Stripping a XJR1300 engine! Yamaha XJR 1300 Shoogly Shed Motors Happy New Year! Time to get right in to the nitty gritty of this bike build...starting with that famous 1300cc engine of pure muscle!
Just forget about that clutch. Install a Barnet full kit with coils in pressure plate and better frictions and discs. XJR original clutches divide in 2 types: The ones that already slip with full throttle and the ones that will slip in nearby future.
Yes been here too. Removing the head is a nightmare. Those 2 studs at the front seize solid. I in the end cut through one of the studs just above the head gasket with a junior hacksaw. The head went to a machine shop where the stud was removed and the area where the cut was made repaired. I replaced all the studs with stainless. Happy days.
Make a cardboard template for the case bolts with their numbers on it. Measure each bolt as you remove it and mark the template. You can then scan it and make it available for other in the future. Don't lose the rubber blanking cap for the end of the crank. The one for the XJ900 is NLA. Might want to research putting a new starter clutch in, it's a "must do" on the XJ900's. Just my 2c.
Thanks for the vid! I recently stripped one too and I struggled with the head too!! Same issue as yours, only the plastic sheathing on the head bolts had also disintegrated and I fought the good fight with them!! 3 hours of picking them out bit by bit with a scalpel and tweezers, oh the joys! Looking forward to the next one, cheers!
Great video again and very interesting. I do feel you should invest in a garage heater as you look frozen lol reminds me of when I go out and work in mine.
Awesome as always Euan. And now I have video to reference when I do mine this winter. Was thinking you could use letter stamps on the crankcase bolts so you know which one goes where?
How many miles on that engine Euan ? I’ve had 3 FJR1300’s. Same engine. I put 60k on one of them and it was fresh as the day I got it. Oil is cheaper than metal I was always told 👍
