Things in BYPASS and you've only realised that you wasn't effecting anything has happened so many times to me... but those times were the time that told me to constantly take a step back and make sure I am hearing right. I'm a very hard worker so it quite alien to me to take a break, but with music, I learned to take 15 minutes every hour by the minimum ... often it's 15 minutes every 30 minutes. Just so my ears are frequently fresh... it's costs me time, but, it's so important to the process that it's cost saving. Much like working too hard to make more money can lead to you spending more money to be happy so doesn't help in the end.

This was so insightful, I have watched Streaky before and respect him a lot, but I had no idea about his history and how down-to-earth he is... he really opened up about his beginnings and his process which was so refreshing, thoroughly enjoyed this one guys and as always learned a thing or two..... thanks for another great podcast.

This was insightful. I’m sometimes to quick to judge someone due to their “shorts” which is a shame as I can see Streaky is an experienced and knowledgeable engineer. These interviews are great and it’s good to hear from British engineers as we often only hear about the ones in LA/USA etc.

I thought the same thing with the mixes... there's a big thing with a third person perspective... when your do your own stuff you get deafened by focusing on the detail after a while. You need someone to come along with fresh ears and say "vocal too loud and subs not there" to make you bring yourself back to the present with a song. I need this all the time. Having someone to do a quick listen and say what issues are jumping out for them is essential as they will not speak about tiny things, they will speak about the bigger things you've become completely deaf to.

lol Streaky love his honesty, Kevin Metcalf was a legendary mastering guy, Love it when he points out it’s not worth watching RU-vid cos there’s no pro’s on there , to 2 guys that make a living from talking gear & mixing ( not sure they have ever worked on any major releases) . Mixing is an art form, Streaky is right you can’t be a RU-vidr & be a mix or mastering engineer. Pro Mix & mastering engineers work everyday there’s no days off , unless there is no work. There’s no giving up work time for kids.

Sounds like you've missed the entire point of the podcast. The podcast is documenting our journey from transitioning from RU-vid to mixing full time. That's why we get engineers working full time on the podcast to discuss their journey and help us and others in the same boat as ourselves looking to turn it into a full time profession

Nice interview & insight! 👍 Had the opportunity to do a CD master at Soundmasters with Kevin Metcalfe as a mastering engineer in 2003, and... well let's say he wasn't the easiest mastering engineer to work with that I've ever met or worked with. Funny that Streaky (whom I well remember being there, too) would have a disagreement & split approx at that same time... 😉

I think the advice of high passing and mon-ing bass is a safe guard given to new people to then work to what is actually correct for a track... but, people teach those things without that context. It's a newbie safeguard but that is it. The advice should be to check "do I need to mono any bass parts of a mix?" and "Is there anything with so bad bass content I need to highpass?" rather than attacking an entire track with that advice... these are just questions to ask yoursel;f when you start when mixing, not ever for mastering... that should already be done to anything if it needs it. But the advice should also be that stereo bass can be better at times so just listen and think about everything and test it. You're never recreating the same track in music and if you are you'll going to have to do thing slightly differently anyway to get the same result.

If the Ivory is 80/90 percent close to the hardware, then where would other not as good hardware fall? Between the plugin and hardware or below the plugin if the plugins are so close?
@WorkingAudioTools
@WorkingAudioTools 9 месяцев назад
In eq's nearly all of the difference between hardware and plugin is in phase and L&R tolerances. That's about it
@Rhuggins
@Rhuggins 9 месяцев назад
I personally find analog eq (and compression) to have a very noticeable difference (of course), especially on a whole mix. Theres tons of comparison videos on youtube if you’re curious. Check out Audio Animals
@WorkingAudioTools
@WorkingAudioTools 9 месяцев назад
Tbh I've done that many comparison videos where people have failed my tests that I stopped caring. I've challenged a lot of analog purists who have took stabs at me to public blind tests on my channel and only 1 accepted. And I got acustica magenta bang on to his manley vari mu. Granted there is the odd piece of gear that you'll struggle to nail but in most cases Im pretty confident I'd get any analog buff to fail a blind test. If I've got the physical unit in front of me I know with doctor I can match the plugin to the point where I'd have people sweating 😂 Id actually argue that nearly 95% of analog vs digital shootouts are set up incorrectly in favour of the hardware due to sheer lazyness and bias
@johnbach2380
@johnbach2380 9 месяцев назад
Hardware vs. Software debate is dead. Even if there's a difference in isolated blind tests, the techniques and tastes of the mixer will olbiterate any of that 'extra depth', or 'texture' you think you hear. You get more depth with a volume knob and processing another version of a wav file and blending that in parallel then the 'percieved' depth you get from a hardware unit for instance.
