STRANDED IN A SNOWSTORM with my Aliner! 

I'm a long-haul trucker from Tennessee have been Trucking for over two decades some odd years ago I shut down one afternoon in Missoula Montana woke up about 2 in the morning looked out the window about three and a half feet of snow 34 below zero took a shot of whiskey and went right back to bed set there for 3 days loved every minute of it

I would hunker down and stay for a couple of days to make sure it was safe..truck stop..showers, food, hot coffee, rest rooms..yea i'm good.

I have literally watched this video 50 times, always right before I got to bed. I think how nice and cozy that would be inside the trailer during that snow storm all warm and sheltered and it helps me sleep soundly.

I know that trucker that you helped will never forget you.

Sir. If you do not have one install a CB radio with the long whip antennas. Not a small hand-held as they are not good on the range. Truckers are your best source for asking about road conditions...”West bound can you please let me know how the roads are looking behind you”? That sort of thing without even leaving the truck stop yet. I was over the road for 9-10 years and learned just how good the network with the truckers is. Safe travels.

I have been a truck driver for 20 years. I have used the electric heating pad style for years. Saves a lot of fuel.

When the temp gets that cold put your clothes in the foot of the sleeping bag to keep them warm as I learned in the Boy Scouts back in the 1940's.

It's only 42 degrees where I live, and at least 65 inside my house, yet I'm watching this while rolled up like a burrito in my electric blanket! So awesome that he was stranded himself, and helped the trucker out! My grandfather was a trucker, and I feel he would want me to say: thank you for that! Classy move sir! 👍

I'm from Thailand and I knew nothing about snow until I went to Iceland and drove in a snow storm there. What a nightmare.

Gonna make a suggestion here that I offer for anyone sleeping in cold conditions. Much as you dress in layers for the cold you should prepare you sleeping area in layers. There is a reason why there are such a thing as four poster beds and there is no reason you can’t recreate that effect in your trailer bed. A simple horizontal line running from head to foot of your bed with some sort of cloth “tent” above your body will help to hold in the heat escaping your body and not diffusing it into the ambient air of the trailer. Especially considering where you are it will help to dampen sound and light pollution in your sleep

When the roads are that bad I would not have left the truck stop. There are so many dangerous drivers on icy roads. Glad that it worked out for you. Thanks for sharing

I was a semi driver and I went down in between 2 mountains and I got stuck in a 8 foot snow drift. I got out and measured it and made sure that I was still on the road and I was. I spent 2 days with no cellphone reception in my truck but I had a full tank of fuel and food to eat. I kinda felt like I was camping. It was pretty fun. I had my TV and movies to watch until I seen a plow truck come. I had to remove the snow away from my truck to get out but I was able to drive again. I would recommend everyone to have food with them in the winter and keep your gas tank full as possible. Warm clothes would be a definite plus in your survival in this situation. I was lucky to have soup and a electric cooktop to heat up my soup. I never thought I would be in that situation but I had everything I could ask for and I had fun during that time. Alone in the Washington state woods and I even had Christmas lights on in my truck to help keep me positive. I did try to shovel my way out but I wasn't going anywhere, I drift was so huge and I would have needed alot of space to backup and get my speed up the mountain ahead of me. Even with chains and the road plowed, my tires were just barely getting up the mountain but I had no other issues after that and I am lucky to have everything I had and I was lucky that was the only time that happened. I didn't need a tow truck, I was only stuck because of the massive snow drift. It was as if my truck was suctioned cupped into the snow, when I was stuck. I said to myself, really, I have the worse luck but then I relaxed and enjoyed the rest cause I worked all week. I got my much deserved 34 hour restart and I had a emty 70 hours log book again. My company was laughing when I told them I had all the soup and coffee I could eat and drink because I had just went for my week shopping in Portland OR, while I was coming from LA to Seattle and then I was going to pickup a load in the backwoods of Washington and head east but the load was taken off me, when I got stuck and I wasn't able contact anyone.

