Ditto. I'm 34 now and I remember barely anything from my high school classes. I've learned far more since graduating than I did to actually graduate. Then again, what little I do remember is from the teachers who actually wanted us to learn and understand the material so we could apply it to our lives instead of just memorize it for the exams. That's largely why I've learned more outside of school, too; it directly applies to my life instead of just being some random trivia.

Dargonhuman I'm 28 and I can barely remember my high school knowledge as well. Most of my teachers just gave us paperwork without any explanation on how to do the work. Some teachers are just too lazy to teach you the knowledge you need to succeed in the class. I remember more stuff in college than in highschool. 95% of people don't even apply any of the knowledge that they learned in Geometry to real life situations. I really feel like my high school was really setting us up to compete on Jeopardy or something.

The current high school model was designed at a time in the US where workers with strong trade skills like mining, ditch digging or factory line operators were in demand, so the ability to follow rote memorization and recitation of facts and figures were desirable. We haven't updated that model since then, despite the educational requirements for employment have changed having evolved to need a different model.

I think that is the norm not the exception. Looking back I don't understand why I stressed myself out back in HS. Nothing that was taught there affects me today.

+Makoto Yuki high school was worse. They make you wake up so darn early and stay so long! In university, you pick your classes, go in when you want, and for only a couple of hours. And the students are much more mature and civilized.

+MangaEater68 depends on what your major was, if you're an engineering major like myself university is way worse. In high school I was an A student and graduated in the top 20 of my class, here at college I study about 3 times as hard as i did in high school and i'm barely holding onto a C now in my 3rd year. I'm not in class as much as high school but the extra time is needed just for studying. And the people are not more mature or civilized, in many cases adults are even worse than teenagers. And you got to pick your classes? Most of the time I pray that there will be space in the classes I need and I end up going wherever I can get a seat. If you need Statics and the last class with space is at 7am you take it, cause every quarter after 1st year that you don't take statics is one more quarter before you graduate. The only classes that always have space are the ones that don't fulfill any requirements, which don't help you at all unless you really need units. I miss high school, I can't wait to get my degree cause I know work will be better than this.

Tristan Faulkner I hated High School: the education program moved at a snails pace so it was a stupid waste of time that cut into my reading time. So I didn't go to school most of the time, and I didn't bother doing any of the homework. I passed all my classes with the bare minimum I needed to pass. Now I'm in medical school, and I'm a member of the national honor society. You see, what makes high school absolutely HORRIBLE is the sleep deprivation during an age where you need a ton of sleep because your body and brain are growing. And to top it all off, the kids are freaking horrible. I'm sorry to hear the students you have met still act like immature high school brats. But university is WAY more accommodating. You can even do distance learning for many of the classes. I took statistics and it was easy. In fact, it was fun! Which is more than what I can say for high school math, which was a joke. Yes, some classes fill up quickly, so it's YOUR responsibility to register EARLY. And you can do it online, in the comfort of your home, on your own computer. Even if you don't get your pick, there are SEVERAL other time slots. AND if you REALLY want a certain time slot (like the 8pm class on a Tuesday with a specific teacher) you can ALWAYS get an override form. If you can get the professor to sign it, you'll be granted a seat in the class. And EVEN IF that doesn't work, you can STILL register for a class that's full and attend classes. You'll just be put on the wait-list. As soon as someone drops, you take their seat. Many people drop because they change their mind, or they are dropped for non-payment, financial aid issues, or for not following the rules.

Seriously college pay is to dang high.
