For all the MacOS users out there, even though Canon doesn't officially support BigSur, it works! It might be just a case of Canon not updating their website to reflect the supported OS
Bro thank you! I have a T2i which is not listed on the list of cameras. I took your advice and downloaded the option for the T3i before completely giving up. It worked great!!
Found your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching it all, so good to get some new content! And while writing this comment you’ve already said two dad jokes😂Right on track!
I have tried EOS Webcam Utility with my EOS 700 D and a 24 mm EFS wide-angle lens. The video quality blows me away. It is like studio quality. I realized later that it is only 576p resolution. However, it looks a million times better than my PC's webcam in 720p resolution. Best of all, it's free. I couldn't be happier.
A good lens can really make such a difference, regardless of resolution, and you’ve got a great one. Even some of my old 8mm camcorders look pretty decent when adapted to a nice lens.
Great video. I actually got the cam link right before these utilities came out. So far I’m still happy I got the cam link. This entire video I’ve been distracted by how cool that clock is. It looks awesome!
I have been using the Fuji X webcam utility thing for almost a year now. Works great. I also use the Canon EOS 200 D. One tip - Get as long a cable as possible for ultimate lens choice.
This eos webcam utility works great with my canon t7. I use a nifty fifty lens for the bokeh but obviously this means I need to place the camera like 20+ feet away to get a good shot. So I've found that the other program "Canon EOS Utility" is a great addition, it lets me set the iso, aperture, frame rate, focus, literally everything I need to get a good looking shot, straight from my computer with a live video feed showing me the changes in real time
I would like to share my experience with Canon 700D (Camera -> EOS Util / ML -> OBS -> Other Apps) 1.EOS Utility is perfect clean hdmi, low temperature, battery last for 90-100mins (per 1x LP-E8) but low-resolution output 2.Magic Lantern via mini hdmi + capture card also perfect clean hdmi with more option/setting, drain the battery so fast and cause camera from 35 -> 54'C in 10 mins (ambient 31'C), battery last for 60 mins Personally, I went to choice 1 with battery grip (2x LP-E8) and video conference with my team 2hrs a day. Magic Lantern is better video quality it's not good as a still image but you will notice by comparing with EOS Utility but overheat is the main issue. If you living in a country like under 20'C it should no problem
I had previously used the Canon software with my RP. But the idea to try it with my old Rebel T4i..... brilliant! Works great! Giving new life to my back up camera. Now, if you just endow my T4i with bluetooth. Great video, great idea, thanks a bunch!
@@f0zfate Also, I've been able to use it with my Elgato capture card with an HDMI cable, but not directly with a USB connection to my PC to be able to use the EOS software, which is what I'm trying to use.
The Canon EOS 90D USB cable is not included with the camera purchase. Finding one is a bitch if you don't know what kind of cable it takes. Thanks for this, Tom. It was very helpful and just what we needed.
I'm 12 and I already did this... but I'm excited to see how I can livestream. Hopefully getting the ATEM Mini when I save up enough money from teaching other kids, I'm getting there!
The autofocus is slower because the processor is used to compress and send video over usb and not all resources are available for autofocus on some cameras you even get this when you record over hdmi.
Note that if using Webcam utility, you can only get 576p since USB 2.0 uncompressed only supports that quality throughout. If you want HD or 4k, gotta go with the capture card.
I've tested it with a 5dmk2 and 7dmk2, you can override the max record time by removing the recording media and disabling the auto shutoff timer. I've tested it and been able to stream for over 1 hour before the battery died. I assume with the wall power adapter it would run longer.
I am happy they made the utility...but, it is driving me nuts. I can't use anything extra or it will not work (bought a stream deck, but can't use it). Also can't use a cam link for a nicer quality stream which is a bummer. (Did I miss something there...can you somehow use a cam link while using the utility??) However, the biggest frustration... it constantly pops off while streaming, it's extremely inconsistent. I am saving for a Canon (the EOS-R ) so I won't have to use the utility. ;) Thanks for making this video!
It’s definitely inconsistent at times. The CamLink can be its own source, so you don’t need to use the Utility if you’ve got that (it should show up as its own source in whichever streaming/video app you’re using).