Thanks for the video Slim . I just retired last week @66 . Will be making my way from California to the Springfield,Missouri area where I bought a nice farm there . I’m leaving right after I spend Thanksgiving with my son and his family here . I’ll be pulling a 10 ft utility trailer with a F-150 4x4 . This time I’ll pack along a set of snow chains just in case ,one set for the truck and one for the trailer to keep it in line . I’ve driven in snow before many times( 43 yrs driving truck cross country) but still respect the ice and snow . You did right calling it quits before it got dark , glad everything went alright and you made it home safely !

I just bought new Aliner in Florida. I can't imagine how cold that must be. I love the sunshine and will only go north in the summer. I learn a lot watching these videos. I had a Runaway camper before so it's a big step up for me.

NOTE FROM SLIM POTATOHEAD: I've had a lot of questions about the electric blanket. The one I have runs on 12Volts, 2.5 Amps (Measured, not rated amps). It is powered by the two 12V batteries I keep in my trailer. These are charged by my solar panels. Being low current, it is just enough to keep me warm under my sleeping bag in below freezing temperatures. As it is low current, it does not drain my battery significantly overnight. I put a link to a similar blanket on Amazon (see video description). Hope this helps. Thanks! SP UPDATE Nov 22: The electric blanket I linked keeps getting SWITCHED by Amazon as sellers sell out! Not the same as I originally recommended, and I can't control this. Just make sure you know the WATTAGE before you purchase. Thanks! SP

Glad you made it home safe. Driving in snow can be treacherous. Here in Westchester N.Y. drivers were stranded on roads over night in only six inches of snow. It pays to be prepared.

Old video but I just had to comment. When I lived in Calgary I was known to travel to that truck stop in Shelby because I loved their chicken fried steak! Always fun at the border “how long will you be in the U.S.?” “Just going for lunch, I’ll probably see you on my way home!” I used to keep my passport in my camera bag because I’d be down in the Lethbridge area taking picture and just have a hankering for their chicken fried steak. Mmmm…now I want one and I’m about three hours outside of Calgary, not so easy to hit up Shelby anymore! Great video, you’re an awesome story teller.

Easy in a Jeep bro, my WK pulled through 2 feet of snow and we were the the only car on the road - at least until we saw another Jeep :) Glad you were safe.

I'm glad also that you made it safe. I lived in Southern Oregon for nine years and although I know how to drive on the ice watching you fly down the highway with a trailer still made my stomach tighten up.

The A-liner is the perfect roof shape for shedding a snow load! Imagine a flat roof RV in this weather. You would have to climb up every hour to brush snow off, ugh! Actually, this is also an ideal scenario for a Dewalt 20V leaf blower - just blow that dry snow off! That dirty brown snow reminded me of my days in Buffalo, NY. The snow would cling to the back bumper behind the tires in one big clump you had to kick off! These clumps littered the whole place. So glad I live in California now! Nice scenery you showed us, thanks Slim!

You had me chuckling when you commented on earthquakes. A Southern California person the only sizable one I missed was January 17, 1994. We had moved to Canada for a couple of years. Some are pretty darn scary but most are like a street party. You go out to make sure you gas line isn’t leaking and wave to the neighbors who are doing the same. Pretty soon you go see if anyone remembers how to turn the gas back on, and everyone talks about the pros and cons of the the valves that turn off the gas if the lines are shaking. Someone checks the elderly and gets the water heater and the stove going. We make one more lap to see if everyone talked to loved ones who are out of the area and check on news of places to avoid or roadways not checked yet. And the party is over. Thanks for the experience. I’ve been thinking maybe an A-line is our next step in camping. Tenting is nice but now that we are camping just two of us and two dogs I would not mind skipping ground clothes and hunting for tent stakes in the dark.

