Stranded Deep - Navigation Problems, Tips n Tricks 

Wow my friend, if there was a PhD awarded for Stranded Deep, you would be first in line, I will echo an earlier comment about never having seen a more technical and in depth commentary on any game at least that I have seen.On the subject of the stars, I think that at 17:25, that may be the Plough constellation to the right (and slightly lower) of the centre dot, and then at 17:30 directly above the dot. You might be able to pinpoint exactly where we are if it is ;-)Great Work

Thanks for this video I was playing on ps4 and i found this big like boat on an island idk what it's called but it had a plane in it and then i was like oh cool... Went back to my raft and headed towards my island and then decided it was to far away so i stopped at a nearby island and then got completely lost and died to a shark lol.. great video

I was totally expecting you to just point out the flaw in the rising and setting of the sun. I didn’t expect a very thorough and comprehensive explanation with solutions. That grid system idea is great

What your great research shows is that we should be really disappointed by the game mechanics. Computing sun/moon positions in a given location is very short task for even a few-decades-old computer. Even computing real stars on the sky every fraction of the second is negligible for contemporary gaming PC. Also magnetic declination for given position and time is known and measured, and could be easily inserted into the game. Navigating using real astronomical/geographical angles would be another level of game immersion, and also great educational tool :) Wouldn't it be nice to see low orbit satellites running through the night sky? Or geostationary ones hanging without moving? There is a binocular in the game for f. sake ;) Primitive and/or bugged solution actually implemented looks like massive waste of all that opportunity :(

Thanks for making this video. It is most helpful. I’m new to the game and on my first day (both irl playing and in-game 1st day) I died from poisoning after being lost at sea. I had been using a compass and checked it repeatedly, but still went to the wrong island traveling home. I miscalculated how far off I was and headed to a nearby island thinking it was mine. It wasn’t. I died before I could figure out where I needed to go. Some of the things you covered would have helped me survive and will definitely help in my new game.

This is the only Stranded Deep tips video that was actually helpful to me. There's so many "Tips" videos on this game that mostly cover the basic things most players will learn own their own during the early game hours. I even saw a "Pro tips" video that listed using your axe on trees to get sticks as one of the advanced tips. You just earned a new subscriber. Thank you.

I just started playing this game . I'm also a Captain who was taught navigation. I didn't notice that the sun was off so bad. Good job on the research and thank you for the information.

No wonder the sun didn't make sense in-game. Maybe you can message the developer with this video, perhaps they will rotate the sun path ...or respond with their own reason for the big discrepancy. Thanks, awesome research!!

One of the most comprehensive and well thought out game tutorials I've seen. Thank you. I was certainly confused about navigation when I first tried the game. The original Cartographer did not include a compass bearing so I assumed that the top of the map was north. However I realised that wasn't right in-game so I checked by flying around in god mode. I worked out that North was 45 deg to the right. Eventually the game cartographer included a compass and my calculation was proved correct It is quite common for maps to be printed with North facing other than the top - it is done for the purpose of fitting it on the page conveniently. However it is necessary to include a compass bearing on the map. So I don't think that the compass bearing on the cartographer represents the difference between true north and magnetic north. It just represents 'North' (both true and magnetic), and the map is printed at an angle.

I know this is an old video, but wow! Thank you for these explanations. The current fact and the sun/moon navigation. I was already on to them with the map layout and wonky compass lines. But you gave a a few extra facts that just might save a wayward sailor. This game is cool, but could use some polishing.

I absolutely HATE that they made the North/South directions so freaking janky. I can't ever figure out where I'm going. I can't even tell by looking at the map. That was a seriously bad decision on their part. But thanks for your vid! I'll probably still never be able to navigate around though, lol. I'll probably just go play Subnautica again.

I found the boss by luck one time that’s the main problem with the game. If you don’t come on RU-vid to see the game doesn’t explain anything really.

Letting your wife play for 15 minutes is the best way to get completely and utterly lost. Even the compass cannot help after that haha.

No compass playthrough is a trophy on playstation, I'm 18 days in. Sunrise is my main tool for direction orientation, and you can always check cartographer if you get off track.

Highly technical analysis of course... but it’s actually so much easier for players to just think of the sun rises on the bottom and sets at the top of the map. These would be true south and true north for us. Obviously you identify their math error accurately reflected towards the end of your video. Funny that the developers made such a simple yet blunderous error lol

I don't really use a compass. I just try to keep my in game ADD in check by picking an island to visit and not getting off track, and then when I get to the island I make a little stick arrow point back to the direction I came from lol Edit: I wasn't that far into the video before I posted this comment and eventually got to the idea I thought was my own hahaha

Have a question. What is the big beached ship for in the game? Found it couldnt get in it but can’t find anything on it.

A small fix to all of this would be to allow the use of the compass while you are on the rudder/motor of your raft

I hate being lost, but the part that this game have no map is make it more fun.

