"When he swings, I'm ready." Well that's obviously not a sucker punch then. If you're ready for it and trying to counter it, then it's not a sucker punch. It's just a regular punch.
@neettim
@neettim 8 лет назад
Although I agree with you, I think he's talking about the sucker punch that happens when 2 people are in an argument face to face and things are getting heated. Like that 1st punch the person throws without stating he wants to fight. I guess as the defender, when someone steps up to your face like that, you just gotta get in that ready position
@GonzoTehGreat
@GonzoTehGreat 7 лет назад
Torgo The defence against a sucker punch is don't be a sucker! In this case it means: (1) Don't let them get within striking range by keeping your distance (2) Keep your eyes on them at all times and watch for intentions so you're less likely to be surprised (3) Keep your hands up so you can block in time when necessary The rest of the defence is a way to counter a haymaker.

I completely disagree. A sucker punch is any punch thrown that doens't come from a 'fighting ready position'.

Any time somebody starts a fight or an assault by sneaking you or trying to sneak you with a punch it's a sucker punch.
@loahnuh
@loahnuh 8 лет назад
Small criticism, don't start from a hands clasped position in front of you, get your hands up like you're surrendering. It presents a more submissive posture, which may help defuse the situation which is what you really want to happen, and it puts your hands in a better defensive position buying you a fraction second you don't have.
@neettim
@neettim 8 лет назад
good point man! thanks for that tip! really helpful
@mortvald

+loahnuh a little tip the more submission you display the more people will want to fuck with you. Nothing wrong with showing a little aggression if it doesn't defuse the fight at least you're preventing future fights.
@loahnuh
@loahnuh 8 лет назад
+Sousuke Aizen I don't know anything about you, and we can only speak from our own experiences and training, but acting aggressively in a situation like this nearly guarantees that you are going to get into a fight. Matching aggression with aggression almost always escalates a situation. So what if the guy continues to mess with you, if he's such an insecure prick that he's bullying you then leave or find someone like a bouncer or bartender who are legally empowered to make the guy leave. First rule of self-defense I've learned, don't get into a fight, no one wins when you do, you'll probably either get hurt, end up in the back of a police cruiser, or both. If that sounds weird to anybody reading this remember, I'm talking about self-defense, that is defending yourself, which is rarely achieved by acting as a macho superhero.
@mortvald
@mortvald 8 лет назад
loahnuh Believe me, i live in a war zone i know exactly what i'm saying the best way to never get into fight is to be humble yet make it clear that people should not mess with you. Acting cocky will give birth to hatred and jealousy and yes they will try to bring you down, however acting submissive will 100% make you a target practice of anyone who want to *feel strong*. Here is what i mean by showing a little aggression: let's assume somebody is here trash talking me, i won't speak i won't insult i won't respond but the moment he comes to my arms reach i will clobber him and leave.

We must have different definitions of sucker punch, cause they don't often come from the front, in your work space, with someone who is obviously a unknown/possible threat. That said, closing the gap, taking away his 'weapons', all good. Need more BJJ in my life.

My criticism of this video is 1.) this wasn't truly a sucker punch. A real sucker punch would blindside him, anybody with any boxing skills would make this guy see stars! 2.) the attacker ceases to resist as soon as he makes contact, there's plenty of ruthless things that can be done that would make this technique ineffective, but cause the defender a lot of injury. Ruthless intent trumps Technique every time.

great video! i think the fact that this gentleman mentioned a defensive posture pay attention to your space keep your hands up all these things prevent someone from trying to hurt you the technique used after that could be applied in several different ways but those are the keys to avoid being sucker-punched or attacked by an ambush

You should check out Rory Miller's take on this stuff. The fact is, even if you're a trained martial artist, you can get sucker punched. You think you should be ready for it, but you won't always be ready. There is no "answer" to a sucker a punch that catches you off-guard besides riding the punch. If you have a response for it, that means it's not a sucker punch.

Sucker punches are from when you are not expecting it. You're expecting it if he's in your face and you feel threatened. The best way to avoid a sucker punch is situational awareness.

