I know alot of people will tell me im wrong for doing it but i used a basket like u said there was no room to drill out by using washers to grab in the vent holes to line up on a motor..Was a skar evl basket i put on a JL W7 motor i play it every day and have been for a year now with zero problems
I have G&S Redline 10" subs that need a recone kit. Yes I know they are old, not the depth of new recone kits. They did sound awesome, all I will have of them are good memories.
thanx sooo much for this video. Please explain how to measure or determine where coil should sit in gap when attatching to spider. If im building a sub from parts i dont want to realize after gluing that coil is too deep or too shallow. thanx for TECH STUFF-TUESDAYS. Tons of great information
I wanna use 1 inch tweeter with a 4 inch coil dual 1 ohm with an x max of 25mm and a fs of eleventy four hertz...should be a problem should there oh yeh and a shallow mount basket !!!
Very informative video EMF! There are alot of people out there that think they know everything just because they read this or that on the internet, and you do a very good job of explaining how things really are in the industry. The real deal. I'm waiting for you to do a tech stuff Tuesday about Rockville's recent videos on their K-9 subs. They sure caught alot of smack, especially the one where they blew a Sundown SA-12, and I have to admit, I was one of the many bashing them on it and even though I hate to do that, in a case like that it needs to be done because you have alot of youngsters out there trying to decide what subs to buy and unfortunately they believe alot of what they see or hear on the net whether it be true or not.
@@EMFAudio How do you know select how many layers to add for a spider? Or is it strictly based on trial and error? I'm going to attempt to build my first subwoofer for a hobby project so I very new to this. I've watched a ton of you videos and I really appreciate how honest and informative they are! If it helps at all (from what I've watched it probably doesn't but figured it can't hurt to mention.) I'm using a soundstream tarantula t5-152 motor and frame for the build. I would be very thankful for any advice on spider selection and cone selection. I already have a coil picked out and I didn't have very many options since the gap is only 5mm wide. Also I didn't know how to tag you without replying to one of your comments that why I put this here. Thank you so much for you time! I hope your business thrives and you keep making exceptional videos!!
Super cool video do you think that maybe one day you can make a video on voice coil adjustments another words knowing how to figure out the proper height on setting a voice coil if you do not happen to have the original one
I want rebuild a sub where there is no recone. Might want to use a better different possible how do you choose a a winding height according to your motor depth and top plate?
The 15's are a lot more fun. In stock and cheaper. Lol. They require just a bit more space though. My 12 was in 1.7 cubes. My 15 is in 5. When he did the pallet sale last year I couldn't pass it up.
I have an 8" still to fix...this sub is 30 years old so i dont know if i could fix... BUUUUUUUUTTT!!! the coil is fine just need, cone, surround and spider
Would you err on the side of closer to the top plate or closer to the center pole when trying to locate a replacement coil for a random subwoofer? For example, if you had a center pole that was 2.5 diameter, top plate the was a 3" diameter hole, but the voice coils available were either going to be tighter towards ID or OD with nothing in the middle....which would you choose?
From a performance standpoint there shouldn't be a variance, from a reliability standpoint closer to the pole would prevent the coil rubbing and shorting.
If you used too thick it wouldn't move at all. Thicker doesn't necessarily mean stiffer either. I'm assuming you're meaning too stiff of surround and too stiff of spiders in which case it will move less by comparison, so it wouldn't smack the back plate, if that was possible to start with.
If someone were to make a let's say universal adjustable basket. Then you could mix and match a bit more. As long as voice coil diameter matches magnet. Am I correct?
That couldn't be a thing, but from a design standpoint you still have limitations in the same nominal coil size with fitment and just because something physically fits doesn't mean it's a good match for performance.
Quick question.. do they make a recone kit for alpine e series 12 inch woofer? Can it be converted from single voice coils to dual 2 ohms? A lot of my friends been asking... alpine doesnt have them ...
It could be made, but why? Those things are like $80 new, it would cost more to ship it back and forth than it would to buy a new one. They're throw away subs, that's why Alpine doesn't have them.
I love the sound of them.. they stood up to a lot of punishment... they not blown just the surround is saggy. Thought their might be something i could do to refresh them..
So how much clearance should there be between the inside diameter of the coil and the outside diameter of the pole piece, and same question as to outside of coil and inside of top plate? If the coil fits without scraping is it fine? Or is there a certain gap you should be aiming for? Just wondering because I have done a couple throw together recones with cheap soft parts, and although both have turned out basically how I was hoping, I wasn't 100% sure, so just ordered something that I knew would at least fit without scraping. I enjoy the building part a lot, just not real sure on some of the parts, whether or not I could have went with something that fit better. And this video has shown a couple of the things I had questions about. So thanks for that. I have a couple motors laying around that I am thinking of building some cheap 8's out of, just so I can do it again.
There isn't a standard for those gaps, but there are design philosophies and considerations. If a motor is too strong for the application you'd have a smaller coil with a larger gap, if you need all the motor force it has to offer you'd have tighter gaps. But, with tight gaps you can still rub from slight rocking and the more Xmax it has the more prone it is to rocking. A heavier coil is also more prone to rocking. I could go on and on about when to do what and why but the short answer is there isn't a set goal.
