A playthrough of Capcom's 1992 versus-fighter for the Super Nintendo, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior.
Played through with Ken on the hardest difficulty level with no losses for the best possible ending.
I loved this game soooo much when it came out.
Everytime we went to the mall my parents would have to drag me away from the various demo kiosks in different stores that were all invariably playing the new SNES Street Fighter game. I don't remember very many games ever generating so much hype and fanfare on release, and though it's easy to dismiss it now in light of the changes made to the series over the past thirty years, this was the game that defined the genre in the modern sense. It took everything and put it together in a way that had never been done before, and most of its trappings are still with us in today's fancy 3D equivalents.
And it was on a Super Nintendo. And it was the first 16-megabit cart released in America, which spoke volumes. Nintendo was pretty much guaranteed to publish their own game on a new, upgraded cart size before letting the third-party developers have at it, but they understood the importance of the release for their brand, and in keeping it exclusive to the SNES, SF2 gave Nintendo a huge advantage over Sega at the time.
It looked incredible - not arcade-perfect, but it might as well have been in 1992. Nobody cared that the characters were smaller or that animation frames had been cut. It looked and felt close enough to the game that people waited in long lines to play. This was close enough of a facsimile that we were all stunned - the latest arcade blockbuster could actually be played at home.
I actually won a copy of this cart (even though I already had gotten it for Christmas) in a Nintendo Power contest! I got a call from the magazine, and about four months later a bubble-envelope showed up in the mail. I was confused when I opened it because the label was white and said "Not for Resale" across the top. It was SF2 sure enough, but I thought it was a special copy at the time, not just a media or store demo copy like I figured out later. It was neat to win, even if it just meant that my sister could use it so she would stop ganking my copy of the game to play in her room.
This game itself was a revolution, and probably only sits behind Mario in terms of how many times it's been blatantly copied. Very good stuff.

When this first came out for SNES back in 1992, finding a copy to buy in stores or rent in Blockbuster was damn near close to impossible.
@rjcupid
@rjcupid Год назад
I second that. I had to wait months to be able to rent it and it was only because I was in the right place at the right time (it had just been returned). I remember SF2 and Final Fantasy III/VI were the two hardest SNES to find in/available to rent at video stores near me in that era. They were both impossible to find at their respective releases. Searching for them was fun though. Those were the days.

This game single-handedly won the console war in my eyes. For me, I would say Legend of Zelda Link To The Past and SF2 are the greatest SNES games. My friends and I played this game more than any other. Future versions may have improved certain elements, but for me this is still gaming perfection and the one we all played.
@Zaxares
@Zaxares Год назад
For me the greatest SNES game of all time is Chrono Trigger, but I agree that the two games you mentioned are top contenders as well. :) Super Mario World I think is the all-time best selling SNES cart, but honestly, SF2 is probably the one that solidified the win for the SNES vs Genesis in the 16-bit console wars.
@rjcupid
@rjcupid Год назад
@@Zaxares Chrono Trigger is definitely a hall of fame game. Super Mario World is also every bit as good as Zelda LTTP. I think those two games are the two I played the most in my lifetime. With the SNES there is no end to discussing masterpiece games because there are so many. Donkey Kong Country? Super Metroid? Final Fantasy II/IV, III/VI? Secret of Mana? Mega Man X?…And the list goes on and on and on. 😀

I kind of agree. I was a loyal Sega Genesis owner but for over 1 year I had to put up with my friends and classmates loving Street Fighter 2 and rubbing it in. Pre Mortal Kombat this was the most popular arcade game pretty much ever. Street Fighter 2 on Genesis when it did come out was awesome though.. But Seemed too late to win the console wars...

@@dbreiden83080The Genesis was amazing to behold early on (mostly before the SNES was released) and it had some shining moments, but the SNES was simply incredible. Especially later in it’s lifespan, the SNES threw one knockout punch after another with Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy III/VI, Chrono Trigger etc. I respect the Genesis a lot, but honestly the SNES was the ultimate console. That’s just my opinion though and from my life experience living through the era (I’m in my 40’s).

@@rjcupid The Sega downfall mostly had to do with a need to always be first in the marketplace. They were ahead of the curve with the Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn etc. But the competition would usually wait it out and put out a superior product. Sadly their last system The Dreamcast was their best system far and away they ever produced, but again Sega failed to read the market correctly. They did NOT know DVD was about to blow up. Once PS 2 had a DVD player it was game over for Sega in the hardware business.

This was the game I went with SNES for. I was a sports kid and cousin and best friend had Genesis and I loved the EA Sport games on Genesis but we moved and summer of 92 I spent with my older cousin a lot and he rented and first introduced me to Street Fighter 2. I was all set then. What a game. My parents who worked hard got me a SNES for my birthday but I felt bad SF2 was 69.99 at the time so I picked Turtles in Time as my first game since it was like 15 dollars cheaper and I'm glad I did because I still have that game too. Got SF2 for Christmas late 1992 and still have my copy to this day. Special to me. Getting rid of most of my videogames but keeping the 4-5 SNES games.

