A lot of people that think the suburban dad uniform of t-shirt, cargo shorts, ball cap, and crocs/sandals/new balance are totally fine. That's berceuse there are not a lot of options for that body type. Self respect has a lot to do with not just your clothes but also not letting your body and health go and sometimes it is about talking crap about the guys that do make the effort. It's a lot easier to complain about other people's choices than to do something about your own.

Study after study prove that people feel better and perform better when they dress better. I love nice clothing. I don’t care for name brands, though I do own them. Yes, I welcome a compliment, but I dress for me. I love looking at myself in the mirror and liking what I see. Further, people who dress well look healthier and more youthful. I love looking at people in their 60s and 70s who dress well and thinking, “Yes, that’s what I want to look like when/if I make it to that age.”

Well said, couldn’t agree more. It’s self respect in my opinion. I’m thankful I have found your channel. I have started to make changes in my wardrobe selection. As a man in his late 50’s I realized I was not dressing my age. Keep up the great content for those of us that have realized they need help.

How you present yourself through your clothing is a DIRECT reflection on you. If you want respect, dress like you deserve it. If you don't care about your appearance, don't expect others to care all that much about you.

I have upped my dress code to make me feel better about myself. Being prepared to make an effort is a positive attribute that brings its own self reward that, hopefully, others will also notice. It doesn't have to be for the sole aim of attracting women.

I'm so glad you made this video! I'm a new subscriber learning how to help style my husband as I am also on a fashion sophistication journey myself. Your recent video had the dumbest comments from men basically saying, "screw women's opinions!" Yet these men are also the first to hate on women's appearance if they aren't dressed beautifully. 🙄

It stems from laziness. Why should I exercise why shouldn’t i eat 20 wings and a 12 pack why should i shower and shave etc. some people have pride in themselves and losers dont. Its also a symptom of the devolution of our society

I like your channel, and as a recently retired engineer I found it inspiring me to up my game when it came to clothes. I always liked to dress smartly, but with the usual conservative colours, grey, blue, and blacks. That has now changed, I recently had a wardrobe clearout and restock, and it felt great to restock and refresh. Another thing is I'm single, never married, and as with everything else I do in life I always dress for my own satisfaction, and what works for my age.

Nothing wrong with wanting to look good. You want to look like everyone else, buy some tees, jeans and athletic shoes and you're ready to go. One more thing: Why would anybody want to wear clothing with logos? Are you being compensated for being a walking billboard? Have a great week. MR. C

I completely agree. I try to be well groomed, and nicely dressed when I go out. I have ladies coming up, and striking up conversations. I had a much younger woman recently compliment me on my appearance, and cologne. The downside is the wife isn’t happy when I draw in attention from other females. There are times when a pair of cargo shorts , T-shirt and baseball is my attire, but those times I’m going to the local big box store to grab a few items.

The answer lies within the question...the same reason we rise and get out of bed each day, the same reason we eat when we feel hungry style and attraction are not a bother rather it's essential, so no matter what we drape our bodies in we have the self-determination to take on any of life's challenges!

There is a word for men who leave negative comments on a men's fashion channel - trolls. They are trying to build themselves up by bringing others down to their level. Ignore them like everyone else does.

HI John, there is saying in my language that translates to "Half man, half his clothing". This doesn't not just apply to men seeking a partner. A well dressed gentleman is also an indication of his self confidence and demonstrates his passion for representating himself to stand out of the ordinary. I always follow your advice on fashion, even though I think I know everything about Fashion, but always end up Learning "to dos" and "not to dos" from you videos. I think there is something to be said for *appearing* unconcerned with one's image - appearing to not try too hard. But that doesn't mean you actually shouldn't carr what you look like. P. S. Anyone who undermines the importance of style in attraction has probably never seen a woman in a gorgeous dress in real life. It's happened to me to know women who I thought looked unexceptional and have my jaw drop at the way they looked in very well-cut velvet dresses. I could hardly believe it was the same person I was looking at. It works the same way for us.

Can I request a video for what to wear at the gym or a dance class? When I go to a dance class I usually wear yoga pants and a standard T-shirt. But never happy with my look. And it’s somewhere I socialise a lot.

I've never understood people who watch videos geared to specific areas or genres and then complain about the content. It's like watching a shop with me video and then bitching that all they do is walk around and look at stuff.

I loved this one. I’m 5’5 and my wife is 5’11” and never dated someone short until me. One reason is that I am always focused on looking my best when I’m w Her. I often wait till she’s done getting dressed in order to pick out my outfit, that way I can make sure I’m dressed appropriate to what she’s wearing. Also you can’t complain about your partners look if you haven’t leveled up yourself.