I understand that Jiu Jitsu is mainly about taking someone to the ground, and then finishing them once it goes to the ground. But you don't have to take a man or woman to the ground in order to end a fight. And I can use the scenario in this video to prove my point. For the demonstrator could have went straight forward like he did, but then clinch for the purpose of striking with knees, elbows, and fists until he took him out.

What if the response to your arm control is a head butt? What if he pulls back and kicks? What if he isn't alone? What if he doesn't give up the second you touch him? Have you ever worked as a bouncer in a tough bar? Remember, the response is always slower than the attack.

Thanks for the demonstration. Guard your center line by just hitting him in the neck, done. You don't know if he has a knife in his left hand, next thing you know, your getting stabbed in your back. That take down waists too much time and occupies your attention on one person for far to long. That throw wont work on everyone, but hitting someone n the throat who takes a wide telegraphed swings can end it more efficiently and allow you to recover and reassess for other attackers.

@hunterpowers317
@hunterpowers317 7 лет назад
this is legit, but the best (and only) way to defend against a sucker punch is to just not be in someones immediate space or allow someone else to be in your immediate space if the situation is at all confrontational. its simple enough to step backwards, put your arms out, and say "whoa easy there, why dont we keep some respectful distance" if they want to keep moving forward then you escalate your words and tone to "do NOT get into my space/dont come into swinging distance!" if they keep moving forward then interpret it as an act of aggression and respond however you know how to respond. it is totally possible to control your own space for 99% of social interactions and that is the only really effective way to prevent a sucker punch. there is as much of an art to sucker punching people as there is to defending the sp, and a good sucker puncher is only going to swing when they have a real chance of landing.

Michael Sweet I worked security at a bar for over a year. you can tell when somebody is about to sucker punch you. I always talked with my hands (to keep them up in front) when I wasn't sure of said person's intentions. it's being mentally ready to block a punch, is the most important thing.
@michaelsweet139
@michaelsweet139 8 лет назад
Jesse Roberts that is tru, but as security you've probably been trained to keep your hand in front when dealing with a questionable person..? But generally speaking the sucker who gets punched doesn't have a chance of anticipating get'n hit or have any idea when its gonna happen! Thats why its called a sukr punch... The person throwing the punch is not the sucker, the unaware person is always bro!

Nice - just remember that if they back slap there hard on a hard concrete floor you can break their skull and/or knock them unconscious and/or kill them. I have a question, in the middle of doing this series of moves what if the opponent starts countering you in any manner he can, just off the top of my head smashing his foot against yours or maybe headbutting or punching/grabbing with the other arm anything to interrupt your defence or completing your counter. This is coming from someone who doesn't have any fighting experience so I am just curious whenever I see a series of moves play out in a video and the 2nd guy isn't reacting, or maybe this was just slowed down so I can view it.

I think preemptive striking is a better option in my opinion. In order to do this you have to let the person try and punch you a very short distance. I see this move being very useful in grappling just not this in my opinion. Either way I enjoyed the video thanks for the tip. Take or leave my opinion everyone has a preference and I'm no expert.
@neettim
@neettim 8 лет назад
what's preemptive striking mean?
@Seanx-ps1cx
@Seanx-ps1cx 8 лет назад
neettim basically hitting people before they hit you. Like a power slap for example. It's Important to keep hands open and not in a fist so it looks like self defense. If you can give several warnings beforehand you shouldn't have any legal trouble. With that being said it is very situational, as is everything. The concept behind it is don't wait for someone to hit you before you fight back.This puts you at an extreme disadvantage.
@neettim

@Cab0408
@Cab0408 8 лет назад
Sean 556x45 I agree with the concept of the preemptive strike, but it applies better when you actually know someone is going to attack. A sucker punch is different. You don't know when or where it's going to happen.
@SakiSkai

