Next up in the stock plugin series, TriComp
Studio One offers plenty of options when it comes to dynamic processing. For a "can do it all" there is the standard Compressor. Want multiband? Multiband Dynamics has you covered.
If you're looking for something in between to work on your vocal bus, or any of your buses, TriComp is a great three band compressor, with relative compression controls, three attack settings and optional auto release.
Also built into this plugin is a mix control for easy parallel compression and the State Space analog saturation.

Tricomp is my favorite compressor I’ve ever used. I use pro eq for cutting, fat channel for eq bits and utility compression, and Tricomp brings up the end for parallel compression. That mix knob saves me from having to create another track. The saturation knob is heavy though, anything past .5 and you’re in no man’s land. Haha, that thing can get gnarly real fast, so I don’t use it a lot. The red light is killer fir saturation.

I agree. Especially on the saturation knob. Used at 1% or less it seems to add a nice detail in the high end without adding much gain.

Thanks Tim! I always got the basic gist of tricomp but it’s nice to know exactly how the high and low frequency knobs effect the processing.

I just wondered: what is this Tricomp about? And here's Tim Talks, who just released a video. What a synchronicity!

I’m a total newbie, so this might be dumb, but I was experimenting with serial compression on my Master Bus. Then I wondered - if two compressors sound good, what would THREE sound like? So I threw TriComp on there, as the 3rd of 3. I thought the result was fantastic! It gave everything a 3 dimensional sound, made all the different elements of the song pop out from one another. I think TriComp is a winner.

I’ve been mixing since 2001 and I think Tricomp might be my favorite digital mixer I’ve ever used. That saturation knob gets gnarly real quick though.

Whatever sounds good to you then go for it. On my live audio for a Livestream, I'm actually using 4 different compressors on my DAW, with all compressors full wet and stacked (series). I'm trying out a Waves H-Comp that I grabbed free, it's swapped in place of a Scheps Omni channel VCA style. I have a version of 1176 to LA-2A afterwards. Each of these three are doing about 3 dB gain reduction. Lastly for compression is my Pulsar Mu, that emulates the Manley Vari-Mu. Now this one I set to do more gain reduction to add its unique coloring and glue.

The old Tricomp had a saturation knob, it just doesn't benefit from the state space modeling. Great video! Tricomp is such a powerful tool yet so underrated. I use it for mixbus processing, the 3 band compression characteristic truly shines when affecting the entire mix.

Had to EQ alot of the low to mid range out of my guitars, they started to sound a bit thin. I was going to use another EQ but started messing around with compressing some of the high end using the Tricomp and got a decent result! Just brought the low end stuff through nicely!
@TimTalksAudio

What kind of music are you producing/mixing? Have you tried taming the low-mids of the guitars with the "Andy Sneap trick" with a multiband compressor?

Is the knob setting a ratio, or is it more like a vari-mu compressor where the ratio changes based on how hard it’s pushed?

There's too much colourisation with this though. Sometimes I only want to use the saturation. As soon as I turn the Tri Comp on it just adds unwanted brightness.

Excellent video on a not-so-understood plugin, thanks Tim. Question: Since there are only controls to carve out the lows and the highs, how and what effect does it have on the mid-frequencies?
@larrycavallucci3258
@larrycavallucci3258 2 года назад
Probably only use this on the Main Out. I noticed it does not show the AMT of reduction in the middle area, just the green wave length, which to me is very little help. Most of my own songs don't have that many tracks, maybe 12-13 normally, sometimes up to 15, and TWO of those are Toon Tracks' drums and keys tracks, and I dont even split out the drum tracks, but use only ONE track and treat it as the Drum Bus, because all the grooves for both of those modules of drums and keys are SO well recorded by REAL People, I only use some enhancement plugins on the drums, and usually only a Greg Wells' piano plugin on keys.

Can this Plugin also be used in Universal Control without Studio One? Reason is I'm looking to multiband compress our IEM mix during band practice and the standard compressors don't give me the freedom to do what I'd like in the individual stereo AUX mixes.

The High Freq control goes to 12K not 10K as stated in the audio.

Hoping to learn about Tricomp, and this did help a bit, but I have to ask an obvious question here. The guy in the video refers to three bands of compression, but there's only two (low and high). This isn't addressed in the video.
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 года назад
The low control sets where the low frequencies stop, so 20hz- the number set by low. Same thing for the highs, the number set all the way up to 20khz. The third band is everything between the two number sets. So as an example, 20-300hz could be the lows, 300-10k, would be the mids, and 10k-20k would be the top and third set! Hope that helps. If not let me know and I can make a follow up video.

@@TimTalksAudio Thank you Tim. That makes sense. I don't know, perhaps you can edit this just to add a written comment explaining that on the video. That would help others who have the same question I did. I don't think it's worth making a follow-up video, but I appreciate the suggestion. Thanks again.

Tim, I have a newb ? For ya. When adding a plug in (reverb for ex) Will it automatically give me a certain amount, or do I set everything? Making any sence?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 года назад
Studio one is pretty smart. If you create a send for your channels to a bus or fox channel, then load a reverb on that bus/fx, it will know to set the mix control to 100% wet. If you load a reverb onto a channel directly, it will load it with a blended mix control that you can then set to your liking!
@DeltaWhiskeyBravo13579
@DeltaWhiskeyBravo13579 Год назад
These plug-ins have a default setting that loads right from the start. Whichever reverb or other plug-in it is, it'll be set to do something as soon as you drag it onto the channel. From there, you can change presets or the settings as you see fit. You can edit that default if you find a setting you feel you might need frequently. Or you can save your edited versions with whatever name you'd like as a separate preset.
