Nice trick using wire to set the seedling as you want it in the pot then fill the container. I started just a couple days ago a flat of cherry plum seeds for spring seedlings and will for sure use your wire trick, also from the PNW Southern Oregon climate.

Thanks for watching! This technique works pretty well for seedlings and cuttings. Just need to watch out for biting into bark during the growing season!

Nice! Success! 🍁 My 4-5 month update: My only AcerP cuttings that has new growth so far is KiyoHime. ... most cuttings/stems are also still green w buds. Akaji Nishiki... seems like they’re all dead now. Shojo no Mai... a few stems still green, and buds, but no new growth yet. A few roots out the drain holes though. Katsura... same, a few stems are still green, but unopened buds. ShinDeShoujo... barely hanging on and starting to die out. A bunch of my tropicals rooted heavily though and I already removed them from greenhouse to acclimate and repotted them... Seiju elm, pomegranate, firepower nandina and pyracantha. All these had mad roots coming out the drain holes, after only 2.5-3 months. Also trying cotoneaster recently (only 6 weeks in so far though). Hoping this one roots easy and vigorously too (idk yet). Acer P cuttings are def the slowest to root, sprout and grow. Most difficult to keep alive or get going. Success % rate seems so low, that I may just give up on acer cuttings and just stick with more-reliable air-layers... since only a few cuttings make it anyways. One usually does only a few layers at a time.... but at least layers have a much much higher success rate and you also end up with much bigger plants too.

Thanks for watching the video and for your updates. I agree air layer is a much better propagation method for JMs. If those cuttings are still alive but not producing new growth yet, if you practice patience and keep them alive for a year or so, you have better chance getting some roots. It's like owning ETF stocks :)

Momiji-En Bonsai & Garden ...Yeah, patience is key, I agree. Brent from Evergreen tells me to not re-pot until next spring (if started in May or June) - more roots and roots are hardened off and tougher. He also says JM cuttings are slow and take 1 year to start to become really vigorous.

Great to see you had some succes with cuttings, I tried it last year in summer but the whole batch died. I did a new batch 2 weeks ago (mid may) and I hope a few will root this year... Thanks for the video. I had more luck with air layering, especially with my most viciously growing maple. My slower growing maples don't seem to air layer as well.

It's tricky and very difficult to propagate from cuttings. So far cuttings with tight internodes and small leaves seem to do well. Yes air layering is much easier. Shishigashira is slow growing but easy to layerbfrom my experience.

@@MomijiEn thanks for the reply, yes in a way with air-layering you can get a larger tree very fast, which I like a lot, but on the other hand I find it very hard to 'throw away' all those nice cut off branches after trimming the trees! So it would be great to get some new trees out of these cuttings :)... Fingers crossed.... Have a nice day!

@@Steven3D8888 haha same here, always having a tough time tossing them away. My cuttings from Katagata (very small tight leaves) are doing good so far. Please keepe posted on how yours are going!

Amazing!! Thanks for sharing. I have a couple questions: (1) Do you dip your cuttings in rooting hormones; and (2) Do you sanitize your shears when making the cuttings? I’m currently attempting to propagate coral bark JM cuttings!

Open air based on where I live (Northwest USA) as it's not too dry and hot up here. It may be helpful if you live in CA etc.

Using soft to semi hardwood cuttings work best for me! If it's too soft, I would not root from my experience.

Thanks! I don't use liquid fertilizer much. I mostly utilize organic and non-organic granular fertilizers.

Thank you! I'm located in the PNW in US. I usually keep all of my JM bonsai trees under partial shade. I only keep newly repotted trees under shade for a week (more or less) then move them under partial shade. Hope this helps!

Quick update on my first japanese maple cuttings: 2/2 of deshojo and 2/7of shishigashira have rooted but there isn't new growth and 1 of the deshojo have no leaves left, should i be worried about that?

I would say that's a huge success! As long as buds are alive, It will come back strong next spring!

It depends but usually I would leave them alone at least for 2 months. At that point, if they are still alive and healthy, you have better chance that some roots may have been generated.
