The issue was that at a construction site nearby, the workers dropped sheet materials from a height causing a very loud noise which spooked the horses, and subsequent demounting of riders.
See, we avoided doing anything stereotypical like the tourists mugging for the cameras when we were in London this past November for Guy Fawkes. They're doing their job, and look better at it than you do, leave 'em alone.

don't mean to be a dick, but the horses need to be trained up to tolerate the goings on in a city, even at the extremes. i realize that horses are naturally very flighty animals, which is all the more reason why they need to be desensitized to startling stimuli (firecrackers, etc.) in order to avoid such incidents. easier said than done - that's why some jobs are harder than others. it's obvious that the general care of the horses is excellent - they look great, fit and are well groomed, but i think that maybe there needs to be a bit of an augmentation to their desensitization/habituation training. also, i see the biting/kicking warning signs. the horses should definitely be expected to stand without such antics. as far as grabbing reins is concerned. i don't know why any random person would do such a thing, but i guess they do - stupid with a capital "S". with all of that said, things happen, i know, and i hope that all of those involved in this incident are fairing well.
The Queen was able to remain calm and seated riding side saddle when there was an incident - either some one shot at her or there was an explosion. She even turned to check on the guards behind her. The horses do need to be trained to expect noises, but these tourists in their face all day is nonsense.
@@KetowskiI once saw a documentary on these horses. If they dispensed with their service it would have huge economic ramifications because thousands of jobs depend on these horses entirely - breeders, grooms, trainers, stable managers, farriers, vets, horse dentists, the tack makers (and their suppliers), the nutritionists (and their suppliers) and the guards. I've probably forgotten a few others.
