Advertisement on RU-vid, in my opinion, is too intrusive, too boring, or too long. People don't care about ads that keep a have a static theme or a catchy phrase. People want to be entertained. Think about how Terry Cruise on Old Spice is hilarious or Dean Winters as Mayhem for the AllState commercials. I use both products now and I loved their commercials so much I sought them out on RU-vid so I could watch all the variants. If the advertisement is comedic, entertaining, or enjoyable to watch, viewers will be less likely to skip the ads. So why isn't this something that's sought out more often?
@akaianc
@akaianc 7 лет назад
Probably because of how difficult it is to come up with ideas that are both amusing/interesting and also give enough information about your product for people to understand what it is and how it works. There's a fine line between a commercial being funny and it having almost nothing to do with what's actually being advertised, and the goal of advertising is for companies to get people to not only want to use their products, but also to understand what they're actually offering. Having one but not the other just misses the point, so it's just easier to play it safe and include the info about the product without taking the risk of trying to add humor to it.
@TheAgentTexas

Just give us a reason to want to watch the ad. The obvious ways to do this is to have good humor in the ad. What if ads themselves became entertaining.
@TheAgentTexas
@TheAgentTexas 7 лет назад
I would say that there are ways other than being humorous, but they might be harder to think of.
@pom_odoro

It's hard to make something funny. It's easy to make something memorable. That's why so many ads suck, because the greatest amount of people remember them, either the ones it's targeted towards (who find it funny) or those who are bothered by it (who remember it just because of that). It's like making a bad movie, it has to be really shitty for people to actually start to like it again (like The Room or Sharknado).

The audience needs more entertaining ads. Something more eye-catching, something that is more related to our interests. Although it isn't the advertiser's fault and more of google's algorithm and user profiles - most ads nowadays are stale and boring. Make something that pops, we're on youtube for entertainment - not to sit through a 30-second advertisement talking about the pros of your product.

1. If your ad doesn't get to the point in 10 seconds, it has failed as an advertisement 2. Nobody is trying to watch 30 second ads on RU-vid. Not now, not ever. They're actually the reason people get adblock. 3. Make the ad interesting, don't just try to make your product look more interesting than it really is because everyone can see through it

Make your ads 5 minutes long, but let me skip after 5 seconds. If your ad is well done, I will watch the 5 minutes regardless and maybe consider your product. Have me sit through 30 seconds of awful ads against my will, I will go out of my way to avoid your product.
@dallinorr6929
@dallinorr6929 7 лет назад
I absolutely agree with this. If I can see or feel in the first 5 seconds, usually via quality and premise, that an intro ad is setting up for a bigger story (eg. 2-5 mins, or even 10 mins rather than some cheeky, annoyingly self-aware 30 second video), then, and only then, does my curiosity have any chance at being piqued.
@FrozenThai

Agreed, though 5 min is a bit long. If i am forced to watch an ad that is just a bit too long and/or the product is uninteresting, i just open another tab or can straight up skip the video entirely.

This is the Work environment i would love to work in. One of the main reason i watch these videos and enjoy Corridor Videos is the fact that you guys are coworkers and best friends in one, and you have a system where you are more of a club instead of a Working environment. You mix fun and work together, and i could see myself looking foreword to work for 12 hours straight just because I would be surrounded by people like this.
@Jaximillion1

@Sam and Niko - Jake, they should find a way to make the ads more engaging, because one big reason why I skip them is because they're boring and feature fake emotions for selling the product. By more engaging, I don't mean interactive, although that would be cool, but I mean, speak directly to the viewer. Break that 4th wall! Change it up. It's like an elevator speech, except instead of having 30-90 seconds, you have 5 seconds before that Skip button comes up to get my attention. That's what I'm looking for.

I always liked the idea of contests; buying some number of food products (cereal or chips) to win a gadget like a commemorative flash drive or speaker, or participating in large but realistic sweepstakes (like the Mass Effect voice acting contest. I didn't really like Mass Effect but I learned more about the story from the contest and am interested now.) but the products have to be tangible and relatable too. Storytime: back in 2009, the Star Trek reboot was coming out (and my family loves Star Trek) and they had a deal with Kellogg's for merch for box tops. My mom and I had a potluck coming up and we decided, because of the prizes, to buy over 8 boxes of cereal that day to make marshmallow treats. I got a starfleet flash drive and a captain's shirt out of it, as well as great memories with my mom making all those marshmallow treats.