Tom Buck I tried using the cam link but was unable to get a clean out with it? (Had the auto focus box) I sent it back and used the utility instead. I am very new to all of this so I may have done something wrong when trying to use the cam link. Oye. I’ll look into it again. 😉
Thank you, Tom, I bought the Rode PSA1, and I really enjoy it! I had the Neewer IMPROVED arm before and it exploded lol. I really wanted the Rode PodMic but something I would love to see is the PodMic vs. Shure SM7B in rejecting noise in a very loud environment! Currently, my office is next to my HVAC room in the basement and it's loud. The Shure SM7B does an amazing job rejecting every background noise! but man ...the price tag is hefty. Gonna test it for 30 days. But I would love to see a comparison in loud environment between these two mics !
great video I had it working with my 60D about 3 weeks ago. I tried it 3 days ago and it does not work anymore. OBS just displays EOS webcam utility and nothing else. I know this video is 3 years old but it was working for me before. I did notice that the website has removed my camera from the support page but it was there like in your video.
I do have a sound panel in front of me and on the ceiling. Carpet on the floor helps too along with mic placement. I’m always experimenting to try and find ways to make it sound a little bit better.
Hi @Tom Buck. Thanks for sharing this. Did you have any issues with overheating when using EOS R for livestreaming? I am thinking to use it for virtual training which will run for four hours. Thanks heaps for replying Tom.
Another great video Tom! Question - we just paid for the year long subscription to Streamyard that allows us to stream in 1080p... if I understood what you said, does that mean we're not technically streaming in that resolution so we basically paid for an upgrade that isn't actually functional?? I think we could tell the difference before we switched from 720p to the 1080p plan but now I'm not sure anymore.
Hmm...this is a good point. I have a feeling Streamyard is upscaling the footage, so technically the stream is in 1080, but the input from the camera isn't. Your stuff always looks great though, and your graphics/titles are at full 1080 resolution since they're coming from Streamyard, so I still think it's worth it.
Hey Tom! - Great video. I currently I have an R6 and was wondering if you’ve heard of anyone using this specific camera as a webcam successfully? I’m trying to figure out what all I need to use it as a webcam
Is there a way to ensure that it doesn't run out of battery power via the USB-C itself? If there isn't, do I have to get a dummy battery? Which do you recommend? I use the canon R5.
I have a Fuji xs10 with a dummy battery and cam link for live streaming. Is it fine to keep the camera on even when not in use? Or it must be turned on/off manually every time? It’s such a hassle 😬
I spent an hour on help with Canon tech support and got a dead end. I have a Canon R5 and a MacBook Pro M1 from 2021. I was simply trying to use it for Zoom, and it needed this EOS Webcam Utility. The Canon R5 is recognized by macOS and works fine with EOS Utility 3 for live view, but the camera isn’t being detected by the EOS Webcam Utility Pro software. Despite trying multiple machines, cables, and troubleshooting steps, the camera won’t show as a video source in the webcam utility. Any ideas?
Great tutorial and thnx...my only dilemma w the Utility is that the video tends to lag and at times freeze in OBS and the sound never matches the actual video timeline. Seems to be still in Beta even though Cannon says its the latest and final build. In conclusion i still favor the elgato capture card.
Hi Tom, I managed to use my Canon 5DMII as a webcam with simply the mini USB cable and EOS webcam utility on my old MacBook pro that runs on Catalina. But it didn't work with the Mac Mini M1 that runs on Big Sur version 11.4. Thanks so much for this recommendation and for mentioning the different configurations possible, so I didn't give up until it worked on one of the computers! It was really worth trying!
@@tombuck Little update for those who own a 5DMII: the camera goes off and on every 30 min, despite turning OFF the Auto power off in the settings menu. It is still a great feature for recording short videos!
An extra thing from the Webcam Utility is that my Canon 40D works with the driver from the 60D. Sure it is 3:2, but still at least it is better than my laptop potato cam. Been using it for about 3 months now without problems. Not saying problems will arise, as the camera wasnt quite thought out with video in mind (using the sensor for an extended period of time). Also the quality is some 500ish-p, as it transfer via USB 2.0. But as said in the video, give it a shot, worst that can happen is nothing lol Amazing explanation and video!
I'm glad it's working! I think this is an awesome way to bring new life to older gear. I remember desperately wanting a 40D when they were new, but it was way out of my price range.
