I’m 57 and in excellent shape. I’ve worn leather jackets my entire life and will continue to do so. And, while I don’t scream look at me, I’m not trying to be demure either. Some interesting points though.

Have to agree to disagree with avoiding leather jackets. Nonsense.

I wear a trash bag and track pants and it works for me. I only dress up when going out to restaurants or movie etc.

I was OK with everything in this video up until the injunction forbidding (grain) leather jackets. The idea that they’re OK for guys in their 40’s but completely inappropriate regardless of style for me at 51 is preposterous. Some of us still ride motorcycles, by the way, and suede is as ridiculous as good grain leather is practical - especially here in the Pacific Northwest where it rains all the time. I think the most important style rule for any gentleman over 50 was left out of this video - “Know all the rules, but don’t be afraid to break one if it’s done on purpose with thoughtfulness and confidence.”

I wear whatever I want. I think some younger folks think older people who look stylish take attention away from them. It's as if they're screaming, you had your time let me have mine. To those who think this way I hope you will look as good in your clothes as I do when you turn 50 #

All I can say is - lol| I'm 54 and I wear whatever is comfortable whether it be t-shirts & shorts or whatever. Not going to let some self absorbed millennials tell me what I should or should not wear.

Ahm, the reason those new balance shoes are great is they come in all sizes and widths not to mention they are perfectly designed and are a quality shoe if you need any type of arch support -very important in my case. You’ll be 60 one day too ! Lol

I'm 67 and I wear grey New Balance 990's among others and wouldn't think of giving up my A2 jacket under any circumstance . I wear some T-shirts that have logos of items that interest me, etc. Bottom line is wear whatever you like. Young people obviously do.

I disagree with the leather jacket. Leather is fine as long as you have the right fit. Leather jackets are like a suit / sport coat you should have a professional help fit you with the right leather jacket. Buying off the rack for leather jackets is a toss up.

I knew a guy who walked round town with five dogs, did not dress well in fact scruffy, spent hours sitting on the town hall steps, not in the lest bit stylish but he had a great personality and great charisma, he drew people to him, girls loved him.

Being a bit harsh here perhaps, but do feel if you are going to give fashion advice you got to turn up with something a lot more fashionable than a standard boring blue checked shirt, and an ok but not particularly anything pink sweater.

Love your site and advice, but I also feel some leather items (other than suede) are cool looking on SOME older gents, such as flight jackets, and some of the more reserved classy pieces available from, say, Belstaff...then again, I’m no fashion pro lol Cheers!

Like a lot of commenters I have to disagree with your no leather jackets. I have an A 2 bomber jacket and is one of my favorites.I also have two cafe racer type jackets but don’t feel too comfortable wearing them.Another thing you don’t mention is you have to have the body for it.If you are old and overweight you won’t look good in them. I have been a lifelong fitness buff so I wear stuff that some guys my age would’t look good wearing. d

WOW. I stumbled across this video. NO leather jackets? WTF? I wear skinny jeans. they dont suffocate me but I get a ton of compliments in them. I love t shirts and I like wearing phrases on the t shirts and vibrant colors. Just because youre in your 50's and 60s doesnt mean you're dead. It seems that younger guys can wear whatever the hell they want. Often they look awful with distressed t shirts jeans and everything in between, and we are being told to look like tasteless watercress sandwiches. Why dont you just put us out back like an old horse and just shoot us? Suede rather than leather? What am I an English school teacher? I concur with most of what you suggested, except the leather jacket. You don’t have to be 25 to wear it. Keep it simple and well fitted. You’re never too old to look cool 😎. However never.. never look foolish.

All of this is complete rap. I have no time for fashion victims who dress to conform to others opinions. Dress in what you like, dress in what makes you feel comfortable. Don't worry about what other people think, it's only their opinion and if they're that shallow to think anything less of someone just because of how they are dressed then they're not worth knowing or speaking to.

The trick is to be comfortable in your own skin. IDC what people think of me...like me, love me or hate me. The 3 most important things in my life are to work an honest day, eat three meals a day and keep a roof over my head.

I like your style advice but the issue is: you adress a certain lifestile which many people have in their 50s: suburban, two wonderful children studying law or ingenerring, two cars, a "we care about what our neighbours think" attitude. Well: I lived in my early 30s in such an neighbourhood, worked in my 20s in a bank, and in them days I wore only a watch! Today in my 50s I wear slightly excessive jewlery and where I live (Malta) and work (Italy and France mainly) nobody cares about this and many do it anyway: I live on a mediterraniean island, my business partners are Italian, French, Spanish, Expat-Germans, some crazy NewYorkers live hiere, too. Even as a lawyer I did not follow the tie and perfect shirt rules: in criminal law a somehow more casualand slightly careless look helped me much more adressing clients in jail, state attorneys and judges and beeing overdressed with a perfect suit is only for big law firms dealing with big companies. With small and middle size businesses, average clients and even in the start up scene: looking too formal and too perfect builds up lots of barriers! That goes for any country. Rather than age also the people you are dealing with daily is important for how to dress. My business is still law related, but I also engage as an photographer, artist, organized concerts, acted in films, performed in jam sessions. Excessive jewlery is not the issue here, it can even be a door opener and even when I go to court I still keep some freedom to not look like a perfect tie and suit lawyer from a magazine or the website of a big law firm but like myself, and of course my mediterranean workplace has a lot of influence on how I dress there ;o) It's not all about age !!!

