I just recently got sober almost 2 weeks now but the song I never really paid attention to it before I'm 70 years old my wife was murdered in 1980 I was a single parent most of my life and I haven't been able to cry , I've been holding on to my pain thank God he's rescuing me from myself I started acting just like the world the lyrics that says the saints have turned into sinners please show me the way. I met a woman at the VA in Portland Oregon a total stranger I saw her reading the Bible and I asked her would you read to me. I got a lot of work to do in my apartment it's so messy, but that's the least of my problems I forgot how good it feels to be real and honest and tell the truth . After I cry I feel so much better, I forgotten that God is so real change me. So I can love you and others better especially my children they're adults now and I live away from them now but I love them so much the song just talk to me in a way it should! Thank you God don't ever let me stop searching for you loving you, I hated words like obedience .now when you love somebody you listen to them. That's my prayer I am willing reading the word again❤
My son James Cotton is the little boy featured in this video, his father is Paul Cotton of Poco. James is now married and they are expecting twin girls in July. So very proud of him. Thank you to everyone who commented on this video. This was a very special day . Video directed by Michael Bay.
So underrated, it's a damn shame what Styx did to Dennis. They wouldn't have made those successful hits if it weren't for Dennis's writing.I don't think Dennis ever got enough respect or recognition.
@@Chicago_CabbieI'm sure there is cause there's always 3 sides to a story.Dennis's side, Styx's side and the truth.I'm just sharing what I only know from what Dennis was saying in interviews about the guys from Styx.
I lost my husband of 33 years not long ago and my faith has been shattered and then I feel it again. This is and has always been one of my favorite STYX songs. 🙏🙏
Same here but possibly for a different reasons. Our country has lost its values and we need good messages, good parents, and artists who aren't afraid of faith and morality.
Don't lose that faith that will show you the way. God finds a way if we let go and let God. Many years ago my mother gave me a plaque that says "God gives the best to those who leave the choice to Him." May God's blessings be yours!
Amen to that one. This is NOT a sing along tune because I am a singer and I can't get through it. That's ok. It's the kind of song you need when you just want to cry
I listened to this song for the first time tonight and I was mesmerized. A beautiful song that humbly begs to understand God and to feel His presence. A longing that only Deyoung's haunting voice can express. This must be the starting point for any spiritual awakening...
Hello 👋 Dave How're you doing, it's been a long journey, and I'm nothing without amazing fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness, All love to you and yours ❤️
I was so blessed that God of long suffering let me hit my bottom and stay there until i prayed for help 🙏 that was 41 years ago and still clean and sober. ❤
Nothing beats 70s 80s 90s music. Just done with such feeling and conviction and sang songs like it was the last song they would ever sing. So lucky to have witnessed the abundance of talent as a kid and teen and young adult during those 3 decades
I recall a guest pastor at my church who preached a sermon that was directed at music, and musicians. He specifically targeted Styx as having a tremendous negative impact on young people. That happened in 1995. I had no clue then, nor now in 2019 what band of musicians he had listen to. This particular song should be sung in church. It has always amazed me that music is a target, an easy one for those who may listen yet are so unwilling to hear. Show me the Way is a lyrical masterpiece and DeYoung's passionate voice delivers the message to perfection. Excellent song.
Your pastor view regarding Styx is clearly noted. He is probably basing his opinion the fact that creator Dennis DeYoung derived the name of the rock group from the river travelled to hell for wayward and unbelieving souls against Jesus Christ. I am a born again Christian and a true lover of Christ. To this very day I have no problem with the music of Styx. This is why God Himself forgives all sinners!
@@jackiegreen9960 You may have forgotten but Styx in (1980-81) During the " Paradise Theatre" era was accused of have Satanic messages, when the songs were played backwards, and I believe QUEEN was one of the bands also accused along with Styx among others, this was before CABLE T.V but I remember the news was all over this back then, in 1983 Mr.Robotos theme was about CENSORSHIP, but more people spend time hating Dennis Deyoung, for that song but its ironic look at BIG TECH and what they are doing now, back in the day, I brushed off the backwards messages narrative as FAKE NEWS, and even Michael Jackson was talked about negatively by preachers, ( BLACK PREACHERS) during Thriller but it wasn't about his music having backwards messages, a lot of it was out of nonsense. If you ever watch the CAUGHT IN THE ACT live concert with Styx (1983 Kilroy was here tour) You'll see J.Y right before they do the song " SNOW BLIND" He actually addresses the accusations of SATAN MESSAGES in their songs and he strongly slammed the accusations.