Street Fighter II hits differently on SNES. Partly because the cart was over $116 bucks new. Then dropped to like $79. Keep in mind this was 1992 dollars. They were trying to bank on the experience at home. It was like buying an arcade machine. It was amazing.

The Neo Geo experience was more faithful, but WAY more expensive 😁 and back in 1992 there were not so many options. Fatal Fury was out there, but wasn't a real good fighting game. The Big ones, Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters were distant in the horizon. So Street Fighter II for SNES did It good as an arcade experience at home back then.

"I joined Capcom in May of 1992 and was told about this arcade game that had been chewing quarters at an unprecedented rate, both in Japan and in the US. Capcom was planning to bring a home version of it to a new console which was about to hit the market called the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was my role to develop the packaging, advertising and overall business strategy for getting the game into consumer's hands. We launched the game in August of '92 and I remember sitting with my boss, Joe Morici, who told me we were going to be ordering 1.2 million units from Nintendo, which at that point was an unprecedented first order for any platform. Then we released Street Fighter II into the marketplace and we completely sold out within 72 hours! Being out of stock for two months while we waited for more cartridges from Nintendo was very hard, but it wasn't all that bad because it helped fuel the frenzy. People were desperate for the game and that just helped drive the demand and desire!" -- John Gillin, director of marketing (Capcom)

I remember seeing SF2 CE for the first time in arcade and it was a hacked version where Hadouken would spread and fill up the screen and Zangief's spinning clothsline move was the people's favourite as he would spin above the screen and when the shadow merged with the opponent then he would do piledriver, also fire used to come out Zangief's leg when doing that move. I didnt knew it was a hack back then.
@figment1988
@figment1988 Год назад
And while those hacks were interesting, Capcom hated them since they not only did the hacks cost them money, but the hadouken spamming (especially when you used the Jab speed Hadoukens to create a train of sorts) often destroyed the balance of the game which made it inanely one-sided for some. In response, not only did Capcom crack down on the bootleggers, but it also inspired the creation of Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting (a.k.a Street Fighter II Turbo) which was created by James Goddard who would later be known for creating Dee Jay.

The very first home version produced by Capcom was the SNES version of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, released on June 10, 1992 in Japan and in July in North America. This version introduced the 2-Player Versus Mode that allowed players to adjust their handicap and features a cheat code that allows two players to select the same character like in Champion Edition. Capcom released the "Capcom Power Stick Fighter", a joystick controller made specifically for the game that was backward-compatible with the original NES.

If they make another variation of this game, it should offer color swaps for stages in classic edition and new, and for enhanced version of this game, animated sky to night and day transition should be a treat to add. It can't be overstated how much of a hit this was. This version sold over 6 million copies! That's more than Champion Edition and SSF2 on the Genesis combined.

It sold me the SNES console, I saw it being played on the games master TV show on Thursday evening and when straight out and bought the console & Street Fighter 2 bundle on the Saturday.

@@davidbarlee4722 Its sold me on...buying a PC. Let me explain. SF2 did convince me that I wanted a SNES, but on the way to buying one we passed by a radio shack. In the window I saw a computer running Battle Chess. Suddenly I wanted that instead. Luck would have it that my uncle had a PC he was selling, so for about $350 I ended up with a tricked out, late model Tandy 1000!

I sometimes get the feeling that the poor sound conversions in Capcom's earlier SNES ports were why so many of their mid-90's SNES games used reverb.

Back in the early nineties, gamestores in Brazil usually had consoles for anyone to play paying a small fee, time limited. They were everywhere. Younger people have no idea how popular SF2 was. If one those stores had 10 consoles, 7 or 8 would be playing SF all day long. It was that popular. For a year NIntendo crushed Sega because of this game alone. I bet Sega executives arrived at Capcom not only bringing a truckload of money, but a small army of lawyers to prove to Capcom they could release a SF2 game on the Genesis and get away with it, because Sega would cover any legal fee they would possibly had with Nintendo exclusivity agreements. I also bet Capcom took Nintendo by the balls because, or they allowed multi-platform releases from then on, or that could affect Capcom's ability to launch future SF titles on Nintendo platforms. And the rest is history.

I like how the SNES version had better endings in the World Warrior & how each fighter said two things when the arcade version they said only one after winning

playing this game in the 90's as a kid exceeds being an astronaut, a pornstar , a billionaire etc.... just look at the graphics on balrogs stage , I pity anyone who never had that experience

Fighting games are amazing, but it's all thanks to this multi-cultural phenomenon. Something about the sound of the little fighter announcement screen I always thought was just magical.

Fun fact: If you try to play one of the Shadaloo bosses with a cheat modul (e.g. Action Replay), you get a black screen when the fight starts.

I played this every day for hours -nostalgia. But i had the japanese version - so weird to see that they changed the names: The end Boss is called Vega, the spanish guy is Balrog and the Boxer in Vegas name is Bison...

Why did Capcom, think it was a good idea, to change the color of Honda’s Stage? I love the original color!
