O this episode: The WWF's business is better than ever but their biggest star is on the sidelines and the PTC is forcing the WWF to change their "Attitude." Val is no longer a porn star, the Goodfather doesn't even like hoes, the Rock is in politics, and Chyna is the Intercontinental Champion? Join us for an interesting ride through the WWF in 2000 as we discuss Shane being Shane, Kane losing his mask, Tazz wrestling Lawler, a thong stinkface match, Angle making out with Stephanie, and a badass TLC match!
Breakdown
5:33 - Bruce opens a beer and Conrad says, “I like it. I like it.”
7:40 - Bruce tells a nice short story about when Blue Meanie got “THE CALL” to join WWF.
10:40 - Conrad sets the scene by describing the wrestling scene in 2000.
18:38 - Bruce and Conrad discuss legal shenanigans related to WWF switching from the USA network to TNN.
28:55 - Conrad and Bruce talk about Big Show’s attitude at the time. He was out of shape and not putting in the effort that others were. He also fell asleep during several production meetings.
31:30 - Bruce and Conrad describe an incident with Lillian Garcia and management. Also, WWF in politics, Donna Goldsmith, a dodgy episode of “Walker Texas Ranger” based on a wrestling accident, and Jericho’s wedding (Bruce wasn’t invited L).
45:40 - Talking about Taz joining the WWF. When he arrived, he had to adapt to the WWF style of wrestling. He could no longer be a slow-moving suplex machine. Also, he was relentlessly ribbed by others backstage for taking things wayyyyyy too seriously.
53:10 - Steve Austin gets news that he can return to WWE a few weeks before Summer Slam. Also, more hilarity about Big Show being out of shape. There’s also a great story about Brock Lesnar and Krispy Kreme doughnuts!
1:03:35 - Rumor and Innuendo about WCW wrestlers inquiring about jumping ship to the WWF in the face of the AOL Time Warner merger and Radio WWF. Also, a great description of the McMahon family dynamic and Just Joe! HE’S JUST JOE, PAL!
1:14:00 - Summerslam 2000! We’re FINALLY here! Bruce and Conrad describe the way WWF promoted the event with wrestlers appearing on MTV and SNL.
1:20:20 - Information on the opening video package, as well as a discussion about elaborate PPV sets, as well as how many signs there were in the audience compared to today.
1:27:00 Match #1: Right to Censor (Stevie Richards, Bull Buchannon and the Goodfather) VS Rikishi and Too Cool. Scottie 2 Hottie. Great info on Scottie 2 Hottie!
1:37:48 - Conrad describes the current Kurt Angle storyline in WWF where Kurt gives Stephanie some gold medal kisses when she is passed out, as well as how the focus seems to be on this storyline instead of the world title.
1:41:20- Match #2: X-Pac VS Road Dogg. Description about DX after the split, Road Dogg being over like Grover and the origin/idea of the phrase “X-Pac Heat”
1:43:23- Backstory on Match #3 with Eddie Gurrero and Chyna VS Val Venis and Trish Stratus with the Intercontinental Championship on the line.
1:51:39- More info about current storyline between Stephanie, HHH and Angle. Also, Rumor and innuendo about Mideon’s Naked Gimmick
1:54:20- Burning Question: Is Kurt Angle a Hottie, or a Hunk?
1:56:10- Match #4: Jerry Lawler VS Taz. Build up, more description about Taz’s transition from ECW to WWF. The storyline involves JR, and there’s a magical candy dish.
2:05:00- After Bruce says “VANILLA TITTIES. EVERYBODY LOVES CHOCOLATE TITTIES”, Conrad and Bruce talk about Steve Blackman, leading into match #5 (Steve Blackman VS Shane McMahon).
2:15:25- Match #6: Chris Benoit VS Chris Jericho in a 2 out of 3 falls match.
2:18:47- Match #7: Tag Team TLC match: Edge + Christian, The Dudley Boyz and the Hardys. HIGHLY recommended match. Bruce expresses his concerns with these types of matches.
2:24:00- Match #8: 2000 MOTY: Kat and Al Snow VS Terri Runnels and Perry Saturn in a thong stink-face match. Conrad says the word “butthole” a lot, and I can’t stop laughing. “Talk me through this butthole match”, says Conrad as he corpses. Also, DEEP CROTCH SLAMS!
2:30:55- Match #9: Undertaker VS Kane. Not too much to say about this. Kane gets his mask ripped off!
2:33:44-More HHH VS Angle storyline leading to Match #10: HHH VS The Rock VS Kurt Angle. When Kurt gets knocked out early in the match, shenanigans ensue.
2:43:40- Rumor and Innuendo about Chris Cretski and his role in WWF creative.

