In this episode, Spencer Durrant walks you through the murky world of fly fishing next to tons of other anglers! The rules for crowded rivers are different than the etiquette you'd give on a small stream, and today, you'll learn three tips to make your experience on a crowded fishery that much better. In addition, Spencer also found two tips to help you catch more fish from these crowded fisheries.
As if that wasn't enough, you'll also hear about:
- Tips for streamer fishing in murky water
- Advice for buying waders
- Using tippet rings
- Over and underlining fly rods
- The best knot for attaching a fly to your leader

Great reminders. The etiquette is super poor in WV where they are few stocked trout and no one practices catch and release.

Another well thought out and delivered show, Spencer. Since you mentioned your history with tippet rings is very limited, I hope it's OK if I provide some insight. Primarily, tippet rings are used to extend the life of your leader, while it can be used as a double rig anchor point. Once your line reaches ~10 inches from initial taper point, you can tie on a tippet ring to the leader with a clinch knot. Then, tie on your desired length of the same size tippet to that ring with a clinch knot. This can greatly increase the life span of the leader. Once your fly, weights or indicator get too close to the ring for comfort, snip off the tippet from the ring and tie on more tippet. This also allows you to pre-tie several setups and easily change them out at the tippet ring. The most common complaint about tippet rings by some fly fisherman is that it makes a slight slap on the water surface when using a dry fly. They could be correct, or it could just be perception. Regarding the tippet rings being small and easily dropped, there is a pretty reliable solution. Most brands sell their tippet ring on a swivel, so they are secure and you can hook the swivel to something. TIP: Tie the leader line to the tippet ring while the ring is still on the swivel. Once tied, open the swivel, take that single ring off, close the swivel, then tie on the new tippet. LESSON LEARNED: Double check that you are tying your line to the ring that will come off the swivel first. If you accidentally tie it to the last one, you will be cutting and retying. Lastly, make sure you buy well machined tippet rings. The reason is that poorly machined tippet rings may have burrs on the ring that can damage your line. Any major brand rings will be smooth.

I love it! Thanks for adding the extra insight. I need to start using them more on my nymph rigs, I reckon.

Hey Spencer, I am 67 and been fishing a while I really enjoy the crew’s content. I have been following y’all not long after y’all started. And watched how y’all’s insights grew and how y’all developed and delivered the information. I wished y’all would have been around when I started. It would have shortened my learning curve. Any way, I am a big wing fan and mainly cook my own. Ok, most people call them flats but here true wing aficionados call them splits. As far as drinks I am a water and black coffee guy nothing else. Keep up the hard work most folks don’t know exactly how much goes into what y’all are doing. Again thanks, and what kind of person would eat a boneless wing 😵‍💫🤣🤣

67 and still wade fishing? You Sir are awesome. I am 59 and have been fishing since 8. It kills me to watch some 20 year old bouncing off rocks to get to a spot. Keep it up!

Nice thing about the Midwest (at least northern IL) nobody fly fishes around here. Most of the time I have the whole river to myself.

I am very fortunate that the places I go I usually have to myself. And I like it that way. That said, it's good to know etiquette.

I blame the guides for the over crowding. They have no qualms about taking bus loads of people to the Provo River and teaching them how to crowd the river.
@SpencerDurrant
@SpencerDurrant 5 месяцев назад
Yeah that's a tough topic...I don't blame the guides for trying to make a living, but the Provo is such a small river it's super easy for it to get crowded. That said, I know A TON of guides there, and they're all good about not crowding other anglers. It's a few bad apples in a bunch of superb ones that give it a bad perception, I think.

Good Video. Waders agreed what fits ypur needs best for the budget you have, But also which fits you the best. Knots - Davey or Double Davey ( I'm withTom) Rapala definetly on streamers but also tiny dry flies #22 and below. Short personal opinion from the UK, where we don't get, as much, overcrowding on Rivers, in England & Wales becuse majority of rivers are syndicates or members only. Yes there's days tickets available but these to are often limited in the number.. Smaller stillwaters again tend to be clubs and they limit their membership. Take care and keep the good videos coming. It's interesting to compare and contrast; looking at the similiarities but also the differences

Yeah, that's really interesting! I have a good friend who lives in Wales, so I've learned a bit about the fishing there. I think I might need to do an episode on the differences between fishing in the UK and US. Could be a fun topic.
@paulcarter5731
@paulcarter5731 5 месяцев назад
It's definitely compare and contrast! It can cost from £400 to well over a £1000 to join some clubs, that's a cost before you even get on the water. Let's not even mention the cost of a single day's Salmon fishing in Scotland where the overall chance of catching a fish is very low!

I just go somewhere else. I live 45 min from the San Juan tailwater and hardly ever go. too many great places I can go and be by myself.

Im here in Northeast Ohio. Steelhead country. And yes they are "real" steelhead. Covid has made the crowds SO much worse. A lot of older guys say it was the internet that did it and while I get their point, as long as you arent showing your exact location i dont mind for the simple fact that its a big part in how we learn new things. It took my dad and I forever to learn enough to regularely catch fish. Ànd its our favorite thing in the world now, and has helped our relationship during hard times...also, boneless wings are awesome. Sorry, but you can't shit on boneless wings then pretend like diet pop isn't sacrilegious.

The difference between an #8 line and a #5 line is only 4.5grams. Which isnt quite as much weight as a tablespoon of sugar. The real differences are the Rods. There is no such thing as a "true 5 weight" each rod manufactorer just makes up stuff based on how they "feel" when casting. My echo 5 weight is more like a 3 weight in than my Redington. My cheap walmart 5 weight is more flexible and responsive than my Cabela's 5 Weight. I just put a 16 dollar Maxcatch sink tip #8 line on my 7 weight Echo Streamer X rod after the 130dollar Rio sink tip started cracking and falling apart in 4 months of weekend fishing. I cannot tell a difference even after switching back and forth for ~20 hours of fishing it. The only way to tell if one line is going to work well for what you are doing is to ask the people who know, like the nerds over at this place called VFC =D or even Fly Fish Food, or whatever your local shop is called. Each rod is going to feel differently even VASTLY differently with the same line compared to another rod. Love ya faces =D
@SpencerDurrant

Yeah, it's crazy how much rods can differ. Thanks!!

@@SpencerDurrant going to have to get your rod and see how I like it. Currently testing one for cabelas, i really like it, but its more like an orvis or redington 6 weight. hah, i look like a crazy person when I go out fishing, i've brought as many as 6 rods all setup basically the same....lol. yeah i'm a bit adhd about fly fishing.
