In the automotive industry, attention comes and goes in waves. One year, it’s one new SUV capturing headlines, and a different one does it the next.
The two family vehicles we’re looking at here have both been through that same cycle. Just a couple of years ago, the Subaru Ascent and Volkswagen Atlas were making serious waves as the first three-row SUVs ever produced by their respective brands.
Today, newer offerings tend to steal the spotlight, and these two don’t get as much attention as they used to. Does that mean they’re not worth consideration? Absolutely not. Each of these vehicles has its merits and drawbacks, and each has its buyers for whom it would be the right fit, possibly even over some of the newer and flashier choices.

People are more concerned with stupid tech than a reliable plain car

Testing these cars for what I assume is a Canadian audience and not mentioning Subaru’s excellent full time AWD that comes standard with the car is nuts! I can’t comment on other aspects of these cars, but Subaru’s AWD is amazing in winter driving conditions.

The Atlas AWD is stellar too, so I assume they didnt bother for that reason. This review was pretty poor. They didnt talk about tow rating or rear seat space/use or anything. Also highest trim vs middle trim, not really competition for each other.

@@hermannarminius7746 that’s right but, it’s not a standard feature like it is with all Subaru’s (except the BRZ)

Whoa, that's the review? You never did the interior (rear seat) layouts and sizing. The Atlas has it there big time. I also find it aggravating when they compare high trim vs a lower trim of a competitor. How can you can compare when they are doing apples to oranges. This was not a good review, please do better

The V6 Atlas seats lay completely flat and with more inches of space. That’s a must for many.

#1 Reason I bought the 2020 Ascent over the Atlas is auto-engine stop start. The 2020 Ascent doesnt have it, and the Atlas required you to manually turn the auto-engine stop/start off every time you start the vehicle.

so u bought the ascent because it didn't have the feature you want, lol

What kind of jogging stroller did you put in the Ascent? Thanks!

Funny is most of other reviews of the Atlas say that feels like a big golf, becasue how it handles for the size, but here is stated the opposite.

i own an Ascent. it is a good car in terms of comfort and practicality. BUT it is a catastrophy in terms of powertrain. You dont realize it on a 15min roadtrest. but after a while you do. (you dont control as you should with the throttle. it feels like the ecu is guessing what you want , while it doesnt actually read the throttle input , its just guessing) In my case i feel like smashing all the windows with a 10lbs hammer every time i drive it. fortunately not that often, as it is my wife's. worth noting: the ascent has an almost totally flat cargo if ordered with 2nd row bench not bucket seats.

2024 Atlas vs Ascent ...which one? Spend a lot time in the mountains in the winter!

My vote is the Subaru. Superior AWD, low slung boxer engine helps cornering performace, good saferty features, I’d trade up to one from my Crosstrek.

The Subaru Ascent was dropped from Consumer Reports recommended list recently due to many quality issues.

Did she say that the ascent was one take down from the top of the line premiere at second 39?????? Maybe she meant to say touring I am losing my mind.

In Canada the trim go: Premier > Limited > Touring > Convinence. God knows why having different names for Canada and US.

All this talk about the Atlas being a much heavier vehicle is nonsense. It is only 6kg heavier than the Ascent. That's a 12 pack of beers.