Another great video Mr Buck! Have you found additional lag when using webcam utility with Ecamm? It seems to be that way with me so I’ve uninstalled it for the time-being.
@@tombuck thanks so much for replying! You have quite the following now (well deserved) and many questions to get to. If I may make a request, i’ve spent a lot of time working out how best to use Ecamm in my Zoom teaching and would be really interested in a closer look at how you have things set up. I have done a couple of Live streams in the Ecamm community Facebook group on how I get around the low resolution virtual cam output etc, but as you are a veteran user I’m sure that there is a lot I can learn from your experiences with it.
Hello mate, is there any way I can use my Canon 500D as a webcam. I'm tired of trying everything and have no budget at this point to go for another one. Please help.
The 500D was so early in the world of DSLR video that I can't say if it'll work or not. But it's definitely worth downloading the app and giving it a try!
I now use Bandicam and Canon EOS webcam together to record from my Canon Rebel SL2. It looks good on the 24mm f/2.8 lens. I had to get a USB extension cable because it needs to be 6 feet away from my computer so the tripod isn't on top of me LOL. 540p on facebook, 480p on RU-vid. Maybe Canon will make it better but it still looks better than a webcam.
Hey Tom, With the Canon 5D Mark III I have black bars all around the corners of the picture (so that the virtual background is confused by that) - however the quality is great! When using the Sony A7C I have an awfully low resolution so that eventually a MacBook Air/ iPhone Webcam looks way better I guess eventually I will still need to use the ATEM Mini to make it look the best & the way I want to
Hi Tom, in my eyes, your videos have good color balance. Are you using any LUTs? I am using this M200 for streaming but I feel like I can add a LUT to make it look better.
Thank you! I don’t use a LUT, but I did make a Final Cut preset (I did a video about it a few weeks ago and you can download it for free at himynameistom.com/downloads). The biggest thing for me is getting the white balance and exposure right, then it’s easy to make some adjust,Mets to the color.
Hi, did you use an mini hdmi to usbc cable to go from canon to your macbook? I can't seem to find such a cable. Any advice on making that connection. I'm trying to use the 80D with a MacBook that only has usbc ports. Thanks.
Hi, so I'm using an EOS R with a plug & play RØDE Video Mic GO II. Trying to hook it up with EOS Webcam Utility to use on Zoom, FaceTime, and other video calls...two issues arise so far: On FaceTime, camera isn't recognized...not sure how to change it...I'm guessing EOS Webcame Utility isn't compatible with FaceTime because of Apple? Not the most important to be honest since I mostly use Zoom, but... On Zoom, I'm able to get clear video from my camera, but I'm not able to get my RØDE Video Mic GO II recognized as the audio source, when plugged into the camera...I was under the impression this was doable, but I might buy a second USB-C to USB-A cable to plug the mic directly into my laptop and activate it through RØDE Central or RØDE Connect...Does anyone have the same or a similar setup with similar issues? Any advice on either issue, and generally optimizing the efficiency of the EOS R with an external mic for video calls would be extremely appreciated. Thanks in advance
I've definitely found FaceTime to be picky with what it accepts as a camera input. Personally, I think the best thing to do in your situation would be to try out the elgato CamLink. You can run a mini HDMI to full HDMI cable from the camera the the CamLink, which WILL be selectable as a source in any application (including FaceTime). And because it's an HDMI signal, it's also selectable as an audio source. 👍 There are cheaper HDMI capture cards out there, but none are as reliable as the CamLink, so it's definitely worth the price.
@@tombuck- Thanks for the detailed reply. Good to know! I assumed wrong then about just grabbing a second USB cable and plugging the RØDE Video Mic GO II directly into my Macbook. (Tried it earlier this week on a family Zoom call without success)... I've been eyeing the Elgato CamLink for a while as a next step - multiple nearby secondhand vendors have them between €50 and €80. Guess I know what to ask for my holiday presents 👍
Works on my Rebel T5. Using OS Big Sur, so I was worried until I did a firmware update. I connected my ATEM Mini Pro and dragged the full page ZOOM output over to one of my four ATEM inputs. A little rough from a resolution point of view, but it works.