Nice technique, I love your art and i want to study it in the future for combat, but personally i wouldn't use this particular technique on the street. I believe it is possible to get hit in the back of your head (the spinal cord) while doing all that movement. Of course, the opponent must know what he's doing, but still i believe there is a small safety gap. Kick to the nut, fingers on the throat - eyes will do the job in half second. I hope you appreciate some constructive feedback. Keep fighting!!
@thelister4910
@thelister4910 8 лет назад
Only problem is I guarantee you've never trained what you're saying. You can't know if something you've never trained is effective. Poking the eyes should be effective, but what if the guy then tackles you to the ground? Groin shots are often NOT effective. Especially if the guy is drunk or high. It's pretty annoying seeing someone like you on all of these videos, going on about kung fu and poking the eyes. Strikes to soft targets are a great start, but they are not a replacement for actual sparring and training with full resistance.
@Cab0408
@Cab0408 8 лет назад
thelister4910 I have no BJJ training. In similar situations, having seen the punch coming, I've ducked, stepped to an angle and countered with a flurry of punches to the body, jaw, anything I could. Real fighting isn't highly technical. Too many variables. Even if one or both are trained, it turns to a brawl. As others have said, a true sucker punch won't be seen. The best defense is to maintain your reactionary gap.
@thelister4910
@thelister4910 8 лет назад
Michael C. What you just said about ducking the punch cutting the angle and countering with your own punches is a great option. One on one street fights turn into brawls if the skill level of the opponents is similar. If one has good technique and the other has none, it looks much more technical.
@SakiSkai
@SakiSkai 8 лет назад
Exactly my point Michael, if you train to hit the nuts,windpipe and eyes from day one, you don't even need to think about it. Hit once, fight is over. You wanna tell me lister that if i hit you on all these pressure points you are gonna keep fighting? Sigh, this isn't mma or ufc, we are talking about street fight. You are not fucking superman. The strongest man in the world can't take these hits, yet alone an experienced fighter
@thelister4910
@thelister4910 8 лет назад
-SakiSkai- Yes buddy, they can. I've seen it that's my point. And the thing is you aren't even training hitting those targets. You are kicking cups, goggles etc if you are trying to train it at all. This is the equivalent of training for a knockout punch by hitting the heavy bag every day, and never sparring and never once hitting someone in the face. You will never know if your strike will be effective, because you have never once spear handed someone in the eyes let alone lots of people to see it work consistency. I've seen guys on the street take extremely hard shots to the groin, I've seen them punched in the throat and they WILL keep coming. The only time someone tried to eye jab someone in front of me he got one eye, which threw the guy into a rage so he tackled the guy to the ground and started beating the shit out of him. Soft target strikes are a good tool to use but the fact that you think only superman can withstand them and that the "strongest guys" will immediately crumble to them shows how little you train and how you really aren't prepared for an actual fight.
@baldieman64
@baldieman64 6 лет назад
There's no guarantee of landing the headbutt, just as there's no guarantee of landing the sucker punch - so committing to the tie up is suspect. You are going to get a finger in the eye and have your head ripped off. You are going to end up in a tangled mess on the ground where his mate can kick or stab you.

He could easily pull you by the hair at 1:15 and non of your "off-balancing your opponent" shit will work. Worse, he might pull out a knife and that's the end of you. Tie-ups and clinches don't work in self-defense. Just because he isn't in a position to strike doesn't mean you have the advantage.

nnnope! never use brute strength. A guy 6'4 225lb would have just mopped you up. throws like that are very unsuccessful. You make yourself aware of his skeletal alignment. let him strike. SEALS always give something. You want something? you give something. let him have the grab. or reposition your alignment from his strike

What about dealing with a head butt? This technique definitely wouldn't work in that case.

anny takedown like that will result in an elbow to the back of the head or spine that's one reason bjj is not a selfdefens matial art

Any shitty kung fu elbow attack like that will result in a standing triangle choke. That's one of the of reasons no one takes kung fu seriously, yet everyone in MMA uses bjj...

so your superb art of striking will allow you to break a seasoned grapplers clinch... go to a gym any mma/bjj gym and actually practice against people with real pressure GL. The difference from bjj and your art they spar at 100% 3-5 times a week.

that is great, thanks, but it would be helpful to see what kind of counter measure would commonly be employed by someone who knows this technique, is the agressor and still wants to win the encounter. For example he can knee you in the balls?

The semantics here are not the point...if you are totally blindsided there obviously is no defense unless you have super powers...haven't caught the RU-vid video explaining how to obtain those yet. It's about being aware and effective.

