Honestly the lenses nowadays are all sharp enough to take amazing pictures with. Also the difference between 1.4 and 1.8 is negligible. People (me included) put way too much effort into finding the perfect cameras and lenses instead of improving their photography.

I purchased this lens 5 years back with my a7iii. The AF was terrible with that camera so I never used it much for the 1st 4 years to be honest. However, in the last 1 year, after upgrading to the a7iv, it is my most used street lens. The AF is far better, obviously because of the camera’s advanced tech. However, just like you, even I enjoy light weight gear more than ever. I am happy that you made this video, it will encourage a lot of people to try this ‘infamous’ lens!

The photo you took at 2:05 is phenomenal. I love this cinematic look. I recently bought a Fujifilm XC 35 F2 and thanks to you I wanna go out again to take photos and try out this lens.

Great video and shots. This is one lens that will always stay in my kit. Theres something about just bringing my A7C and my 50mm in a small fanny pack. Lightweight, sharp and the 1.8 for night, lowlight or portraits.

The photo at 9:13 is really magnificent! The complimentary colors are perfect. Even her obi is yellow and the shelf on the left is blue.

It is also a good example of the importance of cropping. The 1x1 aspect ratio is perfect for this scene.

Love this type of lens. I did a video on the Nikon 40mm f/2 myself recently for a similar reason - these small, lightweight, cheap lenses are so much better than you'd think, especially considering how poor they often were during the DSLR days. Feels like a bit of a renaissance of the great picture quality but affordable prime lenses of the 1970s.

Some amazing shots here! I had the 50mm but sold it because I couldn't handle the AF noise. Do you use anything for audio or is it just straight from camera? Video is A++ as always 👍
@adriensanguinetti
@adriensanguinetti 8 месяцев назад
Thanks! Audio is straight out of camera, I lock my focus almost every time before starting a video clip so I am not bothered with the AF noise

At the start you did well to capture so much quirky behaviour at that temple. what an unusual place. The second quarter started to show a lot more emotion and what felt like to me a lot of melancholy. I like the commentary in the middle as well, touching on the topic of lightweight/budget lenses. Second half you really bring your game with great subjects and interesting colors. You really told that shitty 50mm lens who's boss. well done sir. Thank you for vacuuming up all these sights and sounds for me to enjoy. You're killin it. That 12.21 picture wow. I need to get popcorn ready for the next one. Who needs to go to the movies when we can watch this stuff.

very underrated 50. But you can already think about viltrox because it has a much better structure and focusing system for a not much higher price

Nice shots. Does 50mm feel the most natural to you? Some of these shots definitely have that more intimate first person perspective that pull the viewer into a scene. I feel like I'm right there, looking at what I would naturally look at with some of these compositions. I really like the nostalgic style. It reminds me of those first HD handicams cams Sony brought out in the 80s, that became affordable in the 90s. I swear most Japanese indie movies used them, so this is the visual aesthetic I think of when I think of Japan. ✨

Also, I fully agree with the leaning towards lighter gear. I want to abandon the hybrid and instead bring a couple of dedicated specialty cameras. The GR in my waist pack for wide context and an interchangeable over my shoulder for a closer, more personal perspective. That way I have access to more versatility quickly. Where each camera has a particular focus. I think 28 and 40/50 is a great combo for this quick swap call of duty style of shooting. For the sensor sizes: I've come to the conclusion that generally from 40mm and up aps-c is perfectly fine, and from 85mm and up micro four-thirds is perfectly fine. It's hard to tell that you've shot on a smaller sensor. Ideally, I'd have a light 24f1.8 on a compact full frame like the a7CR, which gives me 35mm in aps-c crop mode, and then a teeny tiny Olympus Pen with the 45mm f1.8 in my pocket. The depth of field would be like a 90f4 which is pretty reasonable, you can do portraits without the ears or nose going out of focus. There's probably enough light gathering from the 1.8 apertures for night photography at lower ISO and faster shutter speeds, so I wouldn't need a dedicated night lens. That's my theory anyway. 😂

50mm feel very natural but I would say the focal length that is really showing what I see with my eye must be something around 35-45mm. Thanks for your comment, insightful as always :)

Was this entire video shot on the 50mm f1.8 as well? im under the impression it has a slightly noisy AF motor. Loved the photos u got out of this lens. These days everyones only looking only at GM lenses forgetting that the older FE50mms are still available. Might just have to pick one up after watching your video.
@adriensanguinetti

Yes it was, I almost always lock my focus when shooting video so I don't have the issue with the AF noise. Thanks for your comment

I love this lens myself, only downside is that it's noisy. Images are still very sharp and I love that it's very lightweight.

I came to the same conclusion Adrian, the 24-70 is too heavy for me, I ended up not taking it with me to places I travel to and relied on the iPhone. My back hurt when I carried my camera in camera bag. I just got myself the Sony fe 50mm f1.8 for portability.