@@tombuck Do you think they'd ever consider moving it to usb 3.0? I believe I heard it was a limitation on the amount of data able to be transferred, and 3.0 is like 10 times as fast (10 times as much data... i think haha)
Nice Video! I use the Sony version and I use ZV-1 because it was smaller, and I don’t use it that much. Next week you should follow this up with lighting because good lighting help for than an expensive Camera or great lens! Oh and where did you get that cool tube clock? I want one!
Lighting yes! I've recently redone all my lighting, so I'll definitely have some videos about that. And my clock is a Nixie Tube clock from a company called Millclock. I love it.
Question: I bought myself a canon T7 DSLR and was curious if I used it to stream/record with, would it still stop recording after 30 minutes is up even though it’s connected by usb to my computer? Or would it only keep recording for however long you want if you use something like the elgato camlink? Long question but I was just curious. Thanks
I've recently got an ATEM Mini, after I saw your video about it... However, when using my Canon EOS750D Camera, I can't get rid of the focus box... Is there any way to get the EOS Webcam Utility Output to the ATEM Mini?
Using a R6. I'm getting the dreaded red X when I try to set it up as a capture device in OBS. I am running an older Mac Pro (on Big Sur) and using USB C to USB 3.0 cable. If I open up EOS Utility 3 it shows up for live view, so I know it's connecting. I have also tried to use this directly in Facebook to go live and it's the same red x. Is my USB cable bad?
That's strange since the R6 is so new, it should be working fine. You said that you're using the correct cable, but my instinct in these situations is to always start troubleshooting by swapping out the cable. Once I find one that works for sure I usually attach a little label to it so I never forget 😁
Dear Tom, thank you so much for this information! So there's no possibility to get a Clean HDMI from my Canon Eos m50 while using an Atem Mini? Because I would like to have two Camera Angles .....
The Webcam Utility will give a clean output on the M50, but it still won't be "clean" through the ATEM. Depending on your streaming software, you might be able to run another camera through the ATEM and then use the M50 as a second source via USB. 👍
@@tombuck Am I still able to switch with the Atem between the one Camera connected with the Atem and the other connected to the Pc and the streaming software (for example OBS) ? Or is this only possible within OBS ?
@@MaureensTV You can switch between those sources within OBS. I do this all the time in Ecamm Live and it works great. It's actually fun to have separate inputs since it allows you to create scenes in really cool and flexible ways that you can't do only with the ATEM.
Very constructive video. I have got one question. I wanted to do video reaction using OBS and my Canon M50. Do I need Cam Link (capture card) or do I need to download Eos webcam utility only ?
Hi Tom, Thank you for such great videos - I have one question: I have been using the Webcam Utility for sometime now. But, my 6D shuts down after 30 mins - and yes, it will wake up within seconds. But, for live streaming that auto shut off when I am speaking could be embarrassing. Do I need a camlink or another capture card to overcome this issue? Or am I missing something?
Hey John! That's interesting since the Webcam Utility should circumvent the auto shutoff function. I don't really have a clear cut solution, but you may want to double check that your camera has the most recent firmware installed, which may help make it more compatible with the app 🤔
@@tombuck I figured it out. 1. Make sure that there is no SD card in the camera. 2. Set the Auto Shut Off to 1 min. (I am serious one min. I had kept it at 30 min, then even set it to 'disable' - nothing worked). No idea how this 1 min thing worked out. I am just glad that it did.
I don’t really steam. I record talking videos and I’m currently using my Phone but want to upgrade to using my M50. Just not sure about recording and than saving my video. Where does the video get saved to? Would appreciate any help.
Great video, Tom! I've been using the Canon Webcam Utility app for turning one of my Canon cameras into a webcam. Been using the Canon Webcam app since last year when it was first released in beta version. Even though I have the official version for the past few months, I haven't really noticed any major changes, or I'm just too lazy to explore the extra features. I also have the Elgato CamLink 4K HDMI card from a year ago, but I barely touched it. It works fine, but I just haven't really haven't done any livestreaming like I thought I would.
Tom did you say this worked with your Mac Mini? I can't get the webcam utility to install on my 2015 MacBook air with os x el capitan 10.11.6. Do you know if there is a work around, or is it time for an upgrade?
It’s working fine with my Mac Mini. It should work with the 2015 if you install the El Capitan version 🤔 If all else fails, the elgato camlink is absolutely worth the price.
That's a common thing that can happen. You should be able to create an audio delay in whichever streaming software you're using to help everything sync up again.
