String Theory! April 17/24 

How is it a waste if it gets someone into the instrument? My first teacher was a skilled musician but I had very little interest in learning scales. He would often tab out songs I liked and would teach me the parts. I have been in a successful band for twenty years now. If I hadn’t taken those early lessons, I most likely would have never progressed. Sometimes you just need a start. I learned a lot later on my own. I love this channel but sometimes the views are unnecessarily negative.

@@scottmoreau5630 It’s definitely not a waste if indeed it does get someone into an instrument but I’d estimate that few who pursue gimmicky schemes are actually interested in doing the work it takes to learn. Those who really want to learn to actually play will be serious enough to see through the gimmicks and won’t be afraid to put forth the effort to learn HOW to play and not just WHAT to parrot. I realize though, that some who fall for things like the bouncy-ball type courses might be inspired to go far beyond and pursue a life where they can make music when otherwise they might not have. I’m pretty cynical about gimmicks and I think JP is too. But it doesn’t mean there’s absolutely no value in them sometimes. Thanks for calling me out on it. I understand your point of view.

@@oldengineguy It’s very refreshing to have someone comment back in such a respectful way. You make some good points for sure and I do agree with the gimmick part. It’s far too easy to fool people these days with social media!