The problem with the 2 out of 3 falls is that a normal one fall match between these two would go for 15 mins. But as soon as there is a 2 out of 3 falls the Survivor Series effect sets in. Wrestlers get pinned in a 1/4 of the time and only requires half the physicality brought to them to be pinned compared to a normal one fall bout.

@@blueblur2329 98 was wild, but I think 97 was even crazier, it was RAW for a lack of a better term. In 98, especially late 98, you could really see some overproduction show through, which isn't a good thing.
@blueblur2329
@blueblur2329 3 года назад
@@RealAlphaDrum Yeah it was raw but it was also inconsistent especially on the WWF side. Unless you were a die hard wrestling/WWF fan a lot of those Raw shows are difficult to watch especially since they were working things out and figuring out what worked. WCW in 97 was clearly the better show and it wasn't even close. While the WWF had some interesting storylines none of them were touching the NWO storyline. Not to mention WCW's roster was much better than the WWF. 98 is when the gap was closed and was the year you could legitimately argue which show was better. WWF had the better storylines in 98 while WCW had the better roster. There was legit competition that year which is why 98 was the best year in wrestling.

HHH, John Cena, RKO, Stephanie McMahon can all go thank themselves for making wrestling unwatchable shit.

I watched the match, I don't see the spot Kurt is talking about at 2:37:00 where he says HHH was going to hit Kurt with a sledgehammer and he put his hand on Kurt's head to make sure Kurt ducked so he could hit Rock with the sledgehammer. The first 10 minutes of the match, Rock wasn't even in the match, he was in the back. The only time a sledgehammer is played with all three of them in the ring is at the end where Kurt has it, HHH is about to attack him, but ducks and hits Stephanie instead, Kurt then hits HHH with the hammer.

At 1st it looked real but when HHH runs over to the medical personnel to stop them from taking him out of the arena just to punch him, that's when I began to think it's a work. Especially when they cut to backstage and showed Stephanie telling him to go back out there and help her husband. I didn't think they would actually send him back out there if he seriously had a concussion. Foley the next night on Raw said that was the best Summerslam ever and having only seen 96, 97,98 and 99. This Summerslam was one of the most unrated Summerslam in history. I cant believe PTC was trying to change the WWE. Those people have too much time on the hands. Chyna winning the WWE Interconential Championship was awesome. Although, I wished she didnt beat Trish to win it. That was weird. TLC kicked ass. Undertaker and Kane did great with what they had to work with. Now it makes sense why that was thrown together at the last minute.