I think this channel sets a good example for Sponsored content within the video. Keeps it cool. Casual and relaxed. Not overly forced and what not. As for Ad's that youtube pushes before/after/during videos. Keep them at the End. Gives me a good time to get up. get a few things / stretch as they play. Before or during just pisses me off and pushed ad blockers more, and is one of the current reasons i use them.

All we want are good ads that are short and clear and funny. We dont want ads that are silly or boring. If you want ads to be watched entirely, make them awesome. For example, smallest empire, an ad made by corridor digital, is one of the only advertisements I watched entirely because it is really good. Also, if someone could tell google to correct it's ad algorithm so we're not getting as much junk ads anymore, that'd be wonderful!

The only thing that keeps me watching is when the first 5 seconds catch me. The latest Lego Batman ad... Perfect first 5 seconds I watched the whole thing in the end. So kept short: make the first 5 seconds count!
@PSNRadicalHighway
@PSNRadicalHighway 7 лет назад
One of the really smart things i dont see enough with ads is when the first 5 seconds is used to give a brief introduction of the the next 25 seconds (assuming its a 30 second ad). For example i think it eould be newt for the ad to communicate that i am going to watch a trailer for Star Wars 8 in 3D coming in 2018 within the first 5 seconds. This way, assuming i have never seen the product/service before. I can decide whether or not i should skip it based on if the product/service shown to me in the first 5 seconds actually appeals to me. It's simply more convenient. Thanks dude!

I can think of only 3-4 times in my life, any online ad made me click on it and look further into it. The key difference in those ads was that it managed to instill confidence in me about the product through unbridled honesty. Just portray your product realistically because, the more perfect you make your product seem to be, the more I think you are trying to hide. The consumer knows that nothing is perfect, they just want to be confident about what they are buying. Being entertaining will bring me in, but honesty will sell me something.

Instead of creating ads that are 30 seconds, that are ultimately skipped after only 5 (or worse, they are not skippable at all). Create ads that are only 5 seconds to begin with. it'll save costs because you don't have to create a 30 second ad, you don't have to pay for a 30 second ad spot and people won't be mad at the company for placing an un-skipable 30 second ad. It's 2017, i don't need to see more than 5 seconds of Nike, to remember that they exist and that i like their shoes.

i think the best way to sell a product is to see our favorite youtubers utilize it and incorporate it into their fun lives. watching regular ads are boring and only appeal to a specific audience but if you specifically place these ads with youtubers they appeal to their audience so as long those products being used are amazing and utilized well in their videos. take aperture for example it is being subtly used yet not subtly and it's shown to be a great product on the sam and niko channel and corridor digital channel.

My favorite kind of ads are the 6 second ones. It doesn't bug the user at all, and the advertiser can find a catchy, quick way to get their point across. Ideal spots for them could be in the middle of a video, if a mid-runtime ad is necessary.

Most advertisements on RU-vid do not (within the first five seconds) hold our interest. In order to craft a successful advertisement, it *has* to stand out, to make us want to see more, within the first five seconds. If it fails to do this, most of us will simply press "continue to video", and forget the advertisement altogether. Since we do have the power to skip forward to the content we wish to watch (as opposed to traditional television), the commercial needs to be well done. A short story that leaves us wanting more.

About Ads: I have an Adblocker installed, but I have a whitelist for YT. As far as internet advertisements go, RU-vid ads are some of the most tolerable IMO. One thing that should maybe happen (or already does?) is that there shouldn't be pre-roll video ads for videos under 1 minute or so. If a 30 second unskippable ad played before a 1 minute video, that would just fee weird. From: A small youtuber whose YT revenue comes solely from google advertisements. In all I think the thing that appeals most to youtube audiences is transparency. One of the unique things that online creators/influencers have over other forms of media is their viewer's trust. Creators tend to have very honest relationships with their audiences, and when a brand tells a creator they aren't allowed to say something or that they have to act a certain way, it erodes trust, which I think is underrated by brands as one of the most valuable commodities creators have.

