The “crazy lady” the first time around said “teach him (Spanian) how to eat properly”. Second time around she said “the way he is eating with his hands, it’s dirty” she is referring to the way he was eating the intestines 😂 It was hard to hear, but thats what I made of it. And the godfathers name is Nam Cam (ex South Viet soldier during the VN war), pretty much ran all the gambling houses, criminal networks etc. Pretty sure he was executed by the firing squad. I’ve heard stories of D4 being rough back then from my relos. But now its a airbnb hotspot for tourists and much safer as its super close to D1 (which is like the CBD of Saigon)

Although I wasn't in district 4 much, as a solo female travler I found Vietnam to be very safe. The people were really kind, a surprising amount of locals speak english. I felt like locals really looked out for me evem just walking down the street, when I first got to Ho Chi Minh city a lady on a scooter stopped me to tell me not to have my phone put or it will get swiped. I backpacked South to North Vietnam, some of the best food I ate was at random food stands. They will hustle you a bit if you are a tourist at the markets and such. Part of the culture is to haggle, but everything is so cheap for northerners anyways so I felt uncomfortable doing that lol.

The fried doughs, shaped like 2 sticks glueing together are popular for breakfast. They are great with dipping into pho, varieties of noodle soups & congee. The dough with the white rice cake in the filling is normally eaten by itself or filled with sticky rice. The rice cake is used as a filling in that dough is not traditionally eaten as such.

By the way as many here in oz know when one visits Bali or other south Asian countries there's the possibility of ' Bali Belly ' from street food and local water. did you experience any sort of stomach upset from the street foods ? I lived in Ho Chi Minh for 2 years, 1 year in District 2 and 1 year in District 4. It is much tamer than growing up in Penrith bruh. That dipping sauce for the Fresh Spring Rolls is Hoi Sin (Asian version of Aussie BBQ Sauce) with fresh Chili and peanuts. It is outstanding.

Viet Australian here just got back around 2 weeks ago, never expected to see you visit Vietnam haha 😁. District 4 used to be a gangsters haven but now its just like every other district in Saigon in terms of safety. You should visit Dalat, its a city up in the mountains, full hectic night markets and cuisines over there. If your still in Saigon and wanna shoot some real heavy guns and learn and explore real life war shit, go to the Cu Chi Tunnels. During the Vietnam War the underground tunnels was used by the Viet Cong where they lived and full had a society down underground. They used and placed booby traps and what not which killed a fk ton of Americans coming through their area, now its a tourist place but a lot of their shit still remains intact. You also have a option to shoot about 10 different types of guns there that Viet soldiers commonly used back then, AK’s, M60 Machine Gun, M16 etc etc kinda expensive but lad u got dat dosh 😂 Would make a sick video.

If you're back in D4 anytime soon you gotta visit Vinh Khanh street. A street full of late night seafood restaurants, good food and environment. Locals are super friendly which they'll most probably invite you to their table to drink with them .. I lived in D4 for 3 years until recently and never had any issues any time of day/night. D4 was dangerous over 10+ years ago however now it's one of the best late night district for food and beer. My favourite restaurant is called Oc Vu . It's usually the last restaurant open until 6am

This is why McDonald's and other Western fast food chains have generally failed in Vietnam. Look at the range and spectrum of food on just one street and all of it together was cheaper than a meal at Maccas in Sydney.

OMG, it's awesome seeing you in Vietnam, my home country. A little bit of context, district 4 used to be the most dangerous area in Ho Chi Minh city, where mafia and gang based and operated. However, I would say district 4 now is a safe area, mafia and gang already been cleared out like 10 years ago. It has become a diverse street food area, I would say they have the most delicious street foods with reasonable price there.

I live in District 4 and all the dangers and stories about District 4 are a thing of the past. It's a normal place like other places. In fact, every part of the city is dangerous but most of the time you just have to beware of purse or phone robberies. It does not always happen, at least not in the crowdy areas.

District 4 is not too bad. I saw some footage of District 9 once and that place was crazy. The locals looked out of this world 😂