I've been watching the entire Monday Night War era for the past year and am currently on the year 2000. Just finished watching this show and as far as I can tell this show was the best show I had watched for the year 2000 so far. The TLC match was insane, watching the crowd react to Kane's unmasking was also great plus main event where Kurt suffered a concussion only made things more interesting. Foley the next night on Raw said that was the best Summerslam ever and having only seen 96, 97,98 and 99. I have to agree.
@GorditoCrunch343
@GorditoCrunch343 4 года назад
@@blueblur2329 The TLC match was by far the best thing on there. I never disliked the show but I think if you look at it compared to some of the other PPVs that year like Fully Loaded and Royal Rumble it fell short to me. The main event was helped by the hot crowd but Angle getting concussed ruined it for me since they were definitely pushing him the most again HHH. Rock kinda felt like an afterthought in the match tbh. I respect your opinion though. Maybe you'll also like Summerslam 2001, that show was pretty good too despite all the Invasion stuff.
@blueblur2329
@blueblur2329 4 года назад
@@GorditoCrunch343 Well I'm not a traditional hardcore wrestling fan of today who's all about the matches. To me I like story and characters more than anything else. With that said, I can appreciate a good match like the Bret Hart V Steve Austin match which told a really good story. Now I previously watched the Fully Loaded ppv and the thing that bothered me there is I didn't really think the storylines going into those 3 main events weren't really that strong. The strongest story of the 3 main events were HHH V Jericho followed by Rock V Benoit then Undertaker V Angle. For this ppv I thought the storylines were a bit stronger. Taker and Kane was clearly just thrown together but once Taker started taking Kane's mask off you became intrigued to whether Kane would actually be unmasked. Rock didn't have a storyline but I thought the Kurt V HHH storyline was very strong. It definitely would of been better if Kurt was in the match more but given the circumstances I thought the Rock and HHH did a pretty good job and like I said before I couldn't tell if it was real or not so I was on the edge of my seat watching what was gonna happen. Somebody online gave me wrong info and told me Kurt was gonna win at this Summerslam so I didn't really know what to expect. I couldn't watch these ppv's as a kid so for me this is 1st time watch through. I also think that a lot of the lower card guys got better storylines for this ppv as well. I've noticed ever since Russo left in late 99 that a lot of the mid card talents storylines suffered as they were no longer really fleshed out which is surprising since I'm also watching WCW 2000 right now and seeing how awful of a job he's done with them. I'm surprised that 2000 isn't really as great as I remember it being. For starters, so far I've noticed that HHH actually got more storylines and TV time than the Rock which to me is strange considering Rock was way more over. Rock's booking is a little bit baffling especially around this time where he just isn't getting much story or TV time when everyone's come to see him. Sorry for the long response.
@GorditoCrunch343
@GorditoCrunch343 4 года назад
@@blueblur2329 Yeah, the Fully Loaded PPV was a case of them trying to give the upper midcard guys a spot to see if they can hang in the main event but I agree that the storylines themselves weren't anything to write home about. It's a shame that Jericho never got a proper push after that because he was easily the most over face on the roster behind The Rock in that period. Both Jericho and The Rock were booked pretty poorly, looking back. You're completely on point with the midcard storylines evaporating once Russo left, it made the shows feel very incomplete and a lot of focus on TV was given to HHH and the whole McMahon-Helmsley stuff. It's one of the biggest reasons why my interest started dying down in 2000, it became too top-heavy again after years of variety. Luckily the tag division was always out to steal the show on PPVs and Summerslam 2000 was no exception. I think the year 2000 is a bit overrated myself. It's still good, but the weekly TV was getting a little stale and it wasn't as exciting/unpredictable as 97-99 in my opinion. You're almost about to reach the point where Austin returns, so that shakes up the show in a big way but until 2001 it's a bit of a slog before they start ramping it up for the build to Wrestlemania 17.
@tomseville1057
@tomseville1057 4 года назад
Kind of weird that there would be a debate around whether or not he was a hunk or a hottie when he kissed a barely competent woman on the lips, but that's 2000 booking for you. Also, X-Pac's "mule kick" was a low blow, therefore not a clean win, and Road Dogg was SO OVER in 2000 that there was a boring chant during a sub-five-minute match.