@@misterninetyseven2898 Dennis and Tommy are similar to 🍎 and 🍊. Together they gave Styx the unique and special sound from this supergroup. But since the ousting of Dennis, Shaw and JY's refusal to perform the songs that Dennis and them together wrote as if they would ultimately erase his history and existence if given a chance. I hope before it is too late that they mend their feelings, set aside their petty differences and throw one final farewell performance for die hard fans like me!
@@misterninetyseven2898 TS is a douchebag. DDY started the band in 1962. TS came to the band in 1976. In 1999 he and JY kicked him out. 5-22-20 DDY releases his new album and on the same day TS releases a Led Zeppelin cover! If that isn't a true dochebaggery then nothing is!
DDy wrote this as a personal spiritual experience when he questioned his own long held beliefs and faith were starting to fade. It's a very heartfelt song
My dad passed away yesterday and now I'm making a playlist with all the songs he loved and I remember him by. This is one of them. Thank you dad for showing me the greatest artists of all times. Loved, missed and never forgotten 🤘🔥❤
What a beautiful thing to do. Good luck with the project. Know that your Dad will be looking down on you the entire time and smiling. If you listen real hard he may just whisper a few songs you never knew about. ♥
Nearly 30 years ago, we were coming back from Desert Storm, and this was on the radio ... and it summed everything up for me. Dennis found Jesus, and I found hope. I listen to it again, now, hoping He will show Us the way, once again.
First off, wanna take the time out to personally dedicate this song to what I had to go through three years ago, including having to lose my Mother in death, and even to mention that I also lost my Older brother too two in half years later after losing our Mother. And I have to say that this song has really gotten me through some very tough times. So I thank God for showing me the way to live again. RIP: To both my dear sweet Mother and Older brother. Everything that I did I did it just for you guys. And may we see each other again in Heaven.
This is a 3 stage vid in my eyes. The innocence of childhood, learning what love looks like (newlyweds making love), and the effect of deep abiding love (the old man crying at his wife's grave). And then capped off by the appearance of the boys father, and the boys realization of deep love. Such an amazing song and video.
@@ladywillow2961 i am so very sorry. My deepest heartfelt condos to you and your family. If you would like to be Facebook friends please let me know. Praying. Much love Mario goodguy cioli on Facebook. Have a beautiful day!

About 20 years ago when we begin our Contemporary Service at our little Methodist Church here in Georgia, I was in that band as a vocalist, and one of the first songs we did was cover this exact song. Of course I am no Dennis DeYoung, but the crowd knew the song immediately related to the song and it was terrifically impactful in that service on that day. I selected the song to be worked up by the band, and told the preacher at the time he needs to preach on this topic using the song as a setup. It was extremely effective and some of them still talk about it to this day. Powerful song powerful video, thank you Dennis.
This song randomly popped into my head this morning as it was a song we sang in 7th grade choir. I never heard the original version until now but I can now understand why our Director chose it. Thank you, Styx, for this gem.
Read Enoch to learn the other 2/3 of the supressed scriptures. Be free in Jesus and know the forebearers knew He was coming to redeem the world from sin and restore His protoplast creation in us all.
The scene where the boy sees the old man laying flowers at the foot of a grave and begins to cry always chokes me up… this is such a great song with a very powerful message.
The fact that a rocker, Dennis De Young talks about God and the condition of tbe world shows he is a deep person and that the world continues to need his music and lyrics because he reminds us of the most important things in life.
The fact that they ask for direction from the Divine shows that they are deep intellectually and deep spiritually. Our faith compels us to seek God's direction.
@@KD-ou9bm I agree with that comment because it seems like when a group gets someone that has such an individualized distinctive voice it is super hard to hear that band without that voice fronting for them Styx and Dennis journey and Steve Boston and Brad. Van Halen and David.
My grandfather passed away in November of 1990 and this is the first song I heard after we laid him to rest. And I really started to bargain with God about My life and I needed guidance. Thank you guys for sharing the way
@@danielmackenzie8549 I heard him sing last night at The Gallo Center for Performing Arts in Modesto, CA and he was still as “tight” as when a young man.Outstanding.
I definitely agree it's hard to find good clean positive music now in these days everything has to be so vulgar so much profanity it's disgusting. Or if it isn't that it's all that hard rock heavy metal growling which really annoys me. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite songs from styx .
Styx was one of my favorite bands of the 80's. I always wanted Dennis to do a duet with Anne Wilson of Heart. In my opinion, she had the best female voice in rock. That duet would be EPIC!!
This song was the defining song for all of the military during Desert Shield / Desert Storm. Didn’t know what was about to happen and praying for the best.
STYX has always been one of my favorites. I saw them live in about 72 and somewhere I still have my ticket stubs. The whole band and especially Dennis and Tommy are always the ultimate vocal professionals. Dennis' new RU-vid channel proves he still has the chops to do a killer band reunioun and if that ever happens I will travel far to see it.