I do not enjoy seeing ads directly from companies, like the ones before videos, but when it comes to sponsorships in videos, I can sometimes enjoy watching who ever i am talking about it. Letting the creator do something fun with a sponsorship is much more enjoyable than having a straight up ad thrown in your face. I dont know the actors in those ads, but when it comes to sponsorships, 9 times out of 10 I feel like I know who is talking to me. With that said, if the sponsor gives a set script they have to follow, its extremely obvious and no longer has my attention. Let the creator make it their own, there is a reason people watch these creators! We enjoy that creators work, and if they make an ad, in the style of their previous work, I might actually enjoy it!!

Your ad should stick. It should impress me the first time I see. Seeing 1 ad 100 times makes me hate the product, not the other way around. Yet if it catches my eye the first time (first impressions people!) I am probably way more likely to click/look it up etc.

I'll admit I use adblocker, but in a perfect world, I wouldn't. I *want* to be sold something. But notice I say I want to be SOLD something. I want to hear about a new product I might use or a sale on something I already planned on buying. Nothing an advertiser does is going to change my opinion on, say, Coke Vs Pepsi. I already know which I like and even if I liked one company better, what I buy still depends on my preference. The problem also exists in a lack of variety. I see an ad once or twice and it makes me laugh/ want to try the product, and I remember it. I see the same thing six times in an hour and I still remember it, but I remember it along with a visceral, negative feeling associated with it. That is *not* what an advertiser wants. The thing is, the biggest problems with YT ads are not the advertiser's fault, it's in the distribution. Engagement can come from the unexpected, or from giving us new information. But when we see the same things over and over, you lose those and what is left is just obnoxious. Especially if you are using odd sounds or repetitive patterns that I can pick out even when I'm not paying attention.The things in advertiser's wheelhouse for grabbing attention work against them after a very short time. So, that was definitely ramble-y, but the TL;DR: give us things that encourage us to get your product, and don't do it too much. Diminishing returns and all that.

I love that HP OMEN X ad that I'm getting all the time. No idea why. I think its just well made, great timing and hits all the right notes even though I would never buy the product. I always watch it till the end. Almost makes up for all those shitty MMO ads.

I'd rather see ads in the videos rather than from ad networks. The reason I use an ad blocker to to protect my computer from viruses. Ad networks basically route your computer to different ads, which could be hosted on a whole list of different servers, and that leads to the possibility of being tracked or potential viruses from said servers. Ad blockers provide privacy and security. I'm happy to watch an ad, and one way to do that is to have a company sponsor a creator rather than have ads served from ad networks.

Tailor the ads more to the creator than the viewer so I'd someone clicks on a video about say filmmaking, make it a related ad based on the video and the creators kind of content, NOT on the consumes viewing habits.

Here's my problem with ads, and some solutions. 1. They're too repetitive. I don't mind sitting through a thirty second ad to help pay a channel I enjoy, but if I am forced to watch the same ad over twice a day, then there is a problem. We know your product, we see what you're trying to sell, but we only see one point. Change it up. 2. They try too hard. Some advertisements try to hard to be funny, they go out of their way to force a laugh that most of the time doesn't even happen. Try dry humour instead, do something that will make me snort or laugh under my breath instead of making me cringe cringe. (The hello Moto ad is a perfect example of an ad that tries way too hard) 3. They don't try enough. I know, ironic, but sometimes your ads think that they are good because they're simple. No. Simple doesn't mean good, it often means boring and a waste of time. There's a little space in between too much and too little, shoot for that area. Think comedians like Louis CK or Dave Chapelle. Their jokes aren't forced and are easy to understand. Hire them to make an ad, they know what the people want. (The allstate car ad is an ad that doesn't try enough and is just, bad. Look up Lil Dicky's spotify condom ad, simple and effective, aim for things like that) 3. Refocus your demographics. The audience for the majority of youtube is the youth, young people under 25 that are somewhat educated. We're the generation that grew up on youtube, so cater to us instead. Small kids can't afford to buy the items youre selling, but guess what, we can. The people who were there at the time that youtube started, roughly 10 years ago, are now for the main part college kids or recent college graduates. Hire us to come up with better ads, and cater to us instead. 4. You have roughly 5 seconds to capture my attention before I click out of the ad. You better catch my attention by then. Hire the advertisement team behind Old Spice to help you. They begin their ads in the strangest of ways, but without revealing anything about what they're selling or their brand. And it's effective. 5. Instead of ads before a video, why don't you just go straight to the RU-vidrs, or to the famous ones. I have never been convinced to buy an item because I saw an ad for it, but when I see a RU-vidr demo the item, or talk about it, either in a good or bad way, then I will consider buying it. If I only hear the pro's of an item though, I will not like the item because I don't know the flaws. Give your items to channels like Unbox Therapy or behind the scenes channels, ask them to give an honest review of your item, laying out all the pro's and con's. Also, why not go to actual celebrities that we like, or artists. For example, if J Cole said he'd prefer a coke over pepsi, well guess what, I'm gonna buy a damn coke, that's for sure. I'm not talking about Kim Kardashian or fake people like that, go to who the youth like. I'm talking about Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper, Selena Gomez, younger, better people. Just to recap what I said/TLDR: Hire actual young people to come up with ideas, as you should be catering to the young generation. Make ads smart, funny, catchy, but not obviously try hard -good luck with that- and try to not make ads at all but instead pay channels to give their honest reviews, even if that means destroying your company. -Louie Lapat. My main issue with ads would be the video ads that have REALLY HIGH VOLUME TO MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU'RE LISTENING TO THE AD. They just come up kind of out of nowhere and then blow your eardrums out if you're wearing headphones, which tons of people do. Just keep the volume levels down a bit on the ads (or at least at reasonable levels); if we're interested in the service or product, we'll watch the ad. We're a lot less likely to look at a product favorably if the way it was brought to our attention was by making us temporarily deaf.