@2:37:52 We knew this even back then don't listen to fatso here. Muhammed Ali having Parkinson's was viewed as due to his boxing and the term "punch drunk" was a term from long ago. The only reason this got big is because the NFL was "shocked" to learn helmets don't stop your brain inside your skull. Notice other than boxing most of these sports didn't have these issues until steroid usage got big. As for wrestling, almost all of the early deaths are related to drug usage almost exclusively muscle relaxers and pain killers. That's not because of the occasional chair shot, it's because most of the "fake" sport is real, the moves have become far more flashy compared to the old days, the grueling road schedule, and the shitty way WWE sets the standard for paying their employees. Basically they work themselves to death and rather than take the proper time to heal like any other sport they work through it. In the NFL you pull a tendon you're out a couple of games at least, WWE just has you wrap it up and keep going. But yes let's all act like it's all about concussions so we can grandstand and ignore the real cause like we're fucking boomers.

@1:51:40 I'm sure that's what Mr. Perfect wanted to be remembered eternally as the 2nd best even in the years when you had people like HBK and Bret hard winning the World Title. The IC title is an insult to people like him and Razor because it's just a reminder they weren't allowed to move up. Plus the IC belt is more associated with Honky Tonk Man if you wanna talk 80s guys. I don't get the issue with letting Chyna win if she had became a better wrestler because she was physically bigger than some of the guys including Eddie. World title wise she was too small. On the other side it would have been really unbelievable that Trish, Lita, and Ivory could beat Chyna as Women's Champ. I see her issues with not wanting to fight the girls. The other ladies weren't doing steroids like Chyna.

@1:16:00 In fairness that IS what wrestling is, short stories with one or two memorable spots in the ring. As far as long term story telling they're just too reckless a business for that. They still feel they need to tour and literally wrestle almost daily which is more than any sport or actor gig out there which in turn leads to injuries, drug addiction, and early death. Russo was right for what wrestling is you need shock value and Stephanie clearly followed that path until 2008 minus shoving her damn midcard husband into everything long after he should have faded away. HHH should have been top tier more along the lines of a Kane or Big Show, he's there but he doesn't always need the fucking title the majority of the year. If they want to do Breaking Bad/Game of Thrones level story telling they need to actually sit down and figure out a storyline, go with it, and don't grind the talent down to make 100k at some shit house show 5 days out of the week. Just stick to the two shows and I'd even consider tossing PPV for good as well. Become a TV show or stop fighting it and go back to being edgy. This bullshit "profitability" argument only makes sense because they must sell their show for virtually nothing to USA. Every other show on TV and sports are profitable and don't need to rely on underhanded network deals, making a boring show only advertisers want, or cooking their books. Yet WWE until the Fox deal still made the lionshare of their profit from live events. Otherwise we get what we have now WWE/AEW "story in the ring" aka this might as well be indie wrestling because no one can say anything shocking enough to warrant the mainstream wanting to watch a fake fight with bullshit rules and a nonexistent rank system.

@1:48:38 Ah continuing the IC is the "workhorse" myth as opposed to the stepping stone or the "you may make it yet" title. IWC always has good lies go look up the champs and tell me how many are truly workhorses and how many are just getting the title as a nod on their way to the World title? Other IC only champs (excluding tag belts and lesser titles): Rikishi, Ahmed Johnson, Marc Mero, Ken Shamrock, Albert, the Mountie. The workhorse is a myth based around who? Jericho, Benoit, Angle, Perfect, Hart, and HBK? Also the Hart, Perfect, HBK days are when they are mostly fighting jobbers on TV so how much of a workhorse is a squash match? Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart didn't put shit on the map from 1993--1996 we were not watching wrestling as a whole back then. It's like comparing CM Punk to Hulk Hogan or the Rock. Sure CM Punk is good and probably the biggest wrestler still in the ring but he is not mainstream famous.

Mike H I died when he did his impression of Dusty Rhodes with the comments. Specially when he says let me slide my booty into your nostrils.

Chyna could have been the greatest woman's champ of all time. But all she wanted to do was act like she was an equal performer, and she sucked. You should have just stayed stationary and dominated the woman's division, she really could've brought the women's division up. But wanted to act like she was a pro. You weren't.

Is it just me, or when Bruce does the Johnny Ace impression, he sounds like the Principal McVicker character from Beavis and Butt-Head?