Real men don't get angry about what other men are saying, wearing, living. I was going to say doing but that's way to broad and there are plenty of reasons to get angry about what people are doing, in the right context. When you dress nice you feel good. When you take care of yourself you feel good. If they want to talk sh.t and hate ya why the hell did they watch your videos. Most likely just to complain. The way I think about it is,,, if you won't take care of yourself, how the f do you plan on caring for anything outside of yourself. That is shown by people that don't take care of themselves getting angry at you, because, they just get pissed off that someone is calling them out on being lazy to themselves. Lol I only just found your videos yesterday so this is my opinion, with basically no background of your videos. I've watched maybe 15 because I just turned 41. 👍

People who get worked up about videos on how to dress are virtue signaling to others that they are especially "manly" or "independent." If they truly didn't care, they wouldn't watch or comment at all.

I do like to dress nicely, wear nice fragrances, stay in good shape, etc. But I’ve found that the less you mentally focus on doing things for approval (especially with women), the better off you are. You’re going to feel more fulfilled if what you’re doing is first and foremost about your own feelings about yourself.

The old saying goes: Dress how you wish to be addressed. It's about perception by those who see you when you step outside your house. Not just women. Your audience is over 40, and i bet a lot of them are very successful and while they may want to step up their style game, they are not necessarily motivated by pleasing women. If you put so much emphasis on this impressing women message, it starts to sound like a pick up artist's channel, and you will alienate a good portion of your audience.

I definitely care about my appearance and I often stand out from the rest of my peers. Being in the military, on off days the tendency for most is to go SUPER casual I.e crocs and sweatpants. The looks I get when I put on driving Mocs and jeans you’d think I was heading to the opera in full regalia

Of course you're completely right. I started noticing it about three years ago or so, every video regarding something that women like, be it clothes, shoes, haircuts, behaviors, etc., would get flooded with comments saying the same things, that men shouldn't care about women's opinions, that men should only do what they want, etc., which is really just an excuse to dress like an immature person, or behave in stupid ways. I see it as a reaction to the extreme levels of feminism that are pervasive through western societies and the women that also say the same thing, that a woman wanting to look good is just submitting to some ethereal patriarchy, that women shouldn't care about men's opinions, that men can't have an opinion on what women say, wear, or do, and so on. We're just living in a very toxic society in general right now, but we must recognize that we do things both for ourselves and for others. Men need women, women need men, and we should strive to be mature and present ourselves well in society, out of respect for ourselves and for others.

I think certainly where i live that very few care about their appearance (men & women) Very few seem to put the effort in especially in their daily lives! Such a shame to see how very few take pride in themselves these days!

When I look good I usually feel good. The only exception was when I had to wear a suit and tie to work all week. The nice clothes started to become irrelevant to my mood. When almost every guy on the metro is wearing a suit during rush hour, ppl start to look at other things as differentiators.

I approached a woman some months ago and of course I was interested in meeting her. The only reason she gave to accept going out some we meet each other was how I dressed…

Women dress for comfort instead of for style too! It also depends where you are in the country. If you are in Iowa it is different than you being in Manhattan. It's an age thing too. At a certain age, they just give up and figure that if a guy won't accept them being frumpy, having that "I give up" boy style hairdo, then those guys are not worth being with. That gives the guy the nod to look like they are always going to a BBQ in baggy shorts and a sweaty T-Shirt. Have you been to an airport anywhere in the country lately? Some people show up in their pajamas! I wish guys would put more of an effort into their appearance - shower, shave and look like they put an effort into their look. It tells the world they value themselves. Women would look and feel a lot better about themselves if they would put in that effort as well. The exception to this, is no matter what I am wearing, I insist on comfortable shoes for everyday dressing. My black Sketchers go with everything. They sell brown ones too! ( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)✌

It's pretty simple. If you believe you don't fall under the demographic or target audience this video is targeting, don't watch it. Also, try to be open-minded. Dismissing an idea just because it does not jive with your own way of thinking leads to mental arrogance.

You do a good job of elevating a man's appearance. If your critics don't like your channel, they would really have a hissy fit at gentleman's gazette channel 😅😅. A third men's clothing channel I like is real men real style. I'm a vendor at Costco in san Antonio. I notice people all day. I notice most of the sloppily dressed men are married😮 You're right when you say more respectable clothes aren't less comfortable. Actually, I've found a premium t shirt or an expensive shirt on sale are more comfortable than cheap shirts

Presentation is important. If a guy wants to look like a cowboy dress like a cowboy. Wanna look like a biker dress like a biker. How about a firefighter, dress like one. If a guy dresses like a trailer trasher then that's his look. Period. Savy?