In the past, quite awhile back I almost bought a small popup, then ended up buying a 17' travel trailer about 25 years back. It was a better choice than the popup camper especially when I used it in winter months. I had been looking at the A Liners for that reason as well because you have a hard shell as opposed to the canvas shell on a popup. For the vehicle you have I think you made an excellent choice on your camper. You can be warm and comfortable in it even in winter conditions, warmer than you would be in a popup. I always used the furnace in my camper when using it in the winter. I had two, 20# propane tanks on it but they do go fast when it's cold.

Glad to see you made it alright. If you're gonna get stranded pays to have one of those cool little camper thingy's. I'm living in BC these days, back when, just after the Gulf War, (I think in terms of events not years) I was back in Alberta shoveling out my truck, and cursing nature. The remainder of my family had all moved out to Vancouver BC some years before. Anyway, I call my brother up had a nice conversation but said he had to go and mow the lawn before he lost the daylight. They hadn't had any serious snow in years. I hung up said screw it and packed up deciding it was time I moved out to the coast. I slugged through Calgary and over top the Coquihalla highway, got down the other side and saw my first lush greenery in weeks. Clear roads and green fields. As I approached Vancouver it began to snow, which turned into the worst snowstorm they had had in decades. I was crawling along the highway literally the only vehicle. Luckily I had a tricked out Toyota 4X4, that thing was like a tank in any conditions. By the time I reached my parents house there was over 4 feet of snow and still coming down in blankets. Gotta love mummy nature. 😁

The dollar tree has moisture absorbing packages. I picked up three and tried them out in my pop-up. Outside temp. was 18 and warmed it up with a propane heater to 60. The next morning no condensation at all. They work well for three bucks.

I love these 'teaching videos'! I think this really answered my questions. Just lifting the roof in warm weather would be challenging for me and the A-Liner would be a lot more physical than some of my other RV considerations. Your journeys are wonderful and fascinating, even if horrific at times. I always learn from them and enjoy them!

This is the first video I have watched from you and I really liked it. Have watched many more since. Love the no-nonsense approach and the info you provide along the way. I'm trying to get organized enough to get out there and travel too, at least for a few years. Lot older than most to start this type of adventure but the dreams still there.

My Wife found your channel just by browsing the tube so we both subbed. We spend our time mostly making long hauls on I-80 from east to west. We both found your channel interesting as we are both well prepared also for most anything. But our w900 KW has a good size sleeper that is our home away from home for 3 weeks out of each month and than 1 week at home. I fail to see why anyone in their right minds would give you issues so you would need to clean them from your channel. We both feel really bad for you as you don't deserve it at all. I would love moments like this if I lived on the road like you do. To be faced with a challenge and overcome it is life affirming. Especially when success was because of planning and training.

I liked your video. Thank you for sharing. I am happy I came across it. I am from San Diego and the same thing happened to me, however, I only had my car. I kept driving through the snowstorm thinking it would get better, wrong. I ended up pulling off an exit at night and froze to death. I slept in my car scared stayed up all night...never again.. I will definitely know what weather is going on at the time. Thank you again.

I wouldn't exactly call it stranded being in the safe confines of a truck stop with plenty of help nearby if it was needed. Nevertheless interesting..

A simple candle will keep you warm as well. It is surprising how much heat they provide without endangering your health. I learned that trick in the Army.

Great advise. Nice trailer. In those adverse conditions I suggest putting a customized cheap tarp over your roof, would save you a lot of work when packing up. Stay safe.

because I have watched many of your videos , I know you don't hold it against me that I am not the kind of person who would buy a A frame, but I have enjoyed watching your videos and the adventures you are having are entertaining to say the least. I just wish I could do what you do but with a larger RV. you have more guts then I do. thanks for your posting your videos. right now my wife is fighting cancer again so we will not be going south any time soon, to top it off she has MS and back pain from that. FWIW, Slim; I prefer a polypropylene balaclava on my head when I crawl into bed in my insulated Cargo Van because & keeps my head & neck warm + it stays on my head no matter how many times I twist/turn while sleeping.