That was really useful Tom! Thank very much for sharing 🙂 Will keep this in mind in case I need it in the future. The MacBook Pro Webcams are still 🥔 🥔🥔 Btw nice collab with Rafael Ludwig - enjoyed that also very much 😊
I have a Canon g15 powershot....can I use this for streaming or it’s too old?? Also I don’t think it has clean HDMI out I used the USB that came with the camera but when I plug into camera, the camera automatically turns off. (Although after 18 mins it does stop recording but I guess I can record on obs while I’m streaming?)
It's worth giving it a try! If it works with the Webcam Utility, it'll give you a clean output signal and will also stop the camera from powering off. 👍
@@tombuck Thank you for replying! I tried using the USB it came with but it doesn’t keep the camera on, I can’t turn the camera on when I plug the camera via USB into my PC. Do I have to buy a hdmi cable to link my camera to PC instead? Wouldn’t I need capture card..Camlink?
Anyone else try this and find that there is a lag in the video? Seems like a 1/2 second behind what is going on. Lips don't match my speech. Clap your hands - the video moves slower. Any solutions? Seems to be the Canon Webcam utility that's the issue.
This can happen when streaming and can usually be solved by adding an audio delay in whichever streaming software you’re using (if you’re using separate software). I use about a 5 second delay with Ecamm live.
@@tombuck Problem is that it's happening in live conversations in Zoom where I am doing coaching with a client. Not sure how to implement a 5 second delay in a conversation. Going to try an Elgado Cam Link to see if that resolves it and bypass the Canon Webcam Utility altogether. Thank you for your input.
This video one wk ago, would have saved me from buying a new m6mk2. The whole just download it for catalina.....didn't think of it. Now I know. Now I also have two cameras to start recording my podcast.
This is just the one that came with the camera. Some USB cables are only designed to supply power while others can transfer data, so if one isn't working try a few others if you have them.
I have a same problem with the new M1 macbook pro. Zoom doesn’t find the webcam utility. Everything is updated. Maybe we need support for Big Sur. 🤔 🤞🏻
LOL....don't ever expect that from Canon. Well not until about a decade after Panasonic, Sony, Fuji and a few other have had theirs out in the marketplace. And even then there will be some caveat like you can do 240 fps but only at 720p and 10 bit recording footage will for some strange reason be cropped.
Pun Markers: 0:19 - 6/10 good start 0:57 - 9/10 2:57 - 5/10 good try lol 6:35 - 5/10 another good try lol My experience with Webcam Utility is similar to your wife's, sometimes it didn't work and I had to play around disconnecting the USB a few times until it picked it up properly. Good video and good puns.
Well finaly it"s not working, I can see ma cam in the EOS Utility ??? in was working on the TV, but not on my computer as a web cam. Am using Filmora and it cant see the cam, but telling me that EOS utility recognise it !! ?? any tips ? Merci
I wish I had a clear solution, but the app can definitely be hit or miss. The first thing to try is swapping out the USB cable you're using (not all cables are created equal, and some are better suited for data transfer). Sometimes just trying out different cables until one works will solve the problem. If not, then the most reliable option would be to stick with using an HDMI capture card like the elgato CamLink.
I’m using the utility but it stops after 30 minutes. I have to power off the camera and back on again. I’ve tried everything I can think of and I can’t find anything online about this issue. You mentioned something quickly about a 30 min shut off, but I’m still not clear how to stop it from happening. I’m plugged in to power, not battery. It’s like the utility needs to be reset. (EOS 7D) any help appreciated.
The camera itself shouldn't shut off when connected via USB, but it will stop recording after 30 minutes. You might need to double check that your camera has the most recent firmware installed- that might help fix the issue.
9:01 is the low resolution only specific for the canon camera that you are using and the port it provides? As my 6D Mark II is usb 2.0 but if you use the EOS RP that has type C would you have the choice of a larger resolution in the software for that?
@@tombuck that's good to know so I don't have to fork out money for another camera just for streaming. My 6D MKII will do for now. Yeah you can't beat something when it is free.
thought that i need eos utility with live view open (that cost a lot of cpu ) or buy a capture card camlink for use my canon m50 markii as webcamera. With this canon webcam utility and just only usb my obs recognize it as webcamera. Whats the differences between the first methods with the last one?