Ironically, the ones that think men should not care about how they look etc are the same ones complaining that the guys that do care are getting more respect, attention, dates, promotions, jobs etc

Your attire for the occasion helps with self belief-dress well, feel well. I would much rather look at ease and confident (even if I’m not at the moment), than like a total schlep which screams “I’ve given up”. That doesn’t need to mean wearing a three piece suit to Costco. Have you ever seen James Bond look out of place? No, I didn’t think so.

I think that men don't have to care isn't outdated.... it never was true! Even in the Hippie times you have to wear Hippie Style😅... and in former times poor people don't have many choices. But in the old movies from the 40s to the 60s the men are well dressed... Cary Grant etc Even when don't find a first impression important you simply feel better when you know you look good. I think men who have this mindset that appearance not count find themselves in general as not goodlooking or in any way attractive and sadly had simply given up with this excuses

I am the only well dressed at work. I am the only one they ask to represent them at work in meetings, activities and with clients. I'm just a teacher. And ALL the women at work always tell my wife how good I look and how lucky she is. I'm just a regular Marine Veteran with a gut. But once I dress, the gut become invisible.

You should do a video on how to get stylish when you can't be bothered doing it yourself. I for one HATE clothes shopping with a passion. How to source a service that builds a stylish wardrobe for you. This is something I would use once a year every year. drop a few grand and get what feels like a whole new wardrobe for the coming year, every year.

I wear what the occasion calls for. If I'm at work, I wear my work uniform. If I want to go out, I wear what is appropriate for the occasion. If I want to just run to the store, I throw on whatever.

I agree personal image is important for your self confidence and over all attitude towards life. Although I believe dress codes are overated. I do not own formal clothing as I have no interest or time for such events. Also I believe the only person you should be trying to impress is yourself and no one else. Take care of yourself and everything will fall into place. Personnally if you have to make any kind of "effort" you're either doing it wrong or not doing the right thing at a particular moment.

I mean... wear what you want just don't complain later when society judges you and women don't pay any attention 🤷🏻‍♂️

Lose big logos, lose slogans, lose iconography on clothes. Dress better! Wear a collar, dress like an adult, not a child! Great video John. I try to think of dress like this: would I want to date a woman who dresses like a teenager, dresses slovenly, dresses like she does not care? No, that is not attractive to me. Great video John! It's too bad that most of these style of videos have the official opposition piping up, but I will say I've learned a ton about style from you and I now feel pretty confident in laying out clothes to wear for the day. Don't stop as I still get great tips from you as style is a mixture of being fluid of new trends and classic, and of course, mixing in seasonal colors and patterns. I used to be a T-shirt guy but I rarely wear one, Henleys and Duer chino shorts in a variety of colors have been my go to this summer, and I will say using the color wheel helps in getting the colors matched up!

YOURE MISSING THE BIG PICTURE HERE. Let me explain why men leave very negative comments on your channel, (and others) when the subject is about dressing to impress women. Today's women have so many expectations of men. Are they financially secure? What type of car do they own? Are they a high-value man? How a man should a treat woman despite the double standards. Today's men are fed up with women's high expectations, which are expected of men on a daily basis. So when men view videos about how they "should" dress to impress women, it really strikes a nerve. So please don't take it so personal.

TWO Cheap Trick 'thumbs up' on this!! I find most men that ignore style are just (no other way to put it..) lazy. They rely on the 'comfortable' excuse when they just are not willing to put in any effort. When I hear that in a conversation about style I always look at them and ask "Well then, do I look 'uncomfortable' to you??" ... Even my wife has noticed and complimented me on my choice of clothing. Especially when we're out in public and she notices how others look and treat me... and us.

My New boss asked me to play golf with him at our city course. The course manager took my money, told my boss he couldn't play because he was wearing a tee shirt, a noncollared shirt. We were disappointed. Luckily I found a golf shirt in my car. We were okay. That simple event affected me. Even my boss was turned away until he returned with proper attire.

It DOES matter what you wear and how you look and it’s about you own self respect as well as attracting women. Example: I was a police officer a few years ago, and I was in shape and kept my uniform neat (some others weren’t/didn’t). I have the right to remain silent about the details, but both elements had an effect, believe me. Now that I’m older and don’t rescue damsels in distress anymore, I still stay in shape and try to dress casually and not grungy. I have an excellent girlfriend and I try not to make her groan and roll her eyes at my wardrobe, so the no-logo t-shirt rule (thanks for that!) is in full effect except for my Cal Poly Dad shirt. I also go to a gym and have a lot of female friends (yoga chicks), who I treat politely and with a sense of humor. I get hugged a lot, and don’t think the Unabomber and his hoodie-look had many women friends, so let’s try what’s best for everyone.