I don't think you understand a sucker punch. Try this again with him trying to punch you from behind, whilst your attention is diverted elsewhere.
@randytipton4939
@randytipton4939 8 лет назад
That works....until your attacker locks his hands together before the throw. If you successfully throw him, he is going to drag you right down with him with your head pinned to his chest. Just my opinion.

Not Telling ...While I have little experience with BJJ, I'm a black belt in TKD and Kempo. I have been thrown this way, and performed this throw more times than I can count. Not saying it doesn't work, just saying it can be easily countered. As for having surprise on your side, I wouldn't count on it. Also, if you go to the ground with the attacker, expect his buddies to be there to kick the crap out of you while your maneuvering for position. There are better alternatives....

I saw this one coming. It is a well executed demo of a typical BJJ technique. i.e. it is garbage. "Street effective" only if you are lucky. As BJJ goes it is actually one of the more practical moves... that is how much BJJ sucks for the street. Firstly it assumes you can really reliably control ["weather the storm"] a much bigger and/or stronger person [you know, the kind who like to bully smaller people, and psychotics] with that clinch. For a woman outweighed by 100lbs she better be reeeeal good or lucky to get the throw instead of being crushed. There's good reasons why the Japanese JJ technique that the Gracies stole [yes, STOLE] this from use a simultaneous jam and strike then immediately throw, with the right arm defending against his left, rather than clinching and grinding with the head. What did millions of samurai know that the Gracies appear not to? Secondly, is this a realistic attacker? Hint: look at his left arm before the throw. Do falling primates grab? Thirdly, grappling invites being grappled. The attacker only has to fall over while clinching tight to pull you down too. But I guess being pulled by the face onto the ground is OK because BJJ on the ground rules, right? Facepalm. Or rather face shred. Doug Marciada only wants to do BJJ ["if he had the time"] because it is a fun martial art [if you like that sort of thing], not because it would help him defend himself or others, so you can forget bringing that up.

It's a simple form of koshi nage, which is by no means a bad technique in of it self. You naturally have to adapt your approach to the situation: a small person would not want to do this against a large person, which brings me to my biggest gripe with this demonstration: there's no kuzushi. First time he does the throw, the tori has a straight back, his balance has not been broken, which would make the throw nigh impossible to do on a resisting opponent. The second time he uses a headbutt as a form of atemi, which could work as a form of distraction and kuzushi as the upper body would most likely go backwards. This being said, it's a really big movement, and can be countered by tori lowering his weight. Since the left hand is not controlled either it invites the possibility of being dragged down, and possibly with your head into the ground, as you also describe. I could also possibly see a counter during the step in of the uke for the throw. I know I've done similar counters during training when my partner has tried to go for a throw with a big movement. If it was me, and we're talking within the what-if scope here, assuming that I'd be given the oppurtunity to do this, and especially if I had to face someone taller and heavier than me, I'd lock tori's right arm as he swings, strike up against the chin with my right for kuzushi, grab tori's left lapel with my right and push his shoulder back slightly to prevent any follow-up punch and also prevent a grab, *then* do the step in and throw. That being said, it would just be simpler to do an osoto gake at that point since toris balance would be backwards anyway.

Kodain Kiwrath Finally, somebody who has not downed the KoolAid. Thank you. Yes, to not get kuzushi is a total failure for a supposed jujitsu. They do teach breaking structure in BJJ so I guess the demo was not that good anyway. Better yet than your lapel grab (which doesn't really do any disruption in itself and is a grab (arrggh! see my point that grappling invites being moved by and stuck to the enemy)) why not hit the side of the neck and then slip straight into the throw, bicep-slamming/hooking his neck? or bypass that and go straight for the hook, rabbit punching him and then hooking? Right arm and shoulder clears and covers from his left all the way. And needless to say you don't have to be so nice as to knee drop on him... if multiples with weapons threaten then spiking him on his head can kill. I prefer to flow with his punch to do a throw, which would be real aikijujitsu [don't any of the MMA BJJ BBs ever train that, considering how often big bombs are thrown in the UFC?], or just blasting with palms, headbutts, shoulders etc. and "shredding" [clawing around/in the eyes] and cranking his neck with forward drive with maybe a knee or ko/o/soto/uchigaki/gari [trips!]. THAT works for any undersized but trained person, little strength required.
