10 years later! This is a gem! I really wish the way he approached photography and thinking about it didn’t die out with the RU-vid street photographer.

Loved the story about the photograph he created of the woman in black near his house and how the photograph kept generating revenue. And how happy he was to have dinner with the young editor. + the story on the bus that won a prize. Good video!

Len Speier responds: You would not need a release under those circumstances UNLESS you used the image for Trade or Business, as in a commercial advertisement, for example. In New York State, the Civil Rights Law would require the written consent of the person being photographed - i.e., a Release.

Many successful street photographers shoot with big cameras. As always, it's less about the gear and more about your own attitude and what you project. Also, you really should not need to ask yourself why you're doing street photography. If you don't know why, if you're not passionately drawn to document people and street life ... well ... Though, I do believe one should do more than one genre or it does become boring and stale. This is true in everything.

As much as I hate to defend the paparazzi, They aren't being used for commercial purposes, the rag papers they work for are still considered editorial... If a picture a paparazzi took was used to sell lets say a car or something, then they would need a model release. For editorial or "fine art" purposes you don't need a release.

Why do you need a model release when you're shooting on a public street where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy?

How do you get a model release? Once you get the shot, the person is gone. Seems a bit strange.

always ask my self why do street photography and cant come with an answer feel silly when i am out and about taking photos although i like photography and many people are into street photograhy must admit there lots to photograph but does it not get a bit boring after a while One thing though you need for street photography is a small camera as a big camera attracts attention
@lammatt

i guess it depends on the law of your place. like in hongkong (where i am in); it's the person's responsibility to protect his own privacy... so in this sense...no you dont need a release shooting on a street.
