It's like he didn't know that Greg had it in him and now he realizes that Greg may actually become successful in business (and life) after all lol. Thus, the pride.
He's surprised and pleased for Greg, and at the same time the sheer *intensity* of the reaction, the veins standing out on Macfadyen's temples, the bulging eyes - they speak to a snarling outrage and panic that exists right beside the pride. Braun's reading of 'I'll never tell!' is at once coquettish and complete deer-in-headlights horrified terror. It's pretty good. These guys were something to savour.

Also, when Greg sided with Kendall after Kendall threw Logan under the bus by keeping some documents and also when he's snitching about Mattson to the siblings, Tom is proud of him because he knows Greg has his own way
@@juliacamposfrasao1048 If anything, Sarah Snook (the actor who played Shiv in the series) said that she doesn't know if she has ever met someone who is so different from their character as Matthew is to Tom. She said that Matthew was able to create a very calloused character, which makes him a great actor since, in real life, he's a big softie. Matthew also said that playing his character in Succession is both challenging and cringy. That makes me think he's closer to Darcy than he is to Tom.
Tom what an actor, in that few seconds he showed that he was proud of his prodigy, he was afraid, was trying laugh the tension off, and yet thinking on his feet to not let greg get away from him. Top notch stuff from director writer actors

The writers do a good job of crafting an innocent greenhorn who we as audience fear for, but then slowly watch him evolve into a a cunning debutant who still emotes a goofy innocence but now carries some degree of mischief and criminal enterprise in his back pocket.
I never believed that Greg was innocent. He was green and inexperienced, it was his mother that was guiding him to the dark side. Logan told him to take care of Kendall, not to buy cocaine for him in the park. Still, he went from living in an $80 a night hostel to living rent-free in one of Kendall's cribs.
Greg is basically the writers' avatar in this show. He's the character who behaves like they would if they were suddenly thrust into a world like this.

If you want to argue that Greg is the latter to the exclusion of the former you're welcome to do so, but you'd have to explain why he can't be seen as both. And so far you've just asserted it. You also seem extremely impressed with your own knowledge of the concept of an audience surrogate, which is an idea I'm pretty sure I learned about as soon as I started reading.

The idea that Greg is a stand in for the audience isn't a fact. It's not something where one person can be wrong and another right. We're talking about parsing a work of art here, not measuring the distance from the moon to earth. You really need to understand that not everyone thinks in such a programmatic way as yourself.

So what? My point was that he's a stand-in for the writers, and how they would behave if these polite English scriptwriters were thrust into the world of high finance. How is that 'wrong'? How can a subjective interpretation of a work of fiction even _be_ wrong? And it doesn't seem to have occurred to you that the reason I didn't mention the fact that he can also be seen as a surrogate for the audience is because it's trivially obvious and not particularly interesting to me. I try not to post stuff that's self-evident. Finally, no, I don't think I was aggressive. Never forget that Tom’s first instinct on this whole thing was to have a press conference and get ahead of the issue (which was promptly struck down by Gerrie and the rest of the Roys). Tom is trying so hard to play ball the way the rest play but you can see how much it hurts him every time he tries.
I think this was the scene that made Tom my favorite character. That, and when he admits to Shiv that he's not a hippie and isn't into the open marriage lifestyle. I thought that was so genuine and relatable.

I think we need to praise Nicholas acting here, he manages so well the wolf in a sheep’s clothing. The way he says “I don’t want this to sound horrible” and the face he has, he still tries to seem friendly and approachable while blackmailing his friend
its not always depicted in popular culture, but often times, those who rise to high positions in a company are well liked, honest and fair. greg is a nice kid. being likable can go a very long way.
