Today I want to ask you: Are you making some mistakes that are hurting your English fluency and confidence goals?
Maybe you’ve been studying and practicing English for years. Maybe you even live in an English-speaking country. But speaking English is still a challenge.
And you might be doing everything right. You’re listening to podcasts, watching TV, doing a little English every day but nothing works. If that is true for you, then today I want to share 5 English learning mistakes you might be making. Unfortunately, these mistakes stop your progress in English fluency and confidence.
But they don’t have to. I’m going to tell you exactly how to stop making them.
In fact, these 5 mistakes are 100% avoidable. In today’s video lesson, I want to help you:
⚡️Identify if you are making some of these mistakes
⚡️Learn how to stop making them so you can make progress in your English instead
⚡️Avoid the stress, the frustration, and the feeling of being stuck that is a result of making these common mistakes
So if you can speak English but…
✨you always feel nervous and ask your colleagues to speak for you instead.
✨you lose your words, you forget what you want to say, and you can’t say what you want in English.
✨you’re so worried about mistakes or your pronunciation so you decide to stay quiet.
✨you’re always shy, nervous, and stressed. You’re tired and frustrated. You worked so hard in English but nothing worked.
Then you might be making some of these mistakes. Let’s change that.

In my journey of learning how to speak English, I found myself on a totally unexpected realization when one day I called up my home and had to leave a message for my husband. When I arrived at home and listened to my message, I was surprised to find out my voice mail was impossible to understand! My pronunciation/accent was so heavy it sounded like everything but English 😭 So, I enlisted the services of a speech pathologist specializing in accents. She gave me some exercises to soften the accent and improve my pronunciation. Reading aloud everyday was key and provided most needed practice. I noticed how people stopped asking to repeat myself, and as a result, my confidence grew and although aware of my grammar mistakes, still the fact that people could understand me, gave me the encouragement to keep practicing. Practice does make perfect (almost). My advise to those living in any English speaking country is, make friends with whom you have to speak in English, do not hang out with your compatriots only and stay in your comfort zone. The only way to speak in English is by talking to others in that language.

This is one of the best lessons I have found on youtube. First thing thanks for that. Same set of mistakes were with me as well back in those days. Then I got few tough love and sowed a layer of seeds to cultivate good habits in me. Those are, daily dedication, practice speaking with office coleagues, learn through mistakes, 15 minutes reading time everyday etc. all of these seemed challenging at start but I felt a change in me over the time. That drove me to a stage where I could talk confidently at work. I have a way to go. Thanks for your fantastic ideas.

I’ve been living in the US for 11 years and yet I still have a hard time speaking English fluently. The last part of the message really hit me! About the job promotion, my manager asked me if I want to be a PIC/supervisor and I said no, my problem is, I get stock , I can’t find the right word and my coworkers and I still speaks our native language but I guess 5-10mins a day will make a difference! Thank you for the encouragement! 🙏🏼🙋🏻‍♀️

I have often made the mistake of not creating time to listen to materials that will help me improve my speaking skills but I have had a paradigm shift just listening to you today. Henceforth, I will make out time daily no matter how little to listen to pod casts and other materials I can find online that will aid me in my journey to English fluency. Also, I will form the habit of practicing the art of speaking either with myself or a friend. Thank you Annemarrie for the positive impact you are making on people who struggle to express themselves fluently in English across the globe. Please keep it up.

Thank you so much for your tips. I love the video. My big problem was, I start comparing myself with my co-workers, who can speak much better than me. It made me feel unconfident when we were in training together. I've been learning English by myself for a very long time and I'm still not fluent in English. I set the goal of becoming fluent in English and integrate English into my lifestyle. I wish I could practice my English with someone instead of watching videos and reading books. I totally agree with you - I have to start USING and SPEAKING English. I was happy to understand everything that you told and wish someday I would speak fluent English without feeling unconfident and stuck.

I was making these mistakes for several years and got frustrated but I have met with a teacher who showed to move my english to the next step. This video lists some of the mistakes I was making and some I'm still making. In fact, I am less and less practicing and was looking for a way to practice at least once a week with english native speakers. I am looking to join some groups or blogs where I can do that. At the end, i just wanted to thank you for the good quality and pertinence of your videos.

Greetings from Brazil!! I am an English teacher for at least 6 years. During my time learning english I had many and big frustrations. I spent hours studying hard. My first school was in India, then three years later I went to the USA for a year. When I came back to Brazil in 2013 I decided to teach but it has not been easy. I feel that my pronunciation is still not good. My students asked me to speak like an American native but my accent is like a British native. Also, your words comparing how to ride a bike with speaking english made me cry, due to I have no one else that teach me how to ride a bike and I have never ride a bike, yet. Yes, I had a hard time learning English. I started when I was 29 and now I am 44. Thank you for sharing. I hope I can be a good teacher.

your advice today is really helpful. thank you so much for that. I've been living in the us over 10years but I still have difficulty having conversation with native speakers. the words doesn't come out of my mouth and I find myself frustrated in panic. i'm more like introvert I know this can't be any good excuse. everything is up to us. like you said. I really want to enjoy going through kind of obstacles I face everyday not struggling with them. be optimistic, be positive, looking up at the bright side all the time. my dear friends here in the same trouble let's keep taking a step one by one side by side. of course it takes time but we know it's worthy. let's dream of ourselves speaking English fluently, confidently, naturally in the near future. we are getting closer to our goal. god bless you all

In your website, there are two cells. The first one is to enter my name and the other is to enter my email. When I enter all required things and go down to Get it now button , I don't get anything . What is the problem?

Hi there. I am one of those making lot of mistakes specially when taking. When I am in a conversation, lot of times it happens that I don’t find the right words for expressing what I need to say. English is not my native language but Spanish. Thanks for those great advice you give in the videos. You have one more follower starting now.

Love the video! I have a lot of work to do. I get so nervous when talking in front of people . Once I start talking fast, that 's a sign that I'm nervous. I will definitely breathe more and start practicing every single day.

I actually have three ways of reading any materials. One is there are times that I read silently, second is I read the material by speaking it and not looking to anything around me, and last but not least is I read aloud the material and imagining myself discussing the content to someone else. Doing these ways speeds up the process of developing my confidence in speaking the english language. By the way, I'm only using the phone of my mother and this is not my google account. Lol 😂

Absolutely you are right professor speaking Engkish or even any language is just like practicing how to ride a bike for the first time. It is just mechnical practices and here you don't have to study more vocabularies and grammar. But only you have to be confident and oractice.

Thank you, teacher! Thanks a million! I'm grateful. I've loved this video! I've found my problem: the speaking! I read, I listen, I watched, but I haven't had talking English! For years, I thought that I must study my grammatical books "forever". I changed my ways of studying recently, choosing books for watching videos and listening pod casts and I've improved a bit. But I've continued don't speak! While I write this message, I speak myself and I'll sites for speaking with other people! Thanks! I'm sorry for the big message, but I'm excited about the insight that you video give me. I'm sorry for my mistakes too. But I've lost the fair of mistaking. I'll try. Like an student of cycling! Thanks an I subscribed your channel!