I was thinking about this very subject while at work today. I live in a western state, very blue collar town, ag and ranch dominate industries. The cowboy/farm/ranch attire is prominent. Most folks here dress for their work, more stylish for offices, more practical for labor.John, since I discovered your channel, I have paid more attention to how I dress outside of work. I have also noticed the lack of care in appearance among both men and women when shopping at stores and at social events. I have taken steps to improve my wardrobe a few pieces at a time, the fit of my clothes, and even my shoes. I have mentioned before that I notice when I'm noticed, especially by the ladies. Even in my work, despite the company logo t-shirts and utilitarian pants and boots, I still take care to make sure I don't look lazy and without a sense of pride and confidence in my appearance. Keep up the good work, sir. Always appreciate it!

I have my own style and make my own purchases. When I walk out of my bedroom and my wife says “ that looks great on you” I have pleased her but mostly pleased myself.

John, on target as usual. Your points are correct from my vantage point (for what that's worth). I do have one question for you which is, do you think videos of this sort make any impression on those guys who don't give a damn about their appearance? All the excuses they present or simply covers for their feelings of inadequacy in some areas. I'm not sure that anything you say will dent the armor they've placed around themselves to try to protect their vulnerability. There's nothing unmanly about wanting to look good for yourself and those you love.

You are right on. It is time men upped their game in the dress department. I travelled with someone who constantly wore graphic t-shirts and sandals. His wife went appropriately dressed. I was embarrassed for him and his wife. No just about how you feel about yourself, it’s also about how much effort you put into your relationship with the outside world. North America’s men’s fashion is repressive. We are afraid to express ourselves. This is a lot about not appearing less masculine. When it appears that you still dress like you were in high school.

I fully believe you feel better about yourself and also convey a good message dressing well and appropriately for an occasion. Self esteem is definitely gained. Additionally the lady in my life is always dressed appropriately and gorgeous. I owe it to her (and myself) to also present myself in a stylish manner.

I used to be in a profession where the business suit was optional but, I still went for smart casual. I kept to that everywhere. I never liked the sports/leisure option. It looked too easy to slump into sloppiness. Still does IMO. The current problem is retailer's staid choices vs the women's options. For similar options in menswear you have to look further, often pricier and even that doesn't always work vs the women's options. I have some black denim jeans with black stitching, which don't immediately look like jeans, but the have and unusual pattern I call 'streaky dye'. I don't know how it's done, but it gives the fabric visual texture without use of any fake wear/distressing. The place I got them from currently has nothing similar, nether does any of the other jeans stockists, it's just bigger labels and prices, otherwise much of a muchness. I've often looked in the women's section just to find if a fabric, absent in the men's ranges, is still being manufactured!

At 59 yrs of age, I find it interesting that men in general don’t care what they look like. Many grown men dress like teenagers. Not to mention most men don’t care that they are out of shape. I had to realize that I can’t put my 59 yr old standard on, 20 something’s. Ms y are married with small children and jobs. I myself during that time, didn’t have the time or didn’t devote the time to physical fitness.

John, thanks for another great video! here is another perspective. when i go downtown for lunch, i wear my worst shoes, torn and shabby clothes, broken sunglasses, and a torn up hat. before going i don't shave for 4-5 days. that way, the panhandlers, riff raff, and thugs ignore me. besides that, worn out clothes just feel comfortable. plus i don't care if they get dirty or more ripped up. if women aren't attracted to me, so what? there is something to be said about not caring or making a good impression. it just feels great to let it all go and be totally relaxed in that moment. it's almost like being invisible. if you have the money and resources to look great all the time, power to you. if not, you can tack in the opposite direction and still have a fun time.

Great video as always and this one does speak to me quite a bit. I have been dressing in the most comfortable way during the pandemic and I've started to recently get back into fitness and I've been starting to put together my wardrobe a bit after purging a lot of old clothes. I may have to do a second purge, so that I have some space to actually get clothing that fits me at this time. I'm supposed to be going back to the office and my dress code is actually quite lax, but I want to present myself a little better when I get back to the office than I currently do at home.

In my very "personal" opinion, one of the biggest negatives of the "Covid experience" is that it seems like men don't care anymore from the NBA coaches to the workplace and church environments. It may seem minor to most people but it kind of "hurts" my heart. Again John, keep on being an advocate for us, "legendary" men that still have a "Passion For Fashion 😊🎉💯!