Not quite..I'm a couple of decades over 50, as I remember..Here at the OFH a stylish shirt has no collar, is either tie dye, Bob Marley, Jimi - Hendricks or Cliffe, Dylan, or Buffett. When the Kids visit, 2005 Disney World is acceptable. Formal shirtwear however, is Hawaiian. All footwear is flip flops. of course, swim trucks over the Depends. and CBD and box or NatiBo is cheaper than pot. Timothy Leary is dead! Make love not war! Right Arm! Farm Out! I'll never forget Woodstock!

I feel you should dress whatever way you feel most comfortable. Y.O.L.O (You Only Live Once). You're only here one time so wear what works for you, not by society's fashion ideals or ideas of what constitute as inappropriate or appropriate. As long as you're not offending anyone, wear what you wear. If society has an issue with how you dress, then tell society to either buy whatever they want to see you wear of to shut the hell up. Shirt logos of Ralph Lauren, Brooks Bros, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger and Tommy Bahama are probably fine, Tommy Bahama tee shirts, like all tee shirts are for boating, fishing, playing ball or the beach not for going out in public. Also on the makeover the only real improvement was full length pants and shoes. Nobody looks stylish or upscale in shorts and sandals or worn out sneakers.

I’m 68 and ride my Harley Road King with a motorcycle jacket. 70 is the new 50 so maybe you should rethink your old philosophy on how older gentlemen should dress. I wear what I think looks good and makes me feel good. I do not follow trends and have shoes,boots and coats and jackets for any occasion. I wear a Henley with jeans and boots one day, and next day I wear a T-shirt and leather vest. It’s all about feeling good and that makes me look good.

Fist off, I’m a subscriber and have generally enjoyed your series. However, I completely disagree with the ‘no leather jacket’ advice for men over 50. Leather jackets look fantastic and I get compliments on my brown classic leather jacket and yes, my black biker jacket too! Leather screams class not mid life crisis! Youthful arrogance you two!. One of my rare comments back. You make a statement you are against leather jackets and have built a fictional age barrier? Does a man looks automatically change past 50? Leather jackets have been a mens fashion staple for an extremely long period; over 100 plus years. They became a staple based on there ability to shield the wearer from cold and wind. Today they also are a fashion piece to many as well. May I humbly suggest you study Jeff Goldblum styling a leather jacket at well into his 60"s, as an example! Is he not classy, poised and confident? Further, perhaps rather than a blanket banning of a piece of menswear at a certain age, and issuing challenges you may want to suggest styles, colors, etc that may look good for that particular age group. By the way, leather jackets and mens pants still remain a staple for those 50 and older driving a motor cycle. In this instance they also serve to protect they wearer. My point in all this is: Style and function can co-exist; Men as well as womans clothing styles go from very formal to very casual. You should dress appropriate to what you are doing. I would like to see a future video on how you would style leather pieces and for what occasions rather than banning a staple pasted a certain age!

I'm 70 yrs. I dress for me. I got my style which I call biker rocker dude I really could give a flying fuck less who approves and who don't. I wear a lot of leather and jewelery Why because I paid my dues. Spent all my adult life being prim and proper. Let me also add the ladies in my life all compliment on the way I dress and my style. They are mostly in their mid thirties. What’s with their opinion on getting rid of leather jackets when one hits middle age? Really? I’m 57 and have been wearing my same biker jacket for 30 years....and no, it is not too small. I get compliments all the time on its bonafide aged distressed look and how good I look in it. I agree with most of these commentators view on looking your age, but leather jackets look good on most any guy at most any age.

I absolutely love my distressed jeans and I’m 51 and people think I’m in my early 40 s and I still look good in them.

I am in my sixties, wear a nice slim type looking leather jacket and always get compliments.

The theme is you can wear ugly and look odd and foolish when you're younger, but we'll forgive you. Bad choices are clothes that don't compliment the wearer or are ill-suited to time and place. Some of their points are no-no's at any age for women too.

I hate to tell you this but, several other websites, blogs, etc point out the number one thing for men 50 or over IS a dark leather jacket. Providing you have a decent haircut of course.

My co-worker (older man) 42 who was descent looking started dating a 21 yr old girl and would ask me and the other younger women for advice on style and clothing . One thing I noticed is most older men don't have is separation between casual and non casual clothing . What he would wear at work would be what he would wear to go out as well . Faded jeans with those white New balance shoes. Changing his wardrobe a bit made him look more attractive and gave him a little boost in confidence and than he started working out . If your over 50 it's ok to have style aint nothing wrong with that .

By the time you hit your mid fifties, you start experiencing joint pain and foot pain from a life of activity. Running shoes are often exactly what you need to be able to stay active. I work out at the gym daily and wear my gray NB running shoes on the treadmill and when biking and walking on the trail or just lifting weights and shopping as wearing classic sneakers what that means hurt my feet and add to my knee and hip pain. And they are gray because the only other color the shoe store sold was black. Also older men are far more fit than they were long ago. I wear shirts with logo to the gym daily -- shorts without logos for gym time seems kind of a fruitless concern. I thought this topic might offer some low hanging fruit so I stuck around for it but instead what I heard was judgmental and irrelevant ground rules for 50 something's from a pair of millennials.

Guys, I agree with everything except the leather jackets. I have a couple of A2 and G1 flight jackets I earned the hard way and still wear them at 67. I still get compliments especially when I'm wearing my aviator sunglasses with them.