Beautiful song, beautifully sung and performed and beautifully portrayed. Thank you Dennis for writing this song and singing it only the way you could. It is one of my all time favorites and brings back may wonderful memories of a better time. Styx at their very best and untouchable.
25 years ago I was a part of a mime group and we would perform to this song. Right now is the very first time I've seen the video. God was a prominent part of my life then. Beautiful song🎉.
I just got told this song has zip to do with god and that it's about a failed relationship so my response was people look to God in situations like that for guidance
@@frankconnelly8880 No he is not coming back he did not rise from the dead either he was just any other human being he"s dead its all mythology grow up
Brought a tear to my eye when I saw John playing. He was such a good drummer and rarely mentioned when people talk about drummers, but listen to how he plays, He is one of the best to me. Wish there was more video of him.
You probably already know the song that Tommy wrote about John, "Dear John". If not, check it out ! It's a beautiful, bittersweet, spiritual song. Another song that shows Styx is a spiritual band. It's here on RU-vid.
This is the closest thing Rock music has to a gospel hymn. It's sad knowing that this is Styx' last top ten hit to date. "Every night, I say a prayer, in the hopes that there's a heaven...." To the citizens of Uvalde, Texas, We're with you, people!
This song is SO POWERFUL! I love it's beautiful message, and to me it's a prayer that is so needed now to keep our faith and hope😍🌈 strong❣🙏🏽😇LOVE TO ALL💖☮
I have not heard this song for a few decades. A whole different meaning now than then. My father was at my mother's grave until the day he lay beside her joining my younger brother. Many tears fell today.
"Every night I say a prayer in the hope that there's a heaven But every day I'm more confused as the saints turn into sinners All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay And I feel this empty place inside, so afraid that I've lost my faith Show me the way, show me the way Take me tonight to the river And wash my illusions away Please, show me the way And as I slowly drift to sleep, for a moment dreams are sacred I close my eyes and know there's peace in a world so filled with hatred Then I wake up each morning and turn on the news to find we've so far to go And I keep on hoping for a sign, so afraid I just won't know Show me the way, show me the way Bring me tonight to the mountain And take my confusion away And show me the way And if I see your light, should I believe Tell me how will I know Show me the way, show me the way Take me tonight to the river And wash my illusions away Show me the way, show me the way Give me the strength and the courage To believe that I'll get there someday And please show me the way Every night I say a prayer in the hopes that there's a heaven..." when the night is Darkest, look to the sky..
This is a beautiful song. My best friend told me about it. She said that you have to hear this song it is beautifully done. She was right. Sadly, she passed away 6 months later. I have it on my phone. Every time I play it, it brings tears in my eyes. RIP Emily. This songs for you.
April 19, 2024, Friday. Philippines. When our three sons and a daughter were young, my wife Macy and I showed them they way. Now, it's them who help us out and they show us the way.
Beautiful but haunting for me. My husband loved this song and played it quite a bit before taking his life 14 years ago. I always wanted to reach out to Styx to delve into its meaning.
I'm a little stunned because I never knew this was a Styx song until tonight when I was listening to some of their older work and decided to pull up their wikipedia page.
SO many heartfelt songs were put out in the 80s by Styx, Journey, Foreigner, Chicago....I could keep going but they all fell victim to band issues that stopped them from continuing their gift to the world of these types of songs. That's why there will NEVER be another era of songs like there were in the 80s.
@@frankderudder7290 Look up Castle Walls, Father OSA, Krakatoa/Hallelujah, Movement for the Common Man, Clair De Lune/Ballerina, This Old Man, Man of Miracles, Suite Madame Blue to name a few and tell me if a pop station will play these.
Sang this song apart of a choir back in 2012. Even to this day, this song still resonates with me. I find myself singing it when I'm feeling morally lost or confused. I'm not particularly a godly person presa, but I believe in strong morals. I believe in doing the right thing. And to whatever God that may be listening I need help finding which way to go. I had to resign from a job asking me to do things that felt wrong. I don't care about being the richest. I just want to do right by people and help them. So I pray that I'm shown the way. Thank you Styx this beautiful song will always stick with me for life.
My daughter Kelly was 2 y/o when she first heard this great song. In her baby language skill, she will sing it to me when every time I’ll get home from a U.S Navy weekend pass…she will add up words too: “Daddy, daddy show, showww me the wayyyyy” 😁🤣😂😭 I’ll never forget those happy moments we lived as a family; we travelled the world and lived in so many nice places too (not all of them were very nice to be honest though) but we all chipped in to make it work and that’s what really matters. This song will have a very special place in my heart & mind until my end of days. She’s now 33 and has her own family.
All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that I've lost my faith... I'm crying hard as I listen to this song again and again ..