I have two crossfire xt2 12s frame and their 12 spoke baskets. And I was wanting to put the biggest surround and cone set up. What size you think I should go with? They have dual 1 inch slugs with 4 inches from top to bottom plate. Motor spacing is optional if need.
I go with the biggest needed, not the biggest that fits. Having excessive surround is BAD for performance if it's not necessary, like being limited by the coil or spiders. First you need to know the limits of your coil and spider.
@@EMFAudio the spiders are progressive roll 4 layer nomex red spider pack. The new coil winding width is the same as the stock one 2.4 But the former height 5.5 and is a inch longer than the stock. That's why I would need the inch motor spacers. And for the cone it has a huge roll surround with a .4 height difference between both cones stock one being 2 inches deep. Ik i will not reach the max excursion do to the motor limits. I just want to use what I got and make a better than the factory.
EMF Audio Do you have any idea or options for the old Kicker Solo-X subs? I have 5 of them and am down to the last 2 cones... I have 3 sitting lifeless. Excellent condition otherthan shit cones and none available anymore..
@@EMFAudio Thats what I figured.. I do have several 12"s sitting around if you wanted to play with them and cannot get ahold of any. Bounce any ideas off of me and Ill do the same. They were mean subs, very little to complain about for as old as they are now
@@MagicAlaskan If you aren't local to us, cost would be a big factor with shipping back and forth. It's all what you consider the end value to be worth.
Okay so I do understand that all soft parts are not universal and also that each motor has it's limitations but my question is what would be the differences of an upgraded subwoofer for example I bought a set of sundown x12v2's that were upgraded by Dave Leib designs and unfortunately I do not know a whole lot about them but he added like half an inch spacers between the motor and the basket or shortening ring so I assume he used a taller coil?!? Either way I have not owned a standard pair of the x12's but man do these upgraded ones really get down, I have two Skar Skv13500.1's strapped on them at 1ohm each amp for a 2ohm final and the subs are dual 2's wired up to 4 then back down to a 2ohm final.... Oddly they do not do well with higher freq's but mannn do they seriously hammer the lows!
If you shoot me your email address I do have pictures of the coils/spiders he used and the spacers, maybe you could help me identify exactly what I have here?
There should be a spacer in there anyway. It probably has an NSv2 coil in it, which is longer but also uses a larger gauge wire on the windings. The whole doesn't do higher notes but does play lows thing is basically how X's sound.
That is a very lengthy answer to not be incredibly vague. From a consumer standpoint, you should ask the question of why you WOULD use a 5" coil. How much power are you trying to put into a sub?
@@EMFAudio imo that would be a good video just for the information about subs... I know of a few brands that use 5" coils and I am curious about the difference and reasoning
@@EMFAudio I've watched all of them and I understand that part. Just curious how to measure for the physical length of the coil. For example when replacing a motor with a taller motor wouldn't you want a taller coil with the assumption everything else will work together to give more excursion?
@@chickenpimp5190 The coil length will depend on the motor depth, top plate height, spider limits, and surround limits. The biggest thing is making sure it won't smack the back plate,
Thanks for the info. Just doing research. I'd like to try building a couple of subs this summer. Not because I think I can do it better, because if they turn out good I can say I built them lol.
Hey EMF is there a recone kit for the soundstream t4 12 with the dual 1 ohm voice coils? I just picked one up, pretty sure its blown so been looking for a recone kit and cant find one. Any ideas?
Rigidity is a factor, but a deeper cone is also needed for high excursion so the spider doesn't hit the cone, unless you just have a giant gap between the spider and cone which may result in other issues.
That depends how hard it hits. Tapping lightly a few times may just dent the former. A hard smack and deform the former and lock it up, or shift the coil.
@@EMFAudio I've been looking for two years lol. I have them silconed up for the mean time. Incriminator wants like 400 bucks for a set of drop ins. Subs work great but look like poo.
@@EMFAudio dont laugh kinda new i thought the quad stack audiopipe ment loud subwoofer so i jumped on it what to look for that make a woofer loud and deep bass
To be honest, buying something used is the best bet. Why would you want something not fit for production, at a higher cost? You can pick up some good motors used pretty cheap if you're just wanting to build something.
That cone has a 3” voice coil ID cone why not cut it out to match the 4” voice coil then there should be enough room for cone and spider to lay flat on each other
You could, but that won't gaurentee a proper fit. Also, note I said to ignore the coil size difference, the visuals were for the point not that specific build.
We aren't so juvenile we have to rig testing blowing up other brands to try to make our shortcomings look better. We educate, and there will be a lot of educating happening Tuesday.
@@EMFAudio sweet i like to learn and you guys explain quite a bit, im sure im not the only one who will enjoy a series of educational will it blow, im looking forward to it thank you:-)
Sub with a 3" coil original coil ID is 76.2mm. What is the difference in using coils with a different ID? Instead of 76.2mm could a coil that is 76.66mm or 76.45mm still be used and perform the same? Also OD isn't an issue with any of those. Can anyone help? Don't want to order the wrong coil. Thanks