I personally bought a leather journal to draw a map and keep a voyage log I name my islands put compass directions (using the white dot) ship locations. But I do recommend keeping a voyage log with directions.

Maybe use rocks on the sand to spell out compass degree numbers that point to home Before you head to an island use the compass to point to that island, and then note the degree, and more importantly note the opposite degree because this is what you will write in rocks on that island as it will take you back home.

Sacrificing a palm on every island, and labeling it is a genius idea. It's more visible at a distance than a shelter is, but the shelter idea is a good one too. Nice work!

If we ever get stranded together, I'm leaving all the navigation to you. Just leave the hunting and fishing to me.

Okay... So... You said S-SE for the Sunrise is fine but had issue with Sunset being N-NW but that is EXACTLY the other direction of Sunrise.. So what is the problem it is the same placement... Also here in America in the middle of the day the sun isn't totally to the South midday... Also we don't know where the fictional islands are located other than Pacific.. So we cant go by real science there anyway... But.. I would like them to add stars to guide you at night.

Very, very clever and well done. I use a shelter at every island pointing to my chosen island base. I have also taken a picture of the game map on my tablet and that's how I know where I am. Yes, I got lost and that's why I started using shelters on different islands pointing to home base. Things have changed for the Xbox One since your video. Stay safe.

The developers are from Brisbane Australia. Below the Tropic of Capricorn. There the sun always sets north of west. Perfect for me Maybe there should be a setting in the game for folks that come from Northern or Southern hemisphere. btw, great vid Agoork. Awesome skills

Try this: Save the game, restart, go to cartographer, the red square is where you are at. Return to game. Take a compass bearing on an island, remember the bearing, and go there. When you get there save the game asap, quit, restart, cartographer. You now know 3 things: where you where, The compass bearing that you traveled, and where you are now on the cartographer map. Using the cartographer map and knowing that all islands are aprox. in 45 degree increments (N, NE, E, ect) you can figure out how to navigate between islands.

Since I'm going without using the compass to get the PS4 trophy, I use spears and the label maker to mark out the directions on each island I go to. The label maker is SO useful.

This video is relevant up to this day. I have learned my self a few tricks on the way, one of em is simply to take short notes with perspective always from the place I came from. In that way I can always go back the exact way and If I forget it I can just look at my notes.

erp; nope; even if they used a truer to life constelation map the angle is all wrong and many known constellations like the bg dipper or the southern cross are not visible; and the actual sky night doesn't look anything like in the game; I live in a tropical area and apparently the game crashed you about the caribbean where Cuba and antillies are; so the big dipper and severalnorthern constellations shouold visible and they aren't.

I like how I guessed tropic of Capricorn before you said. I felt smart than continued watching and ohh boy.. 😅

I just went to the cartographer mode, screen shoted the map, then sent it to my phone. I use my phones photo editor to chart courses on it and use the compass in game to help follow them. I'll mark off which islands I have looted as I go, so I know to skip that particular one. Problem solved.

They got so many geographic details right but a god damn crab can kill me if I go afk and 7 spears won't kill a small shark lol

I used to scuba diving before, so i just pointed the compass to the direction i intended to go, and once done i just do 180 degree back to the original.

The game was created in Australia they probably you witness it from that direction to that direction everyday

Easy get a sleeping bag keep on the rath save go to main menu check map re load game works for me i got lose once and lucky i had a sleeping bag

It's really helpful for people like me who can't use the compass cause the trophy, thanks for this video

The sunrise and sunset in real life isn't even entirely accurate. It can vary up to like 60 degrees

Hi, love the vids man. What I learnt by making my own map on paper is that the map is not a square grid but actually a 5 by 5 diamond honey comb. So travelling north or south you will pass two islands either side before you reach land. where as east and west is direct. I made a map using interlocking circles as it was easier to draw. I never get lost now.

Agora: Have you made any videos regarding navigation with the new scattered maps with 50 islands? This video is great and I used the information more than any other video when playing SD. With the scatter maps I’m having some trouble determining the precise heading to travel between islands that are far apart. Also wondering if you have updated your grid map to track the islands in game? I’ve tried splitting up the boxes by adding new lines on your map download. I hope this is making sense. thanks again for your great videos.

Honestly, if you know how to use a compass in real life you're fine. You don't need to know the game mechanics. I've used the compass using real life triangulation in game without seeing this video before and it's always worked

Okay, so I figured out how to use the stars in order to determine your compass direction. I'm assuming that the stars are always moving in the same direction, right? So by that logic you could use the same method that you used to determine the north-south flow of the ocean to figure out which direction star map is scrolling across the sky..

Has anyone ever tried to make the islands connect via bridges? I know foundation won’t work but can it be done with the raft materials? Maybe a combo of raft and house parts would work?