With the ads being cancelable after 5 sec, they should either be super eye catching within the first few seconds, or completely be only 5 seconds long. Some of the most moving or relatable ads i've seen, have only been 5-10 seconds long. Clean and simple, but with a strong message. I think that's the key. or else most people will just skip the ad, and watch the content that they originally would.

I'm 100% ok with ads. I think that sponsored videos and branded videos are the only ones that have ever gotten me interested in a product, I have purchased power tools, energy drinks, camera and audio gear and even cars because of reviews and opinions expressed by people on youtube. Some of these videos are branded and sponsored some are not. I use Ryobi power tools and drive a Subaru because of Mighty Car Mods, I think they are sponsored by ryobi but I don't think they are sponsored by Subaru. Over sexualized ads are horrible, Mobil apps seem to be advertising using porn models now and that is NOT COOL for a few reasons, 1. sometimes I'm watching youtube with friends or my children and that is just beyond awkward and makes me click back and not even wait for the skip add button. 2, it makes me want to look at hot chicks and not play your stupid game anyway so I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve. 3, go home mobil strike your trying to hard.

One of the biggest problems I have with advertising is that some of them are incredibly loud. I mean, REALLY loud, for some reason, specifically car ads, but others too. I don't mind watching ads on videos, since it's basically an income for the people I like to watch. But obnoxiously oud ads tick me off. Anyhow, keep up the good work !!! Long time fan !

I never watch ads. But if they have a good realisation, humor, or are entertaining in a way, I'll watch 'em. Take a look at the Game Grumps' ads, they are little creative and humoristic sketches that always makes me laugh. And I love it.

I will say my favorite add are the miller high life ads. Simple, they just say "hey our product is good go try it" with some nice backing music... and really short. Like, 5 seconds maybe? the other variation is about 10. That short length is really good. Just getting the idea across convincingly under 10 (max 15) seconds is really good, yeah.

I saw a *VERY HIGHLY PLEASING* (sorry for the double highlight^^) ad a few weeks ago. I'm in Belgium, but I can assure you that ads like that would be good anywhere. It was an ad for McDonalds, a new burger thingy. All the info was neatly organized around the center and it was simply 5 seconds of silence with two hands putting a burger in said center. 5 seconds was a good point, but the silence was the main seller. What I truly despise about ads on RU-vid is that, even for ones I like, after a while, the simple first few seconds of music/noise disgust me, 'cause I heard them so many times. 30 seconds ads without skip are the worst on that matter, and I rather prefer F5ing the page than sitting through those. But that McDonalds one, it was perfect. Longer than 5 seconds is possible, adding music is possible. It's the silence at the start that matters! You don't need ultra-aggressive music popping people's hears, despite what old studies said. One is good, twice still works, 10 times is limit, 50 times is damaging your brand. Build-up the sound as much as you build-up a catch-phrase.
