад
I just used an old coticule to put the final edge on all my wife's kitchen knives. That particular stone works good for that. In general, I've found that coticules put too smooth of an edge on knives for my taste. I use a fine grit synthetic to put the edge on, and a few passes on the coticule to smooth and refine it a little bit. BBW (Belgian blue whetstones) are nice for polishing the sides of knife blades and getting a nice matte satin finish. Coticules, like Japanese naturals, can be a good "if you can only use one stone from start to finish" stone. In my opinion, coticules round the edge on knives a bit more than other stones, making those edges lean more towards the smooth end of the 'sharpness' spectrum. They aren't as 'sharp' or 'bitey' as a blade sharpened on other types of whetstones, but they retain their edge longer. You want a coticule that turns black fast as you hone. This indicates a fast coticule with lots of garnets. This is good for knives. Again, this is my experience, using my knives, on my stones, which will be different than everyone else's. Most natural stones don't work well with modern hard knife steels like VG-10. Coticules are one of the exceptions.
@morehn
@morehn 15 дней назад
@@planofman8599 very interesting. I recently invested in a bunch of natural stones and mostly I love all of them other than the Arkansas because they don't create much slurry, but I'm trying to figure out why your stone could be good or bad for a knife versus a razor. I want to produce a perfectly sharp edge on a knife and it will be cool if I could get a reflective, polished edge. I have a Coticule, bbw, Arks, the green and Black Shadows, a few jnats, and a thuringian on the way.

Love it Keith. I mean, I have koma, and enjoy it, but can do without. I also jump from 1.5k to 5k, I could add a 3 k, but will it improve my results, or bring me joy?
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 Месяц назад
Whether or not adding a stone to a progression will add to the end result in a tangible positive way depends a lot on who's honing, how good their skills really are, the razor in question, which 3k is chosen, and possibly other variables. Assuming the stones are Shapton Pro stones, the 1.5k is 9.8 µm and the 5k is 2.94 µm. There is no Pro 3k. So we pick from another system. If the newly found 3k is in the 5.5 µm range, then we might assume the 3k will handle 1.5k work more easily, and we are now asking less of the 5k and allowing it to really shine. Possibly, there may be a cleaner and more efficient bevel refinement realized in the long run. But not if the skills and patience aren't there. The user would also have to have the ability to discern subtle differences in edge quality.

I guess im too impatient and heavy handed.i tried again to slurry my translucent with a 1000 grit diamond and still i couldn't get a silky smooth shave.i ha mappin and osborn and german gong made in solingen .I guess some people are better at certain things
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 Месяц назад
For starters, it is a learned craft and it takes time and patience. And yes, some people are better at some things than others are. Using a straight and honing them isn't everyone's cuppa tea but it's not so esoteric that only select people can do it. . Using slurry on a translucent Ark to finish is a guaranteed fail. It's not a Jnat, the slurry doesn't get finer, it just rams into the apex over and over again until it makes a saw tooth edge. There is absolutely zero point in making slurry on an Ark to finish a razor and there is every reason in the world to not do that. To be successful in this discipline, one has to fully understand the concepts and tools.
@peetsnort
@peetsnort Месяц назад
@@KeithVJohnson1 I can't get fine enough honing oil.the real stuffs too expensive. I tried dawn for a while but it clogs up. The slurry method allows me to use water. I often wonder what the indians used in the olden days. The name whet was the sound it made when you got the right edge and not wet.. Anyway. Thanks for the reply. I will just carry on withe slurry on my 10 inch hard arkansas and the translucent. I just use the disposable blades from lidl. Very cheap 1pound 30 penny for a pack of ten. My kitchen knives are sharp enough See you
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 Месяц назад
You are killing your edge with slurry. I've used dish soap on 1000s of Ark finishes without problems - it doesn't clog, I think you are using it incorrectly. "Honing Oil" is not needed, mineral oil works fine, so does castor oil, 3 in 1, glycerine, etc.

@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 Месяц назад
I usually finish on natural stones which don't have an assigned 'grit'. In general, discussing honing, particularly finishing, in terms of grit is sorta pointless. What person A experiences from an XYZ grit finisher is very often not what person B experiences from a stone of the same 'grit'. Try stuff, see what works best for you.

@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 Месяц назад
The process of determining Nagura quality is proprietary, the details have not been disclosed. Jurassic is a period, not an era - the Jurassic period is in the Mesozoic era. I do not recall the age of the deposits in Aichi, it's not a contributory factor. The deposits there are unique due to a number of very specific geological factors.
